College Football Free Predictions, Previews from Winners and Whiners: Week 13

What ten college football games appear to be the best bets and the best picks against the spread going into Week 13? Here you go. Enjoy.

[jwplayer j27zGrqK]

From Winners and Whiners

We’re in Week 13 in College Football and this holiday weekend, we have many great handicapping opportunities, despite the postponements and cancellations. At press time, there are some great marquee games led by No. 22 Auburn at No. 1 Alabama, LSU at No. 5 Texas A&M and Maryland at No. 12 Indiana.

(note:Some of these picks were made by our Editor and are subject to change)

*Auburn has their work cut out for them against Alabama on Saturday in the Iron Bowl. The Tigers have won three straight and did have an impressive 48-11 victory on Oct. 31. But they have lacked the big win to get them back in the top 20. Bo Nix will need the biggest game of his career to give the Tigers a chance. Alabama has Mac Jones, who threw two costly picks in last year’s 48-45 upset by the Tigers. Alabama will not have head coach Nick Saban, who tested positive again (this time with symptoms). The Tide get revenge but they don’t cover the 24 points.

*LSU doesn’t have Joe Burrow at quarterback. They don’t even have starter Myles Brennan. But they do have phenom T.J. Finley, who is getting better have three starts. The Tigers aren’t going to win the title this season, but Finley is a future star. He’ll have a tough road game against Texas A&M, who hasn’t played since Nov. 7. They smashed South Carolina 48-3 in their last game as the Aggies have now won four straight. This is quite a team but they could be rusty this week. Take the points and the Tigers getting 15.

*Maryland is another team that has not played in two weeks due to COVID-19 issues on their team and coaches. They did beat Penn State 35-19 in their last outing on Nov. 7 and as Taulia Tagovailoa threw three touchdown passes. He’ll meet another red-hot quarterback in Michael Penix. The Hoosiers quarterback threw for 491 yards and five TDs in a 42-35 loss at No. 4 Ohio State last week. Indiana didn’t win the game, but they showed they could hang in there against a very good team and forced three interceptions from Justin Fields. This week, they’ll beat up on Maryland at home, so lay the 11 points.

3. Wyoming at UNLV

LINE: Wyoming -16.5
ATS PICK: UNLV
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

UNLV is 0-4, losing every game by double digits.

It started out the season not being able to do much of anything right against San Diego State, it got bombed on by a Nevada team that’s still unbeaten, it got run over by Fresno State, and it struggled against San Jose State.

However, outside of an ugly first half against San Diego State, the Rebels have been able to avoid total annihilation. It also makes a difference that three of the four games – leave Fresno State aside for the moment – were against some of the Mountain West’s best teams.

And that’s what you’re asking for here – avoiding total annihilation at home.

The Rebels aren’t doing a whole lot of things right, but they’re managing to run well at times, they control the clock a bit, and there’s just enough of a pass rush to make a difference.

Wyoming was able to rip up Hawaii when the team from Honolulu had to play in 25ish degrees in Laramie at the end of October, and it lost its two road games against Nevada and Colorado State.

Weather won’t be an issue in UNLV’s new house, and there should be just enough offense to not end up getting rolled by 17. You’ll have to sweat it out – Wyoming will win – but the number is just a wee bit too much.

10. UTSA at Southern Miss

Point Total: 52
PICK: Under
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Let’s start out a fun week full of interesting – and potentially historic – point total predictions with a super-boring under.

Southern Miss has stopped bothering to score. It up up six against Rice, seven against WKU – oh yes, we will get to the Hilltoppers momentarily – and struggled in a 24-13 win over North Alabama. UTSA hung 52 on UTEP last week, but it struggled to get past 20 in four of its previous five games, and even then the explosion came in a 27-26 win over Louisiana Tech.

9. Georgia Southern at Army

Point Total: 40
PICK: Over
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

If someone gives you a point total of 40 you need to go with the over on principle alone.

