Ben Hall spent 2023 learning to emulate Blake Corum instead of languishing on the bench

He’s a pretty great one to learn from and emulate. #GoBlue

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — In the Jim Harbaugh years, Michigan football had a keen eye on talent that perhaps got overlooked nationally in the scouting process. The Wolverines have had success on that front — from running back Hassan Haskins to wide receiver Ronnie Bell, you couldn’t just write off a lower-rated three-star prospect just because the recruiting services paid them little mind.

It appeared last spring as if Michigan had found another diamond in the rough in former three-star running back Benjamin Hall. Not even the consistent starter for his own high school team in Georgia, Hall was rated the No. 787 prospect in the country and fans asked questions about why he was a take.

Then the spring game came around in April 2023.

The true freshman had early enrolled and was one of the stars of the show. At 5-foot-10, 225 pounds, Hall rushed 13 times for 102 yards and a touchdown, wowing those in attendance and suddenly being projected as the freshman to watch. However, once the 2023 season rolled around, Hall only managed 15 carries for 69 yards and was mostly relegated to the bench.

However, he didn’t hang his head. Instead, he studied the game and those ahead of him on the depth chart. And his time watching instead of playing became a pivotal learning experience in his eyes.

“Where I didn’t see the field, I learned so much from the people in front of me and the coach, Coach Hart, we had. And so I think last year was just as beneficial as it ever could have been in terms of being on the field, off the field. Just showing up here every day and playing against the best guys in the country. So anything I saw on Saturday couldn’t have been better what I was seeing on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.”

One star player from last year who had been particularly fond of Hall and his game was fellow running back Blake Corum, who was perhaps the emotional leader of the team — if not he who most of the production came from. Sitting behind Corum, Hall used his first year to learn from Corum in his senior year — noting that there was a lot he could add to his game once his number was called.

“Since I’ve been here, all I’ve ever tried to do is kind of emulate things he did here, because obviously he’s a Michigan legend,” Hall said. “So part of me wants to hope that he kind of saw a little bit of himself in me in terms of his work ethic and style of play.”

Now Hall is up to 235 pounds and has been getting fall camp accolades. Though a big-time freshman like Jordan Marshall could come in and become that No. 3 running back, Sherrone Moore noted that it would be difficult to usurp Hall.

His ability this offseason has come from implementing the lessons he learned watching Corum on a daily basis. So what was it about Corum that made him so great?

“Just so consistent in everything he does. Shows up every day. Such a great leader,” Hall said. “So I guess just trying anything I can do to emulate what he did would be a huge step in the right direction because he was such a huge part of this Michigan team last year.”

Surprising Michigan football player listed on 247Sports ‘freshmen to watch’ list

He’s already winning over #Michigan fans, the media is now coming along! #GoBlue

Michigan football didn’t overwhelm fans with the caliber of its 2023 recruiting class, especially given that the team was coming off of two-straight College Football Playoff appearances. But, as the 2018 recruiting class — which had a similar lack of fanfare — has shown, stars and name recognition are only part of the equation, not the be-all, end-all.

247Sports put a list together of the 23 true freshmen to watch this upcoming season as they could make an instant impact. While the Wolverines have some obvious candidates, such as defensive tackle Trey Pierce, cornerback Jyaire Hill, wide receivers Semaj Morgan and Fredrick Moore, or edge rusher Enow Etta, writer Brad Crawford picked a player that, when he committed, didn’t get much love from fans.

However, once he showed out in the spring game this year, it made sense that media and fans are starting to see what the coaching staff saw when they offered him.

Benjamin Hall, RB, Michigan — One of the stars of the Wolverines’ spring game, Hall would be higher on this freshman impact ranking if he didn’t have two All-American candidates — Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards — playing in front of him. Hall would likely see a starting role as RB1 at just about every other Big Ten program in 2023 outside of Penn State, Ohio State and Wisconsin. He’s special.

Saying that Hall, a former three-star who often was an afterthought even on his high school team in Kennesaw, Georgia, would likely be the starting running back at most Big Ten schools is high, high praise, indeed. That said, we still need to see him take meaningful snaps outside of a team scrimmage to get a good beat on his career trajectory.

That said, he did impress on April 1, and certainly is changing minds quickly — not just in Ann Arbor, but around the country.

247Sports: One Michigan football true freshman making waves

Michigan appears to have found a gem here. #GoBlue

Michigan football didn’t have the big-named or star-studded recruiting class in 2023 like Jim Harbaugh and the Wolverines have been used to grabbing. But the maize and blue ended the 2023 cycle as the respectable 17th-ranked class according to 247Sports Composite.

The top-ranked recruit to sign with Michigan was defensive lineman Enow Etta and he was the 120th-ranked player in the nation. But it’s nobody ranked towards the top of the 2023 recruiting class that’s receiving a ton of buzz from this spring.

247Sports came out with an article talking about 10 true freshmen that are making waves this spring. Three-star running back Benjamin Hall was the first player talked about in the article.

We’ll start with a player who was far from a household name in the 2023 recruiting cycle.

Benjamin Hall joins a stacked running back room at Michigan which returns one of the nation’s best one-two punches in Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards. But despite this, Hall showed out during Michigan’s spring game, proving that he could handle some carries in 2023.

