Wisconsin HC Greg Gard says Badgers played better than in first loss to Purdue

Agree with Greg Gard?

Wisconsin head coach Greg Gard isn’t ashamed of his team’s effort and resilience in Sunday’s 78-70 loss to No. 3 Purdue.

Speaking postgame, the Badgers head coach said his team played better in Sunday’s loss than it did in February’s 75-69 home loss to the Boilermakers.

“I thought we did a lot of good things,” Gard said. “But again, to come in here and win against this team, you have to make some shots to counter how they plug the paint and obviously with (Zach) Edey inside.”

Wisconsin shot just 20% from 3 in Sunday’s loss, with five makes in 24 attempts. That was actually an improvement on the team’s shooting compared to the last time the two teams met — a 15.8% effort with three makes in 19 attempts.

Either way, Wisconsin showed impressive resilience in the second half. It cut a large deficit to four points late in the second half and was on the doorstep of a colossal upset win before Purdue pulled away.

The biggest positive was freshman guard John Blackwell, who scored 18 points on 7 of 10 shooting and 2 of 3 from 3. Blackwell is fully healthy and growing into a dangerous offensive threat.

It’s never good to lose. But given Wisconsin’s struggles over the last five weeks, this sign of life may be carry into postseason play.

Rutgers basketball closes out their Big Ten regular season against Ohio State

Rutgers basketball faces a big game on Sunday.

On Sunday afternoon, Rutgers men’s basketball will be looking for revenge when they take on Ohio State. In the first matchup between these two teams this season in January, Ohio State recorded a 76-72. While Ohio State has a better record, they will play the role of the underdogs, according to ESPN.

Rutgers is 15-15 (7-12 Big Ten) and coming off consecutive Big Ten losses.

Entering this game, Bruce Thornton has been the Buckeyes’ best offensive player. The Alpharetta, Georgia native is averaging a team-high 16.2 points per game. Against Michigan State on February 3rd, Thornton added 17 points to his resume in 32 minutes of action.

As Ohio State looks to complete the season sweep, they will be tasked with stopping Jeremiah Williams. In 10 games this season, the talented junior is averaging 13.3 points per game. Against Wisconsin on Thursday, he scored 16 points and hauled in two rebounds.

When these two teams met in January, Ohio State pulled out a win partly due to its three-point shooting. Rutgers only shot 25 percent from beyond the arc, while Ohio State shot 45.8 percent. Having Williams in the lineup could help even those numbers out.

Additionally, Rutgers has been hard to beat at home this season where they have posted a 12-4 record at Jersey Mike’s Arena. On the road, Ohio State has gone 1-8. This game should provide plenty of entertaining moments, with both teams having plenty to prove.

Rutgers basketball: Struggles on both ends of the court see Scarlet Knights drop another Big Ten game

Rutgers basketball lost on Thursday night at Wisconsin.

Rutgers basketball struggled defensively on Thursday night at Wisconsin, suffering a second-straight loss in the Big Ten.

With the 78-66 loss at Wisconsin, Rutgers is now 15-15 (7-12 Big Ten). A loss on Sunday against Ohio State would give Rutgers their first losing regular season since 2018-19.

Poor shot selection hurt Rutgers in the second half.

On the offensive side, Rutgers struggled from three-point range, going just 7-of-21. The charity line was anything but with Rutgers making just 60 percent of their free throws.

Sophomore guard AJ Storr led all scorers in the game with 19 points, pacing the offensive effort for Wisconsin Up just 34-32 at halftime, Wisconsin turned things up in the second half as Rutgers struggled to guard from the perimeter.

Jeremiah Williams led Rutgers with 16 points. Off the bench, freshman forward Gavin Griffiths scored 14 points.

First round of Big Ten men’s and women’s basketball tournaments only on one streaming service

More streaming-only games on the horizon:

The first round of the 2024 Big Ten men’s and women’s basketball tournaments will be exclusively broadcast on Peacock, according to a release from NBC Sports.

The women’s tournament began Wednesday, March 6, while the men’s tournament tips off Wednesday, March 13.

The first round of each tournament only includes games between the conference’s bottom four teams — No. 11 vs No. 14 and No. 12 vs No. 13 specifically.

The second round is where most of the real action begins, and is where Wisconsin is currently slated in both brackets.

The Wisconsin women’s team is the No. 10 seed entering the tournament and is scheduled to face No. 7 Penn State at 5:30 p.m. central on Thursday, March 7.

The Wisconsin men’s team, meanwhile, is currently the No. 5 seed with a few conference games remaining. A 2-0 record could bring them to the double-bye category and have them avoid the second round entirely.

Either way, neither Badger basketball team will be playing its Big Ten Tournament contest on Peacock.

Wisconsin guard returns to practice ahead of matchup vs Rutgers

Good news for the Badgers:

Wisconsin guard Kamari McGee returned to practice this week in advance of the Badgers matchup with Rutgers on Thursday evening.

McGee has missed the last 11 games with a lower-body injury. Wisconsin is 4-7 in that time, including a mark of 2-7 in its last nine games.