Of course, the danger with these two running teams is the world’s fastest game – the clock will never, ever stop.

Before last week’s 40-38 win over Texas State, Georgia Southern played three straight games that didn’t get to 40, and Army has been known to play a game or two that didn’t get out of the 30s – including a 14-9 win over The Citadel.

But it’s a point total of 40. You have to go over. You just do. (These two will each get to 20.)

8. Wisconsin at Northwestern

Point Total: 44
PICK: Over
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

What’s the first rule of this piece? If one side has an honest shot of handling the point total all by itself, then you know what to do.

Wisconsin hung up 45 on Illinois and 49 on Michigan. Is it going to score 44 on Northwestern? No way … but it wouldn’t be crazy

The worry here is a Badger defense that could shut down Northwestern to a dead stop – and vice versa – or if the game bogs down into a time of possession-fest with each offense struggling to get to 20.

The more likely scenario is that one side gets to 27ish, the other gets 17ish, and it slips on past a WAY low total considering Wisconsin’s potential to keep the momentum going.

7. Clemson at Florida State

Point Total: 64
PICK: Over
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

What’s the second rule of this piece? IF ONE SIDE HAS AN HONEST SHOT OF HANDLING THE POINT TOTAL ALL BY ITSELF, then you know what to do.

Florida State is an absolute mess right now. The offense isn’t scoring, but even when it sputtered over the last few weeks it was able to get to 16 against Louisville and scored 17 on Pitt.  Clemson’s D is still a bit banged up, and the only time it allowed fewer than 17 so far was against Wake Forest and The Citadel in the first two weeks, and in the 73-7 win over Georgia Tech.

Trevor Lawrence is back, and all you might need to get that 64 is for Clemson to push a get to around 48 – that’s hardly a heavy lift. It’s not going to score 64, but …

6. Virginia Tech at Pitt

Point Total: 54
PICK: Over
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

This is sort of an odd point total that feels like more of a true guess than anything else.

For all of Pitt’s greatness at getting into the backfield, the D gives up plenty of points – 30 or more in four straight games before getting the Florida State free space last week.

Virginia Tech is giving up points, too, struggling against Louisville and Liberty before tightening up against Miami.

54 isn’t a lot to ask for. You’re worried that one of these defenses plays up to what it should be and pitches a gem, but expect each offense to get into the high 20s.

10. Cincinnati at UCF

LINE: Cincinnati -5
ATS PICK: Cincinnati
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

It seems like this should be when Cincinnati gets tripped up, and UCF is certainly dangerous enough to go off and ruin the dream season at home, but this isn’t quite the UCF team of past years.

The offense has been awesome, and the defense hasn’t been totally miserable, but there’s been absolutely no blip in any way for the Bearcats. It’s not just the UC running game that’s dominating, it’s a defense that hasn’t allowed more than 17 points to anyone but Austin Peay in the opener.

If you really thing Cincinnati will win, the five points you’re giving away shouldn’t matter for a team that wins by an average of over 29 points per game.

9. Georgia Southern at Army

LINE: Army -3
ATS PICK: Georgia Southern
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Army always has a way of screwing up the best of ideas and analysis, but here it goes anyway …

Georgia Southern does what Army does in an apples to other apples sort of way, only a wee bit better against better competition.

Army lives on time of possession and ball control – and the Eagles do that better. Army is a runs the ball better than Georgia Southern, but not by much, and Georgia Southern a more effective passing game. The three points aren’t enough to matter – and the +135 on the money line isn’t enough to dive in – but Georgia Southern has been better against better competition than Army has.

8. UCLA at Oregon

LINE: Oregon -13.5
ATS PICK: Oregon
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

As always, begging forgiveness for using a devastating global pandemic to analyze football, especially when it involves college kids …

Oregon was a good call at just under two touchdowns before against UCLA, and now a whole slew of Bruins are questionable to doubtful for the game, including QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson. Meanwhile, as this is being written – stunningly – the line hasn’t budged. It should be at around -17.5 for the Ducks, but even then, that wouldn’t be bad.

