Pirates’ Ben Gamel made this electrifying diving catch look easy to save an extra base hit

Ben Gamel sure is no stranger to heroic catches in the outfield!

Baseball fans have seen Ben Gamel make acrobatic saves in the outfield many times, but the Chicago Cubs have now been on the receiving end of his heroics twice in the span of a year.

On Monday, the Cubs were playing host to the Pittsburgh Pirates with Christopher Morel up to bat in the bottom of the third. Tied 1-1 with one out, Morel smacked a ball to left field looking to start the scoring once more for the Cubs.

Instead, however, Gamel had other plans in the outfield, as the 30-year-old made this incredible full diving leap to snag the line drive before it went over his head. Look at him fly!

It’s awesome that Gamel’s carving himself a legacy in the MLB of making some ridiculous diving catches. The athleticism needed to pull all these dramatic snags off is something else.

What a catch!

This has been the silliest of weekends for Major League Baseball, with two players – Tommy Pham and Joc Pederson – fighting over an old fantasy football move done way back in 2020.

While that story has been absolutely hilarious, there have been some great moments on the field the past few days, too.

Take what Pittsburgh Pirates left fielder Ben Gamel did last night in San Diego, for instance. This dude was tracking a laser hit to left when he launched himself toward the wall and made an incredible catch that robbed Eric Hosmer of a home run.

This was a thing of absolute beauty.

So good.

It’s a bird! It’s a plane!

It’s a bird. It’s a plane. No, it’s Ben Gamel with perhaps the MLB’s catch of the year!

On Sunday, during the Pittsburgh Pirates game against the Chicago Cubs, Gamel stepped up and delivered a stunning diving catch to save runs from being scored. With one out in the bottom of the seventh, and with men on first and second, Cubs’ Willson Contreras slapped the ball to deep left field for what seemed to surely be an extra-base hit.

Instead, however, the ball hung up just long enough for Gamel to get in range to make a spectacular superhero-like dive to record the out and keep Chicago’s runners from advancing on the play.

Here’s a freeze-frame of the mid-air moment, for your enjoyment.

Talk about laying out to make a play! Even though the Pirates gave up their lead later in the inning and eventually lost the game, Gamel’s effort has to be applauded here for an insane diving catch. Bravo!
