LAS VEGAS – Jake Paul and Ben Askren had their first faceoff ahead of their boxing match on Friday, and they were unable to keep hands off each other.

Following a press conference where many words were exchanged between the two sides, Paul and Askren came face to face for a stare down. After some jawing at each other, Askren turned to walk away and put his hand across Paul’s face. That caused Paul to respond, shoving Askren from behind as the former Bellator and ONE Championship titleholder briefly stumbled forward.

The altercation stopped there, and both men went on their way.

The Paul vs. Askren boxing match headlines the Triller Fight Club event on April 17. The card takes place at Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta and airs on pay-per-view.

Video: Jorge Masvidal joins Jake Paul vs. Ben Askren press conference via FaceTime

Watch Jorge Masvidal make an appearance during the Ben Askren vs. Jake Paul pre-fight press conference.

It seems [autotag]Ben Askren[/autotag] just can’t escape former foe [autotag]Jorge Masvidal[/autotag].

The former Bellator and ONE Championship titleholder had a brief visit from Masvidal during Friday’s pre-fight press conference promoting his boxing bout against YouTube star [autotag]Jake Paul[/autotag]. Masvidal, who’s trained with Paul in the past, answered FaceTime call in the middle of the press conference, and had a message for Askren.

“Are you still alive?” Masvidal said when put on speaker. “Tell him I like them flip-flops.”

Paul shortly hung up after getting the call and wasted no time to follow up and attempt to roast the retired MMA fighter for being on the receiving end of the fastest knockout in UFC history. Askren was stopped by a flying knee from Masvidal just 5 seconds into their welterweight clash back at UFC 239 in July 2019.

“It doesn’t bother you that you got knocked out in five seconds?” Paul said. “It doesn’t bother you? It doesn’t really happen. It’s happened once, you literally have the record.”

Like a seasoned veteran of the fight game, Askren shrugged it off. And when Paul vowed to do the same Masvidal did against Askren in the April 17 pay-per-view bout at Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta, the two-time NCAA Division I national champion had a simple counter-argument.

“I don’t think you’re allowed to throw knees in boxing, Jake,” Askren said.

“Viewers on April 17 will be immersed into a world unlike anything they could imagine – a true movie-like experience that reinvents the great sport of boxing by taking them into the ring in ways they’ve never seen before, and also deep into the behind-the-scenes action with our fighters and musical performers as it unfolds in real time,” Emmy-winning filmmaker
Bert Marcus stated. “We’re thrilled to have Pete, Mario, Taylor, Dixie and Charli as well as Snoop, Ray, Al and Mike as our incredible commentating team to lead people through the action. They will be unapologetically themselves, creating a vibe that is culturally savvy, raw and unexpected.”

Former Bellator and ONE Championship titleholder Ben Askren boxes Paul in the main event. It will be Askren’s first boxing match and first combat sports action since retiring after a three-fight UFC run to close his MMA career.

Sean O’Malley: Jake Paul has to beat Ben Askren ‘to show he’s a legitimate boxer’

Sean O’Malley sees Jake Paul’s upcoming boxing match against Ben Askren as a must-win matchup for the YouTube star.

[mm-video type=video id=01f1mersxrh9garxa1 playlist_id=01eqvpne7c1q486dvv player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01f1mersxrh9garxa1/01f1mersxrh9garxa1-4ca5a9d6604664b064a00002def06d65.jpg]

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Sean O’Malley[/autotag] sees [autotag]Jake Paul[/autotag]’s next boxing match as a must-win.

YouTube star-turned pro boxer Paul meets [autotag]Ben Askren[/autotag] in an eight-round bout under the Triller banner on April 17 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

Though Paul is yet to compete against a pro boxer, he will be facing a combat sports athlete for the first time. Askren is a decorated wrestler and former ONE Championship and Bellator welterweight champion, making him Paul’s sternest test to date.

O’Malley says he’s looking forward to watching the fight and thinks if Paul wants to prove his worth in boxing, he must get past Askren.