7. Kentucky at Alabama

LINE: Alabama -32
ATS PICK: Kentucky
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Alabama is going to win. Kentucky doesn’t beat Alabama at football, and even in a “it’s 2020” sort of way, it’s not going to happen. UK doesn’t have the offense to keep up, and Bama has been consistently awesome at a whole other level. However, Kentucky has enough of a defense – to go along with the deliberate style – to keep the game from getting out of hand.

Blow off that UK just gave up 35 points to Vanderbilt – this will be one of those games that seems like it was even more of a blowout than it actually was.

6. Michigan at Rutgers

LINE: Michigan -11.5
ATS PICK: Michigan
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Michigan is a mess. It’s coming off a brutally embarrassing loss to Wisconsin, coming off a brutally embarrassing loss to Indiana, coming off a brutally embarrassing loss to Michigan State. This is a lost season, Jim Harbaugh is all but off to the New York Jets to be the Trevor Lawrence whisperer, and …

Rutgers still isn’t very good.

Rutgers is better, it’s more competitive, and it has the pass rush and the active defensive front to bother a Michigan backfield that’s been lost over the last three weeks. However, Rutgers lost at home to a bad Illinois team, hasn’t shown enough on offense, and … Michigan owes us for picking it here against IU and MSU.

10. Vanderbilt at Kentucky

Point Total: 42
PICK: Under
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Of course it goes against every fiber of your being to go under on a 42 point total, but there’s a chance this is ridiculously high.

Georgia 14, Kentucky 3. Missouri 20, Missouri 10. Kentucky 24, Mississippi State 2. Kentucky 34, Tennessee 7. The Wildcat defense keeps every came low, and its games are always low-scoring, slow-tempo-fests.

Vanderbilt will be happy to help, scoring 17 or fewer in four of the five games, and just 21 in the other game. UK has the SEC’s No. 1 scoring D, Vandy is last in scoring O – the two teams combine to average 37 points per game.

9. Indiana at Michigan State

Point Total: 52
PICK: Over
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

It hasn’t always been easy, and the defense have helped the cause with a slew of takeaways and other key plays, but Indiana is scoring.

It averages 37 points per game and has been rock-steady at that, scoring 36-37-38. Michigan State has the passing game to hang up enough points to at least keep the pressure on.

The Spartans had a bad day against Iowa, but before that it scored 27 in its previous two games. That’s more like the offense than the clunker in Iowa City.

Really? The point total is this is the same as …

8. Illinois at Rutgers

Point Total: 52
PICK: Under
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Is this the game Illinois starts to score?

The defense hasn’t been anything special, but Rutgers doesn’t have an offense. Don’t get caught up in the point total – even though that’s what you have to do here – the big yards and scoring drives aren’t going to happen.

Illinois has scored a total of 45 points in three games, and it’s not going to hang up the 40ish points Rutgers is allowing per game. This will hardly be scintillating, but don’t expect anything wild and crazy. Be stunned if both teams aren’t at 25 or fewer.

7. TCU at West Virginia

Point Total: 45
PICK: Under
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

You’re not going to take the under, and it’s okay.

It’s a Big 12 game, and both teams have enough scoring pop to make this interesting, but it’s more likely to be a defensive slugfest than a high-powered shootout.

West Virginia has the Big 12’s No. 1 defense in yards and is No. 2 in scoring D, allowing 17 points or fewer in three of the last four games and 27 points or fewer in every game but the 34-27 loss to Texas Tech.

TCU has been into a few big offensive games lately, and it put up 33 points or more in four of the six games, but expect it to be closer to the 20s against this Mountaineer D.

[lawrence-related id=522901]

6. Middle Tennessee at Marshall

Point Total: 55.5
PICK: Over
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

As always, when it comes to the over, we always love the potential of a team to take care of most of the point total all by itself.