Hall displayed excellent patience on a few runs between the tackles. He also flashed his ability to finish runs and move the pile. Overall, Hall was impressive. Although he will need to improve his pass protection, he will likely have the chance to be a contributor this season.

Hall is looking like a steal for the Wolverines as the North Cobb High School (GA) standout was just a 247Sports Composite three-star and the No. 755 overall player in the class of 2023. He chose Michigan over the likes of Boston College, Buffalo and Charlotte. Wow — what a find for Jim Harbaugh & Co.

Hall was arguably the star of the game during the Michigan spring game. He ran for a game-high 96 yards and one touchdown. After the game, Mike Hart compared the 784th-ranked recruit to Hassan Haskins and his old teammate, Kevin Grady.

Barring injuries, nobody is going to unseat Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards as No. 1 and No. 2 on the team, but the No. 3 running back is wide open. Going into spring it appeared CJ Stokes held the upper hand with Kalel Mullings on his tail.

But now spring ball us over, the heads on favorite belongs to the diamond in the rough — Benjamin Hall.

5 Michigan football players whose stock is rising after the spring game

Wouldn’t be surprised if by the season’s end, these guys are mainstays. #GoBlue

The dust has settled now that the Michigan football annual spring game is a week behind us. There’s nothing on-field until the team officially readies itself for the 2023 season in fall camp in August.

But there are some players who could find themselves seeing more action on the field sooner than later.

There were a handful of players who made some strong impressions in the spring game who will either play big roles and be big factors or at least could find themselves contributing in ways they hadn’t before.

Here are five Wolverines we feel have a shot to make an impact in 2023 based off what we saw in the spring game.

10 Michigan football players who impressed at the spring game

These guys really stood out on Saturday! #GoBlue

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — There were several key players who didn’t play on Saturday during the annual spring game at Michigan Stadium.

But a number of new faces that could have key roles in the fall shined on Saturday. It was a unique experience for the newcomers playing in The Big House in an actual game setting with fans present.

The Maize squad took down Jay Harbaugh and his Blue team, 22-21. Mike Hart, who coached Maize, called a two-point play with 1:44 left on the clock and then stopped the opposition to win the game,

Wolverine Wire’s Trent Knoop was in the press box on Saturday to watch the game, and he shares which 10 players were most impressive for Michigan.

To note, this isn’t in any particular order, just 10 overall players.

Freshman RB making strong impression on Michigan football’s Sherrone Moore

Could he be a year-one contributor, even in a loaded room? #GoBlue

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Michigan football has an embarrassment of riches in the running backs room. Led by Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards, the Wolverines have the best one-two punch in the country.

But, as we saw last year, if one goes down, you need more bodies who can step up and take on the role.

The Wolverines have a few. Converted linebacker Kalel Mullings performed well in the Big Ten championship game, but fumbled in a key moment in the College Football Playoff semifinal. CJ Stokes was just a freshman last year, but looked good when inserted. Tavierre Dunlap and Isaiah Gash are somewhat unknown commodities.

This year, Michigan brought in two freshmen: four-star Cole Cabana and three-star Benjamin Hall. Though Cabana is the one who grabbed the headlines, Hall has impressed the coaching staff, as offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore noted this week.

“Ben Hall — we knew he was a good back. He showed some things that obviously Mike (Hart) knew,” Moore said. “Mike does a great job recruiting and evaluating guys. And he’s a guy that wasn’t very highly ranked, but he walks the building, his legs are giant — they’re huge. He’s built. He’s always in here. You’ve gotta kick him out. He’s always walking around with a water bottle with his headphones on just always locked in, focused. And he goes on the field, he runs like a train. So excited to see him and progress.”

With the spring game coming up on Saturday, fans will certainly be glued to the early enrollee and how he performs.

Outside of Hall, Moore shared a few other first-year players who have made an early impression, noting the two wide receivers as well as one of the offensive linemen who made it to campus.

“First of all, the guys have been great additions from a culture standpoint, just a great fit. Love all the guys, love all the kids,” Moore said. “Start with the guys up front; all those guys have been awesome. Just excited to keep them rolling and get ready for fall camp. Spring ball’s come and we’ve got the spring game coming up and excited to see the progress of everybody, especially our young freshmen.

“Amir (Herring), just to watch him grow, just to learn the system and see what he’s doing. He’s been really good. Really, really excited about these young receivers, to see what they do. They’ve been — they’re just like little puppies out there, but they’re just full of energy. Full playmaking ability. We’re just excited about that.”

Herring was the sole midyear player who did not get to participate in bowl prep as he partook in a high school all-America game.

Michigan football gets 2023 running back commit

Good news for #Michigan!

Michigan football has added a second running back to its 2023 class on Tuesday, dipping into the south to nab another.

The Wolverines already have Cole Cabana committed, but now they’ve added Benjamin Hall out of Georgia.

From 247Sports:

Kennesaw (Ga.) North Cobb running back Benjamin Hall committed to Michigan on Tuesday morning.

He chooses the Wolverines over South Carolina, who he visited in March, Vanderbilt, Virginia, Boston College, Minnesota and more.

A sturdy, physical 5-foot-10, 225-pound back, Hall joins speedy in-state prospect Cole Cabana now as the two running backs currently committed to Michigan in this class.
