Joel Klatt names Notre Dame as his top school in unique category

There is an argument to be made for which NCAA college football team has the best helmets, with Notre Dame’s all-gold one’s in clear contention.

While many might disagree with Fox Sports college football analysts [autotag]Joel Klatt[/autotag] occasionally outlandish takes, all of Irish Nation can agree that his view on who has the best helmets is the correct one.

When asked a few rapid fire questions, Klatt pondered over which team has the best head-gear. After putting some criteria down, like having to wear them on a regular basis, he came to the conclusion that Notre Dame’s gold accented helmets are the best in all of college football.

While the Irish didn’t get picked as best uniform, the Texas Longhorns all-whites did, while Klatt went with a homer pick of best mascot Ralphie, the live mascot of the Colorado Buffaloes. His favorite tradition was dotting the I of script Ohio at Ohio State, while Klatt’s best environment went to the Alabama Crimson Tide.

There are no other answers. These are the 10 best helmets in college football.

What is the best helmet in all of college football?

If you ask that question to a dozen college football fans and of course they’ll answer with their favorite team and then proceed to name the likes of Notre Dame, Michigan, and Alabama probably before too long.

Great debates were being had on my Twitter feed Thursday morning so I decided to go back into the vault and reexamine my top 10 helmet list that I originally put together during the pandemic.

But sometimes tastes change and things grow stale or old.  With that in mind here are the definitive 10 best helmets in college football.

But first, let’s start with a couple that often gets love but should never be considered among the best for reasons we’ll quickly examine.

Notre Dame football helmets through the years

Think Notre Dame has had the same iconic helmet forever? Think again.

Notre Dame’s iconic gold helmet is always listed among the most recognizable in all of college football.  It may seem that Notre Dame has been wearing those gold helmets forever but that doesn’t mean there haven’t been small tweaks or entire alternate helmets and uniforms worn over the years.

Did you think pride stickers were just an Ohio State thing?  They were once on Notre Dame’s helmet.

As was a shamrock for a few full seasons, not just for a Shamrock Series game.