Related: ESPN Bracketology: Latest update on Wisconsin entering final stretch

The veteran guard was averaging 1.4 points, 0.8 rebounds, 0.4 assists and 0.7 steals in 6.8 minutes per game of action this season before the injury. While the numbers aren’t significant, Wisconsin has dearly missed McGee’s presence as a dependable backup point guard and reliable option. The team’s struggles have been due to several factors, but they also align with when McGee suffered his injury.

Eyes will turn on Thursday afternoon to see if the former UW-Green Bay transfer can suit up for the Badgers home contest against Rutgers.

247Sports’ Evan Flood did add that McGee was not ‘full go’ at practice quite yet, so a return Thursday might be wishful thinking.

More importantly, Wisconsin needs McGee back for its run in the Big Ten and NCAA Tournaments. The last month of basketball has indicated the team may continue to struggle without him.

How to watch Wisconsin basketball vs Rutgers Scarlet Knights

How to watch Wisconsin basketball vs Rutgers Scarlet Knights

Wisconsin basketball returns to the hardwood Thursday for a rematch against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.

The first meeting between these two teams did not go well for Wisconsin — a 78-56 blowout loss on the road at Jersey Mike’s Arena.

Realistically, nothing has gone the Badgers’ way since the start of February. Greg Gard’s team is 2-7 in its last nine contests, falling out of the top four seeds in the Big Ten and almost assuredly out of the top four seed-lines in the NCAA Tournament.

What the Badgers need is momentum, any bit of momentum entering postseason play. The team first gets a chance to do so against a Rutgers team that is now 15-14 on the season and 7-11 in Big Ten play.

Here’s how to watch Wisconsin’s home contest against Rutgers:

  • Date: Thursday, March 7, 2024
  • Time: 7 p.m. ET, 6 p.m. CT

Purdue tops Illinois, clinches outright Big Ten title

This season became a huge missed opportunity for Wisconsin

The No. 3 Purdue Boilermakers (27-3, 16-3 Big Ten) edged No. 12 Illinois (22-8, 13-6 Big Ten) 77-71 Tuesday night, clinching the outright Big Ten regular season title for the second consecutive season.

Standout guard Braden Smith drilled the late dagger, pulling up and hitting a three-pointer to make it a two-possession game with 18 seconds remaining.

Though Illinois controlled the contest throughout, a dominant late surge by the Boilermakers proved too much for the Fighting Illini. The win yet again crowns Purdue as the Big Ten’s best, again setting the program up for a No. 1 seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament.

The Wisconsin-related story here: what a gigantic missed opportunity this season is becoming.

The Badgers entered February ranked No. 6 in the AP Poll and leading the Big Ten standings with an 8-1 record. Since that point, the team is 2-7 with losses to everyone from Purdue to last-place Michigan. The team has crashed down to earth after appearing to be a Final Four contender just five weeks ago.

Could Wisconsin have outlasted Purdue all season? Who knows. But the Badgers were setting the pace just 33 days ago. Now, Greg Gard’s team is down to fifth in the conference standings and no longer a double-bye team in the Big Ten Tournament.

Wisconsin led the Big Ten entering February. It will finish more than six games behind Purdue in the final standings. That’s startling context for Wisconsin’s fall.

Rutgers women’s basketball: Destiny Adams named All-Big Ten

Rutgers women’s basketball forward Destiny Adams named All-Big Ten.

In her first season with Rutgers women’s basketball, Destiny Adams was named an All-Big Ten selection.

The Rutgers forward, a summer transfer from North Carolina, was named All-Big Ten second team on Tuesday. She averaged 15.1 points and 7.4 rebounds per game.

For Adams, who played a shade under 30 minutes a game, her scoring and rebounding numbers were both career-highs. It was an impressive output from Adams, who routinely faced double-teams.

She was also an impressive 50.1 percent from the floor this past season which was another career high. Adams was selected All-Big Ten by the conference’s coaches.

Rutgers faces Minnesota on Wednesday in the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament.

[lawrence-related id=35933,35910,35899]

It has not been an easy season for Rutgers women’s basketball, who went 8-23 (2-16 Big Ten). They’ve lost their last four games.

Injuries and an overall lack of depth made this a difficult year for the Scarlet Knights, in what was their second season of a rebuild under head coach Coquese Washington.

Wisconsin remains on outside of both AP and USA TODAY Coaches Polls

What do you expect from Wisconsin basketball in March?

Wisconsin basketball remains on the outside looking in on the latest edition of both the AP Poll and USA TODAY Coaches Poll.

The ranking is no surprise. The Badgers are off a 0-2 week which saw an inexplicable road loss to Indiana and a demoralizing home defeat to No. 12 Illinois.

Greg Gard’s team is now 18-11 overall and 10-8 in Big Ten play, down significantly from the 16-4 (8-1 Big Ten) marks entering February. That’s what a streak of losing seven of nine will do, especially in a sport as volatile as college basketball.

The Badgers have faced one of the nation’s toughest schedules. But that isn’t an excuse for the steep regression in the last five weeks.

Wisconsin returns to the court Thursday night at the Kohl Center against 15-14 (7-11 Big Ten) Rutgers. The Badgers will look for revenge after suffering a blowout loss to the Scarlet Knights, a loss which was a big part of their big losing skid.