Marshall isn’t going to score 56 points, and there’s reason for concern considering its defense is good enough to stop Middle Tennessee cold, but the 55.5 isn’t that much to ask for. The Herd should get close to 40 against a porous Blue Raider defense, and the D will give up a few points.

Middle Tennessee has scored 31 or more in four of the last five games – it’ll get to around 17.

10. Southern Miss at WKU

LINE: WKU -8
ATS PICK: Southern Miss
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Start with this: WKU doesn’t score.

That’s been said several times in several ways over several articles over the the last year or so, but it remains true. The Hilltoppers haven’t scored more than 14 points in any of the last five games, and it’s not like every game has been against a killer defense.

Not scoring against BYU and Marshall is one thing, but a 13-10 win over Chattanooga and a 10-6 loss to Florida Atlantic were thrown in there. Southern Miss has been awful, and the defense is bad, and there hasn’t been enough scoring, and …

Until WKU can prove it can score, take the chance that it can’t win by more than eight.

Speaking of going with the flow until something changes …

Don’t make this any harder than it has to be. Utah State just went through a coaching change – firing Gary Andersen – and hasn’t shown anything positive so far in an 0-3 start.

Again, don’t think, just throw. The Aggies lost by 29, 31, and 25 to Boise State, San Diego State and Nevada, respectively. The offense has been totally inept, and the defense was hammered hard on the ground by the Aztecs and through the air by Nevada.

Fresno State struggled out of the gate, but rolled by Colorado State by 21 and UNLV by 13. Until Utah State shows something different, assume it can’t lose on the road to a decent team by fewer than ten.

8. TCU at West Virginia

LINE: West Virginia -3
ATS PICK: West Virginia
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

West Virginia’s defense is really, really strong.

It’s fourth in the nation, No. 1 in the Big 12, and the team is fantastic at controlling the clock. Being at home seems to really, really matter, going 4-0 in Morgantown and 0-3 on the road. The Mountaineers haven’t been bad on the road, but the defense has been a rock at home.

It helps to get Eastern Kentucky, Baylor and Kansas in your house, but the win over Kansas State was dominant.

The problem? TCU is far better on the road, beating Texas and Baylor, and going 1-3 at home. However, like the Mountaineer defense in this to go along with another big day from QB Jarret Doege, who has thrown for 300 yards in four straight games.

7. Temple at UCF

LINE: USC -26
ATS PICK: Temple
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Temple has shown you absolutely nothing so far. The offense hasn’t been good enough, the defense has been a huge disappointment, and the team overall hasn’t been able to get anything going. Going to the Bounce House to deal with UCF isn’t any cure for playing poorly.

However, the Owls have enough of a passing game to at least put up 28 points or more on the board. UCF is an unstoppable offensive machine, but the defense has been a disaster far too often, and the team has yet to beat anyone by 26. Temple will lose in a blowout, but those are way too many points to give away.

6. USC at Arizona

LINEUSC -14.5
ATS PICK: Arizona
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

USC got the bad game out of the way – at least that should be the case. The Trojans weren’t bad against Arizona State in the miraculous 28-27 win. On the contrary, the secondary was terrific, and the offense was able to move late when absolutely needed in the comeback.

As is the case across college football this year, every team seems to need a week or so to get ready. Blame the early start, blame the opener, blame Arizona State being that good, but USC is better than it showed.

How much has Arizona improved after losing its last seven games? It hasn’t – at least in terms of defensive personnel – and it hasn’t had a chance to get a game under its belt. USC has won seven in a row in the series and nine of the last ten. The passing game is about to bomb away.

10. Ohio State at Rutgers

Point Total: 64.5
PICK: Under
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Three parts to this to make the under happen.

1) Ohio State’s defense let up just a wee bit in last week’s 38-25 win over Penn State. It’s going to have no problem against a Rutgers team that scored a bit in the first two weeks, but the yards aren’t there.

2) OSU head coach Ryan Day felt bad after his team scored a late touchdown against Nebraska and apologized to Scott Frost. He’s not going to run up the score on Greg Schiano.

