Should Bengals go after waived Eagles DE Derek Barnett?

Should the Bengals go after Derek Barnett?

Over the last few years of Cincinnati Bengals football, we’ve raised the point of Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Derek Barnett as a possible trade candidate.

Now Barnett is set to be a free agent after the Eagles waived him on Friday.

The 14th overall pick in 2017, Barnett never surpassed 6.5 sacks in a season with the Eagles and last year saw his playing time take a nose dive. Things escalated over the last few weeks, as he was a healthy scratch in Week 9 and recently listed as out due to personal reasons.

Despite that spiral that led to his departure in Philadelphia, Barnett is still just 27 years old and inheriting his contract wouldn’t cost all that much.

More importantly, the Bengals could really use some better pass-rushing depth after a brutally slow start for the likes of Joseph Ossai. Adding Barnett now could help the defense carry the Joe Burrow-less offense while also giving the team a look at a guy who might be able to be part of the long-term plan.

As always with waiver claims though, the Bengals won’t get first priority if they choose to go after Barnett on the wire.

Tee Higgins tops a list of upcoming NFL free agents

A free agency list shows Tee Higgins in a top spot.

The Cincinnati Bengals aren’t giving up on the 2023 season just yet, but the national perspective has started to look toward the future with so many teams out of the running already.

And looking ahead, it’s pretty clear that the Bengals will again have one of the offseason’s top overall free agents.

One year removed from Jessie Bates being a top free agent, wide receiver Tee Higgins will top the market at his position.

Pro Football Focus’ Brad Spielberger agrees in his latest free agency look-ahead, which ranks the wideouts as so:

  1. Tee Higgins, Cincinnati Bengals
  2. Michael Pittman, Indianapolis Colts
  3. Mike Evans, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  4. Marquise Brown, Arizona Cardinals
  5. Calvin Ridley, Jacksonville Jaguars
  6. Darnell Mooney, Chicago Bears
  7. Tyler Boyd, Cincinnati Bengals
  8. Gabriel Davis, Buffalo Bills
  9. Michael Thomas, New Orleans Saints
  10. D.J. Chark, Carolina Panthers

We’ll see just how many of those names make it to free agency, including Higgins. The Bengals could always opt to use the franchise tag to prevent that.

While it won’t stop needy teams from paying up big, Higgins has had a rough contract year while being limited to just seven games due to a fractured rib and later a hamstring injury suffered in practice.

Free-agent TE says he can help Joe Burrow’s Bengals offense

A familiar name says he could help the Bengals.

The Cincinnati Bengals aren’t currently getting much from the tight end position after the 4-3 start coming out of the win over the San Francisco 49ers.

One free agent says he can help open up the offense.

Eric Ebron says he can “open the whole middle field” for Joe Burrow’s offense, which is an interesting idea given the Bengals look like a team that could use a trade before the deadline to get some help at the spot.

Signing an outside free agent might be more preferable to giving up assets in a trade, no matter how much fans might want to see the team trade to get Hayden Hurst back.

But Ebron, 30, hasn’t been on a team since 2021, when he spent two years with the Steelers and needed time after the season to get medical clearance after injuries.

Unfortunately for tight ends and fans who want to see a move made at the spot, the Bengals offense just isn’t all that interested in utilizing the position and that might not change, even with Irv Smith Jr. struggling.
