Big Game Boomer trolls Notre Dame, then argues with Irish writer

There’s really no reason any of this should have taken place, right?

Big Game Boomer is known on Twitter for ranking and listing just about everything in college football. His topics range from coordinator duos to teams’ biggest needs to stadium bathrooms. Another one is the best college football teams this season by state. That’s where you’ll find something very wrong with this picture:

One Irish writer who wouldn’t take this sitting down was Irish Breakdown publisher Bryan Driskell. He quote tweeted a reply in which Boomer tried to justify his decision, and it led to quite the exchange:

If Boomer wants to defend his choice based on how the Irish have done it big games recently, fair enough. It’s not like the Irish have accomplished a lot in those over the past decade. However, to rank Purdue, which won’t even sniff the preseason top 25, over the Irish at this moment is just dumb and reeks of bias.

Whatever. We all know better, and we know the Irish should be in the top 10 all season. Then maybe, just maybe, Boomer will walk his decision back.

Twitter user lists three Big Ten schools Notre Dame should always play

Do you want the Irish to play Big Ten schools more often?

Earlier this summer, a Twitter user known as Big Game Boomer placed Notre Dame in the second tier of college football’s hierarchy. This person, an avowed Oklahoma fan, puts out lists regularly. Not long ago, one list named Notre Dame the best brand in college football, and another listed Kyren Williams and Chris Tyree as the best running back duo for the upcoming season. Now, there’s a new list showing the top 40 rivalries that should be renewed every year but aren’t, and the Irish show up three times for three different Big Ten schools:

A look at future Notre Dame opponents indicates all of them will pop up on the schedule over the next several years. Purdue will visit South Bend on Sept. 18 this year, then the schools will meet every season from 2024 to 2028. A home-and-home with Michigan State will take place in 2026 and 2027. One with Michigan is set to happen in 2033 and 2034.

It really is too bad because the Irish have had healthy rivalries with all of these Big Ten programs over the years. To say it’s a travesty that so many Irish players will come and go without ever facing at least some, if not any, of them is an understatement. Their history and geographic proximity is why one writer recently called for the Irish to join the Big Ten instead of the ACC should it join a conference permanently. Of course, their agreement to play six ACC schools every year means fewer opportunities to schedule everyone they want to play.

Perhaps in the distant future, the ACC agreement won’t be renewed, and Notre Dame will have virtually free reign over its schedule once again. Until then, some great rivalries remain on hold.

MSU’s Ron Burton ranked as one of top 10 D-Line Coaches in College Football

Longtime Michigan State defensive line coach Ron Burton is considered one of the best in the game

Longtime Michigan State defensive line coach Ron Burton is considered one of the best in the game, according to Big Game Boomer.

Big Game Boomer — a well-known Twitter account for making college football-related rankings — pegged Burton as the No. 9 defensive line coach in the country in top 50 rankings released on Monday. Burton was listed only behind Larry Johnson of Ohio State in the Big Ten.

Check out Big Game Boomer’s complete top 50 ranking below:

Burton has been on the Michigan State staff for the past nine seasons and has been coaching for 29 years. Burton was one of only a few assistant coaches Mel Tucker kept on staff when he took over for Mark Dantonio in 2020.

Big Game Boomer puts Notre Dame in second tier of college football

Do you agree with how the Irish are tiered?

Twitter user Big Game Boomer has decided to separate every Football Bowl Subdivision team into tiers. The very best are in the first tier, the teams slightly worse than that are in the second tier and so on. To no one’s surprise, the top tier is home to Alabama, Clemson and Ohio State. Then, he has Notre Dame as one of the teams in the second tier of college football’s highest level:

As you can see, Boomer has Notre Dame on the same level as LSU, Georgia, Oklahoma, Oregon and Boise State. Whatever order you want to put that in, it shows that in at least one person’s opinion, the Irish have one of the nine best teams in the nation. As far as the tiers themselves, he reemphasizes how the Irish have been great but not unstoppable in recent years. Perhaps in the near future, the Irish finally will be able to get over the hump it hasn’t been able to for some time now.

Guessing Notre Dame biggest liability heading into the 2021 season

This group really needs to bring it this fall

Recently the Twitter handle of Big Game Boomer released what they believe is the biggest liability for each of the Power 5 schools. In their estimation Notre Dame’s is the offensive line.

It’s hard to disagree with that, after seeing four of the five starters from last year head off to the NFL. Jarrett Patterson is the only holdover from the 2020 season and while there is still a ton of talent on the various positions on the offensive line, they’re very green. Don’t forget about getting Marshall transfer Cain Madden, the All-American only strengthens the group.

With some talk about true freshman Rocco Spindler and Blake Fisher having a chance to start, you can see where Big Game Boomer is coming from. I don’t see it that way, in my estimation the offensive line will have some growing pains, but should be fine as the season progresses. The biggest area of concern in my mind would be the wide receivers.

The leading WR in terms of yardage, Javon McKinley is gone to the NFL. As is the touchdown leader from last year Ben Skowronek. You might be thinking about Michael Mayer, well he’s a tight end and although a great threat, not as a wide receiver.

Avery Davis is the leading returning receiver with just 24 catches for 322-yards and 2 scores. Braden Lenzy is the second leading returning receiver, he had just 7 receptions last year for under 100-yards.

[lawrence-related id=28475]

The difference is that the talent on the offense line is just green, they don’t have much experience. The same can’t be said about the wide receiver group. Multiple players will need to step up and in my eyes, this position group posses the biggest liability for Brian Kelly and the Irish this fall.

MSU vs. Northwestern listed as one of 2021’s ‘Best Friday Night Matchups’

MSU’s season-opening road trip to Northwestern is considered one of the “Best Friday Night Matchups” of the 2021 college football season.

Michigan State’s season-opening road trip to Northwestern on Sept. 3 is considered one of the “Best Friday Night Matchups” of the 2021 college football season.

Big Game Boomer — a Twitter account known for creating college football-related rankings — revealed its top 25 Friday night games for the upcoming college football season, and the Spartans match-up vs. Northwestern cracked the list. Big Game Boomer has the Spartans’ match-up as the fifth best Friday night game this season.

Big Game Boomer has sometimes been a bit of a Twitter troll in these rankings, but it doesn’t appear that’s the case here. So it’s pretty cool to see the Spartans-Wildcats’ match-up get a little bit of recognition.

Kickoff for Michigan State-Northwestern is scheduled for 9 p.m. EDT on Sept. 3. The game will be televised on ESPN.