3) The Rutgers D is just good enough to come up with a few takeaways to keep Ohio State’s O from putting up astronomical numbers. However, the attack will be just fine. Remember, though, 48-14 is an under.

9. Kansas at Oklahoma

Point Total: 63.5
PICK: Over
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Oklahoma 62, Texas Tech 28. That was last week.

You always like the over if one side can take care of most of the work by itself.

The Kansas defense hasn’t done much of anything, allowing 47 or more in four of the last five games and 107 combined in the last two games. The Sooners are still trying to get everything going with the O, and that should mean 50+ points against the Jayhawks.

Kansas will oblige with a courtesy score or two, but demand the Sooners score 64.

8. Iowa State at Baylor

Point Total: 47.5
PICK: Over
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

This is mostly about Iowa State.

The Cyclone offense is getting a huge year out of RB Breece Hall, and QB Brock Purdy is overdue to light it up. Even with the inconsistencies, the Cyclones have scored 31 or more in four of the five Big 12 games it played in so far. Even the game when the O didn’t score much, it was a 24-21 loss to Oklahoma State.

Baylor has allowed 27 points in each of the last three Big 12 games, but can it score enough to get this thing to 48? It should hit around 24 against against an okay Cyclone D.

7. Michigan State at Iowa

Point Total: 46.5
PICK: Over
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Michigan State scored 27 in the opener against Rutgers and 27 again in last week’s stunner over Michigan. So start there and assume the Spartans will be around … 27. However, even though the points haven’t been gushing, the yards haven’t been bad. MSU will move the ball.

You’re a little concerned here that MSU’s defense isn’t bad – it stuffed Michigan and owned Rutgers, at least yardage-wise – and the two Iowa games went 24-20 and 21-20.

In Week 3, Iowa should be a bit sharper and score a bit more than 20. Yeah, you’ll have to sweat it out, but 46.5 isn’t asking for the world.

6. WKU at Florida Atlantic

Point Total: 38.5
PICK: Over
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

If you read this once in a while, you know there’s a threshold when it comes to taking the over around the mid-70s – just don’t. Too many things have to go right for that to happen.

Don’t take unders in college football if they’re around the 30s. Even in a game with the most offensively-challenged teams, one could take care of it all by itself.

All of this pretentious hoo-ha flies in the face of WKU reality. Again, if you read this once in a while, you know that you always, always, always go under on a Hilltopper team that has zero interest in scoring.

WKU has failed to score more than 14 in any of its last four games, and hasn’t scored more than 24 in any of its last seven as a program.

Florida Atlantic isn’t burning it up, either – all three of its games so far failed to get to 40. However, it scored 24 against UTSA and 21 against Charlotte.

It’s just a sad little 38.5 total. Make it feel better and take the over.

10. Pitt at Florida State

LINE: Florida State -2.5
ATS PICK: Pitt
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

This is all about the Pitt defensive front. It’s been a rough run for the Panthers over the last few games in blowout losses to Miami and Notre Dame, but Florida State isn’t in the same world as those two – coming off a 48-16 loss to Louisville – with an improved, but still shaky offensive line.

The Panther D line should live in the Seminole backfield, and all the O needs is for QB Joey Yellen to be merely okay. One note: check the last-second status of QB Kenny Pickett. He’s doubtful on a bum ankle, but there was some thought this week that he could go. If he’s playing, this becomes a pick game.

Bet $1 on the Notre Dame money line, WIN an additional $100 (in free bets) if Notre Dame scores a touchdown this weekend.

9. Arizona State at USC

LINE: USC -11
ATS PICK: Arizona State
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

There are way too many funky parts to this game.

What have we learned about the bizarre 2020 college football season? You’re never crazy to assume super-crazy in the season-openers – we just don’t know what these teams are quite yet.