“There’s not a lot of fights that excite me, and this ain’t gonna be the best boxing fight,” O’Malley told reporters, including MMA Junkie, at UFC 260 media day on Wednesday. “This isn’t gonna be like a good, technical boxing fight, but I’m excited. I’m excited for that fight. I’m gonna watch it. I’m gonna be excited fight week. I’m gonna watch if they have any little Embeddeds or whatever they’re putting out. I’m watching.

“I wanna see that fight. I don’t know, Ben vs. Jake, it’s exciting. It’s gonna be a sloppy, sloppy fight. Ben’s gonna make it sloppy, which is good for him. Jake, he looks like he’s training hard. He’s young, he’s athletic, so if he doesn’t beat Ben Askren, we’ll see where he goes from there. He has to beat Ben to show he’s a legitimate boxer.”

[lawrence-related id=594563,593981]

But despite Askren’s accolade-filled career and experience, O’Malley is leaning towards Paul to get the job done if he’s able to pace himself throughout the fight.

“I wanna say Jake because he’s gonna be a better boxer,” O’Malley said. “Ben’s such a good competitor – it’s not gonna be a good boxing fight. It’s gonna be grueling. God, I hope Jake doesn’t come in there and try to put his lights out in the first round, two rounds. He’s gonna gas out and Ben’s gonna be there.

“Ben’s gonna be there all eight rounds. I don’t think Ben’s gonna gas. I think if Jake comes out calm, stays calm fight week, stays calm fight day, doesn’t get too excited and just blow his load the first couple of rounds, I think he can outbox him. If he stays behind his jab and doesn’t let Ben do what Ben wants to do, I think Jake could get the job done.”

Justin Bieber, Snoop Dogg, more to perform at Triller’s Jake Paul vs. Ben Askren event

If the fights don’t have you interested, perhaps the A-list performers will?

The [autotag]Jake Paul[/autotag] vs. [autotag]Ben Askren[/autotag] event won’t just have boxing matches. It’ll have A-list musical performers, too.

On Wednesday, promoter Triller Fight Club announced a star-studded lineup of performers during the April 17 pay-per-view event at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The card is headlined by a boxing match between Paul and Askren.

Among the names set to perform are Justin Bieber, The Black Keys, Doja Cat, Saweetie, Diplo, and Major Lazer. Additionally, Mt. Westmore, a newly comprised hip-hop group featuring rap legends Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Too $hort, and E-40 also will perform.

“Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Bert Marcus will lead and direct the creative storytelling for the Triller Fight Club event,” according to a press release.

“Triller has already begun to revolutionize the great American sport of boxing,” Marcus said, in a statement Wednesday. “I’m proud to be taking it to the next level and lead the direction of an unprecedented sporting event through the lens of music entertainment and unmatched behind-the-scenes access, particularly during this time when people haven’t had many chances to have (shared) important cultural experiences.

“This incredible lineup of talent is proof that this ground-breaking new format is craved by fans and artists alike. This event will be unlike anything anyone has seen, think ‘Stranger Things’ meets Tarantino.”

[lawrence-related id=596137,596114]

Additional boxing matches on the card include a super lightweight fight between Regis Prograis and Ivan Redkach, former UFC heavyweight champ Frank Mir vs. former light heavyweight and cruiserweight boxing champion Antonio Tarver, as well as Joe Fournier vs. reggae musician Reykon.

The event will stream live on FITE.

Dana White wants to bet $1 million Jake Paul loses to Ben Askren; Paul counters with $2 million

Dana White doesn’t like Jake Paul’s chances against Ben Askren, and is willing to put his money where his mouth is.

Dana White doesn’t like [autotag]Jake Paul[/autotag]’s chances in his boxing match with [autotag]Ben Askren[/autotag], and is willing to put his money where his mouth is with a seven-figure bet.

Paul, a rapper, actor and YouTube personality, is set to compete in his third professional boxing bout on April 17 when he meets former Bellator and ONE Championship titleholder Askren under the Triller Fight Club banner.

