Bengals to finally add rookie RB with UDFA Elijah Collins

The Bengals head to undrafted free agency to find help at running back.

To the surprise of some, the Cincinnati Bengals didn’t add a running back with one of their 10 selections in the 2024 NFL draft.

But it turns out they have undrafted free agency for that.

According to Bleacher Report’s Ryan Fowler, the Bengals have an agreement in place with Oklahoma State’s Elijah Collins, who is fresh off one Super Senior season at Oklahoma State. Prior to that, he spent four seasons at Michigan State, earning a Team Captain slot in 2022.

Collins, 6’0″ and 220 pounds, will battle over the summer for a spot on the depth chart behind Zack Moss and Chase Brown.

Undrafted signings aren’t official until the team announces them.

Bengals to sign undrafted free agent WR Cole Burgess

Another notable undrafted free agent signing for the Bengals.

The Cincinnati Bengals only drafted one wide receiver in the 2024 NFL draft, but have been known to make headway at the position in undrafted free agency most years.

SUNY wide receiver Cole Burgess might just be the next name to prove that idea true.

Not long after the draft ended, SUNY revealed that Burgess will sign with the Bengals.

That means the arrival of a 6’0″, 200-pound target who could carve out a niche for himself in the slot as the Bengals move to a post-Tyler Boyd era.

Bengals to give undrafted free agent LB $15K signing bonus

The Bengals are opening up the checkbook for an undrafted free agent.

The Cincinnati Bengals didn’t address the linebacker position over the course of their 10 selections in the 2024 NFL draft.

Perhaps that was by design.

According to The Draft Network’s Justin Melo, the Bengals will give Wisconsin linebacker Maema Njongmeta a $15,000 signing bonus to sign.

Any sort of cash bonus for an undrafted free agent is notable for the fact it speaks to the team’s level of interest. And with Njongmeta, it makes sense — he tallied 150-plus tackles and 6.5 sacks over the last two seasons in college.

Bengals find Brad Robbins some competition in undrafted free agency

The Bengals will add an undrafted free agent to compete in a punter battle this summer.

The Cincinnati Bengals didn’t use a draft pick on a punter despite having 10 selections in the 2024 NFL draft.

But perhaps that’s because they knew their guy would be there in undrafted free agency.

After the draft concluded, Texas Tech announced that Austin McNamara will head to the Bengals, meaning the team gets a punter who averaged 45.91 yards per attempt over five years.

The move clears the way for a battle with Brad Robbins this summer, whose underwhelming 2023 campaign made the position a need this draft season.

As always, undrafted signings aren’t official until the team announces them.

Local wide receiver Mac Hippenhammer getting chance with Bengals

Mac Hippenhammer gets a shot with the Bengals.

The Cincinnati Bengals are giving a local college star a chance.

Mac Hippenhammer, a wide receiver out of Miami University, was signed by the Bengals as an undrafted free agent.

Laurel Pfahler of the Dayton Daily News wrote that Hippenhammer got signed after a rookie minicamp tryout on May 12 and he is very excited for the opportunity.

In his last season at Miami, Hippenhammer had 54 catches for 768 yards and nine touchdowns totaling 1,632 yards in 26 games in his time with the RedHawks.

“I’m not really like too flashy because I kind of just stay at one level but I’d like to think it looks good,” Hippenhammer said. “Consistency. … I pride my game on being quick and I think this is a great league to exploit those talents.”

Bengals undrafted free agent jersey numbers revealed

Bengals undrafted free agent jersey numbers are now here.

The Cincinnati Bengals didn’t take long to announce their 13-player undrafted free agency class after the start of rookie minicamp.

Offensive lineman Jaxson Kirkland, the guy who might just have the best shot of making the final roster, headlines the class.

That 13-player class provides the team with some key depth at areas like running back that complements the eight-player draft class well.

While things could always change, the Bengals’ official website has jersey numbers down for each of the undrafted free agents now that they’re participating in minicamp.

Here’s a quick look at those numbers for fans who might not recognize all of the faces just yet.

Bengals fill out RB room in UDFA again with Utah State’s Calvin Tyler Jr.

Calvin Tyler Jr. joins the fray in the Bengals RB room via undrafted free agency.

The Cincinnati Bengals entered the 2023 NFL draft with a need at running back and used one draft pick on the position and doled out a notable signing bonus to one undrafted free agent, too.

Not content there, the Bengals also added Utah State’s Calvin Tyler Jr. on the undrafted free-agent market, according to The Draft Network’s Ryan Fowler.

Tyler ran for 1,122 yards and seven scores on a 4.4 average last year and caught 15 passes, with TDN’s Damian Parson explaining some of his strengths:

Calvin Tyler Jr. is a fun football player. He checks the boxes for the prototypical scat running back. He has a short and squatty frame that offers some dynamism in space. He also has quick footwork to change gaps when defensive colors flash. He presses gaps with patience before finalizing his decision. His open-field burst offers optimism regarding his potential as a receiving back. A low center of gravity allows him to hide behind the OL as he maneuvers the box to find an open lane.

Tyler checking in at 5’8″ and 210 pounds might work against him in the pros as he could be relegated to niche roles. But he’s got the productivity and testing the coaches like.

The Aggies standout will be in a roster battle with his two fellow rookies behind the likes of Trayveon Williams and Chris Evans this summer.

Bengals to sign UDFA Alabama LB Jaylen Moody

The Bengals add to the LB unit via undrafted free agency.

The Cincinnati Bengals will dip back into the Alabama Crimson Tide pool via undrafted free agency and linebacker Jaylen Moody.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Bengals will sign Moody, reuniting him with third-round pick Jordan Battle.

Moody, a late draft visit with the Bengals before the event, is 6’2″ and 225 pounds and recorded 50 tackles, two sacks and a fumble recovery last season.

BamaCentral’s Christopher Walsh wrote the following:

Moody was a little hit-or-miss as he finished seventh on the team in tackles with 49.0, including 7.5 for a loss and two sacks. At Texas, he led the Crimson Tide in tackles with 10, and had a sack. Against Arkansas he had eight tackles including two for a loss and one sack. At LSU he was credited with nine tackles, including 2.5 for a loss. That might be enough to get him into a training camp, but probably not drafted.

Moody will get a chance to make the final roster over the summer as he competes with others on the back end of the depth chart. Familiarity with one of the team’s most important draft picks won’t hurt.

Bengals WR room gets even faster with Auburn’s Shedrick Jackson

Another WR for the Bengals thanks to a signing in undrafted free agency.

The Cincinnati Bengals spent much of the 2023 NFL draft adding stunning athletes at key positions such as wide receiver.

Then the personnel department did it some more in undrafted free agency.

The Bengals agreed to sign Auburn wideout Shedrick Jackson, per AL.com, a 6’2″ wideout with some of the best athletic testing numbers in the draft, including a 4.31-second time in the 40-yard dash.

The Draft Network’s Damian Parson listed some of his positives:

Shedrick Jackson checks the boxes as a height and weight receiver prospect. He is well-portioned with a rocked-up frame. He uses his frame to his advantage versus smaller cornerbacks. His toughness shows as he works for yards after the catch. He has good play strength and contact balance after the catch.

The numbers:

There’s about to be an all-out fight on the back end of the depth chart after the Bengals added Charlie Jones and Andrei Iosivas in the draft to a depth chart that also has Stanley Morgran, Trent Taylor, Trenton Irwin and Kawmie Lassiter behind the big three.