Arizona State should be good enough all around to at least provide a push, Herm Edwards’ Sun Devils is 1-1 against the Trojans and kept last year’s loss close, and there’s the 9:00 am start time and 4:30 wake-up call to get ready.

USC should win, but -11 is a bit much.

8. Minnesota at Illinois

LINE: Minnesota -7
ATS PICK: Minnesota
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

You owe us, Gophers.

We went in so hard with you against Maryland last week, and it was going just fine until the O stopped scoring the D made the Terps look like Alabama.

The line started out at -9 and is down to -7 against an Illinois team that’s starting former fourth-string QB Coran Taylor and has been picked clean through the air in the first two games.

Minnesota has too many great parts to the passing game to not blow up. More than that, it’s too good to be 0-2, much less 0-3.

7. ULM at Georgia State

LINE: Georgia State -19
ATS PICK: Georgia State
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Georgia State just got whacked 51-0 by Coastal Carolina, but the offense was great in the first four games against better teams than ULM. Just about every team is better than ULM.

The Warhawks aren’t scoring enough with 17 points or fewer in every game but the 35-30 loss to Georgia Southern. They held the score relatively low in the 31-13 loss to Appalachian State, but they’re about to be in for a long day against a Panther team that should be a whole lot sharper.

6. Kansas at Oklahoma

LINE: Oklahoma -38
ATS PICK: Oklahoma
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

It’s policy here to never give up a ton of points to anyone – too many things can go wrong to get the number, and it’s always nice to walk into a stadium up, say, 38-0 – but Kansas keeps jumping over the bar again and again.

Iowa State put up 52 on the Jayhawks. Kansas State hung up 55, Oklahoma State 47, and a relatively punchless Baylor team scored 47.

Oklahoma is only getting 38? The Sooners put up 48 points against Texas Tech before halftime last week – they’re rolling now.

10. WKU at BYU

Point Total: 51.5
PICK: Over
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

This is 100% completely and totally on BYU to do the work.

WKU has become a darling of America’s under crowd because this program really, really, really doesn’t consistently score.

(Amuse yourself with your own joke here.)

It was hit-or-miss in 2019 at putting points on the board, it was bad to start the season, and it has gotten a whole lot worse, failing to get past 14 points in any of the last three games.

But as bad as the WKU offense is, it’s always good for at least 14, with the 13-10 clunker of a comeback win against Chattanooga last week the exception.

Oh, you’ll get your 14 out of the Hilltoppers. You just need BYU to take care of the 38. It has scored fewer than 43 just once in six games.

9. Troy at Arkansas State

Point Total: 69.5
PICK: Over
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

This should probably be a whole lot higher than this on the list – this is going to be a shootout. So why so low?

70 combined points are a promise to no one.

Arkansas State doesn’t play a whole lot of defense, and it helps to have an offense that can put up 50 or more like it did in two of the last three games.

Troy is playing a little bit of defense, but its offense is going to have so much success that Arkansas State will keep pushing, and vice versa. Only one Trojan game got to 70, but the other side will help make that happen.

This thing has the potential to get to 80, but 70 will do.

8. Appalachian State at ULM

Point Total: 56.5
PICK: Over
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

If you’re familiar at all with this piece, you know there’s nothing more wonderful than a point total that one side might be able to handle all by itself.

Appalachian State scored 97 points over the last two weeks. If it goes off, it can put up at least 45 on the board here and could flirt with 50.

ULM is among the nation’s worst teams, and the offense has a lot to do with it. It only scored more than 17 points once all year and has been held to 14 or under in four of the six games, but it’ll get some offense late after ASU takes its foot off the gas.

7. Boston College at Clemson

Point Total: 58.5
PICK: Over
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

If you wait this might go down a bit more. Apparently, Trevor Lawrence is only worth about 4.5 points.

There’s a chance that without The Franchise under center, the Clemson defense steps up and is brilliant, Travis Etienne goes off, and it’s 31-0 at halftime and everything is shut down from there. However, DJ Uiagalelei is the real deal – whether he shows it this week or not – and Boston College has the type of passing game that can score.