Askren remains under UFC contract following his retirement from MMA in November 2019, and was granted permission by UFC president White to take the bout with Paul. Despite Askren having no pro boxing experience, White strongly believes he has a large advantage over Paul, and said he would be willing to bet $1 million on the outcome.

“He talks a lot of sh*t,” White said on the “Hotboxin’ with Mike Tyson” podcast. “We’re going to find out. I hope you can bet on this thing because I’ll f*cking bet a million dollars that he loses this f*cking fight. A million dollars that he loses this fight.”

[lawrence-related id=593981,593826,589323]

White comments quickly reached Paul’s radar, and he’s seemingly more than willing to take White up on the bet. Paul said he would even take it a step further, though, and pushed White to up his price to $2 million, which he’s willing to match and preemptively put into a bank account before the fight takes place.

“Dana let’s double the bet up! $2 Million,” Paul wrote on Instagram. “We wire the money into escrow. $4 million total. Winner takes all. My team will be in touch to make a contract. After I knockout Ben, we can set up Jake Paul Vs. Dana White 2021 since you consider yourself a ‘Boxer’ and me a ‘YouTuber'”

https://www.instagram.com/p/CMQhrjUBvCZ/

It remains to be seen if White accepts Paul’s altered proposition. But it’s clear he’s quite confident in Askren’s ability to win against someone with a fraction of the combat sports experience.

“Let’s be honest: Jake Paul is not a f*cking boxer – this guys a f*cking YouTube kid,” White said. “Let me tell you about this kid: So the kid he’s going to fight is a wrestler, a real good wrestler, a decorated wrestler, but he’s actually fought real guys. He’s been a world champion in other organizations.”

Triller’s Ben Askren vs. Jake Paul boxing pay-per-view books Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta

The boxing match between former ONE Championship and Bellator titleholder Ben Askren and YouTube star Jake Paul is headed to Atlanta.

The boxing match between former ONE Championship and Bellator titleholder [autotag]Ben Askren[/autotag] and YouTube star Jake Paul is headed to Atlanta.

Triller Fight Club on Monday announced Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta will host the April 17 pay-per-view boxing event, which will come with a $49.99 price tag.

A news release from Triller said the four-hour card will start at 8 p.m. ET, but non public tickets will be sold. Instead, Triller’s release said “a very limited number of fans and guests will be selected to join in the live event, with details to be announced in the coming weeks, and everything will be subject to stringent local, state and federal protocols due to COVID-19.”

Mercedes-Benz Stadium is the home of the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons and played host to Super Bowl LIII in 2019. The Askren-Paul card will be the stadium’s first fighting event there.

[lawrence-related id=589323,584706,584639]

The Askren-Paul fight is scheduled for eight rounds. Paul is 2-0 in his professional boxing career. In his debut, he beat fellow YouTuber AnEsonGib with a first-round TKO. He then had a brutal second-round knockout of former NBA standout Nate Robinson. The fight against Askren will be his first against an opponent with professional combat sports experience.

The fight will be Askren’s first pro boxing match. He has not fought since his three-fight run in the UFC ended with back-to-back losses and a subsequent retirement in November 2019. Those two losses, the only ones of his MMA career, started with a 5-second knockout setback to Jorge Masvidal, which put him on the wrong end of a likely permanent highlight reel.

In addition to the main event, former UFC heavyweight champion [autotag]Frank Mir[/autotag] is scheduled to box Antonio Tarver on the undercard.

Jake Paul: ‘Serious opponent’ Ben Askren will get knocked out quick in boxing match

“I don’t think Ben (Askren) is scared. But guess what? You don’t have to be scared of someone to get your ass kicked.”

[autotag]Jake Paul[/autotag] promises he’s not taking [autotag]Ben Askren[/autotag] lightly.

Paul, a YouTube personality, actor and rapper who has transitioned to the boxing world and instantly become a polarizing figure, is scheduled to clash with former Bellator and ONE Championship titleholder Askren in an eight-round bout under the Triller banner on April 17. A location for the event has not been disclosed.

Due to his previous life before combat sports and the antics he’s displayed since coming over, Paul has gained a reputation for being brash and outright ridiculous. He’s poked his fun at Askren since the fight was announced, and Askren has engaged with him right back.