You might have to sweat this out a bit, but assume Clemson will get to over 40 like normal, and BC will carry it home form there.

6. TCU at Baylor

Point Total: 46.5
PICK: Over
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Forgive the reckless and irresponsible call here that’s based on nothing but an ingrained belief that doesn’t really apply anymore.

If the Big 12 is going to give you a 46.5 point total, just take the over. If it doesn’t work, it’s not your fault.

Who’s playing? Does it matter? Pick any two teams in the Big 12, slap a 46.5 on it, and go.

Now, Kansas State and TCU didn’t get there in a 21-14 Wildcat win, and TCU was only able to come up with 14 against Oklahoma, but it’s the Big 12. There’s as good a chance that you’ll get the over in the first half as there is of this thing going under.

10. Mississippi State at Alabama

LINE: Alabama -31
ATS PICK: Mississippi State
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Mississippi State has a defense.

It’s been totally lost in all the issues with an offense that looked so great to start the season but now can’t do anything well but give the ball away – not having RB Kylin Hill doesn’t help – but Mississippi State has the SEC’s No. 1 D.

It’s about to get hammered hard by the Alabama offense, but sort of like last week when in the No. 10 spot the call was Syracuse walking into Clemson up 46.5-0, with two weeks off to get ready, you want to give Mike Leach a 31-point lead? Bama should win comfortably, but those are way too many points, even at home.

Week 9 Schedule, Times, Lines, Previews

9. Charlotte at Duke

LINE: Duke -9.5
ATS PICK: Duke
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Fair warning – this is Power Five over Group of Five snobbery run amok.

Duke has lost a few key players, the O isn’t scoring like is should in key moments, and then there are the three biggest issues: turnovers, turnovers, turnovers. The Blue Devils have given it up 22 times in six games. However, Charlotte doesn’t have a pass rush.

Now, the 49ers do lead Conference USA in turnover margin, but that’s more because they don’t give the ball away. The two wins are against North Texas and UTEP … take the Power Fiver, even a struggling one.

8. Rice at Southern Miss

LINE: Southern Miss -1
ATS PICK: Southern Miss
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Yeah, Southern Miss has been a big, giant dud so far, and now it’s on its third head coach in the first six games. There have been a whole lot of problems defensively, but the offense has worked just fine.

It was the first game of the season, and there’s a chance Rice is a whole lot better than it looked against Middle Tennessee. However, the Blue Raiders are right there with USM in the struggle category and they pulled off a 40-34 win in Houston. Southern Miss just needs to win at home.

Week 9 Expert Picks & Predictions: College

7. North Carolina at Virginia

LINE: North Carolina -7
ATS PICK: North Carolina
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Warning … we haven’t been able to get North Carolina quite right all season long. Just when it was time to jump on and enjoy the fun, the Florida State loss happened.

But this should work.

This isn’t your 2019 Virginia team. It’s still plucky, and Bronco Mendenhall isn’t any less of a head coach, but this offense simply isn’t getting it going. Don’t get fooled by the 19-14 loss at Miami – North Carolina has a whole lot more firepower against a team that lost four in a row with three of them by 17 points or more.

Week 8 Expert Picks & Predictions: NFL

6. Hawaii at Wyoming

LINE: Wyoming -1
ATS PICK: Wyoming
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Coming up next are three Big, Big Assumptions about the Big Ten. But first, here’s a medium assumption about the Mountain West.

Sort of like Fresno State showing that it really was a whole lot better than it looked against Hawaii – rolling with ease by Colorado State on Thursday night – Wyoming’s defense is going to be tougher than it showed against Nevada in the opening weekend loss.

Hawaii was able to rock Fresno State with a great defensive performance and strong day on the ground. However, 1) Wyoming’s D will soon be back to normal, especially at home, and 2) the temperature at kickoff in the greater Laramie, Wyoming metropolitan area is expected to be a robust 24 degrees.