Paul can honestly admit that’s all just promotional fodder, though. He said he’s training hard behind the scenes and is well aware that no matter what approach he takes, he’s not going to be able to get to Askren mentally off-track before they step in the ring.

“I don’t think Ben Askren is the type of guy to have any mental weakness at all,” Paul told MMA Junkie. “He’s going to go into the fight completely confident. He’s going to be focused in on what he’s going to do. I know he’s the type of guy that likes the sh*t talk, that likes the joking. I think the content that he’s posting is funny, as well. He’s funny. He’s got a good personality. There’s still going to be a lot of sh*t talk back and forth. I don’t hate the guy, but he’s going to get his ass kicked, and he looks like a middle aged Dutch woman. I like to make fun of him.

“His striking ability sucks. He punches like a 4th grader. So there’s going to be the sh*t talk in the build up, but I’m not doing any of it to get into his head. He’s gone up against championship opponents. The Robbie Lawlers, the Demian Maias, the Jorge Masvidals – I don’t think any of those guys got into his head at all. I don’t think Ben is scared. But guess what? You don’t have to be scared of someone to get your ass kicked. He can be as prepared as he wants and as mentally ready as he wants, but the outcome will still remain the same.”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxBwUhabdFQ

Paul is adamant he’s preparing himself accordingly to step in the ring with Askren, who will be making his professional boxing debut. In additional to standard boxing training, Paul said he relocated his camp to Miami because of the higher density of MMA fighters in South Florida who can help him get ready for the non-traditional look Askren may bring.

One of those fighters is Jorge Masvidal, who unforgettably finished Askren with the quickest knockout in UFC history with a five-second flying knee at UFC 239 in July 2019.

Masvidal may not have got much time in the octagon to feel out all of Askren’s game, but Paul said “Gamebred” offered valuable insight as to what’s coming his way.

“(Masvidal) said, ‘Look, Ben is going to try to hang onto you and wrestle you and clinch you and try to wear you out,'” Paul said. “We were just working on clinch drills and fighting on the inside, and he was trying to show me how to knock out Ben faster than he did. So, we’ll see what happens. I might go running at Ben right in the first two seconds to try to break (Masvidal’s record). But Masvidal is great. He’s very supporting. He’s always been my homie and supported me, and that goes both ways. I’m excited to see if I can knock out Ben faster than Masvidal.”

Although Paul claims he has big respect for Askren, he’s made no secret a fast win is in his mind. Askren, for his part, has predicted a seventh-round TKO in the fight, but Paul doesn’t see it going anywhere near that long.

For Askren, the fight will mark a return to competition after he retired from MMA in early 2020. He underwent a hip replacement surgery in the time since and told MMA Junkie in January that his motivation for fighting Paul was simply to make money and get himself back in top shape.

[lawrence-related id=589045,585709,584706]

Askren said he’s getting a lot of support going into the match, as well. He recently revealed he would soon be training with famed boxing coach Freddie Roach and will also have good friend and former UFC champion Tyron Woodley in his corner when he faces Paul.

None of that changes what Paul thinks will happen when they step in the ring together, though.

“I’m expecting a quick knockout,” Paul said. “I don’t see him making it out of the first round. I know he’s tough. I know he’s going to work hard. He can get whoever he wants to train him. People forget that Floyd Mayweather was calling Nate Robinson almost every day to give him tips and advice on boxing, and guess what? Floyd’s not getting in the ring. Freddie Roach is not getting in the ring for Ben. Tyron Woodley isn’t getting in the ring for Ben, and by the way if he did, I would beat the sh*t out of Tyron Woodley. It’s a loser training another loser. He can get whoever he wants. It’s still going to be a quick night. He can train as hard as he wants. It doesn’t matter. My athleticism, my speed, my power, my accuracy is too much for these guys to handle.”

It may sound like a cocky prediction from Paul, but he said it all stems from confidence in his own abilities. Paul only has a mere two boxing bouts on his resume. However, he’s still certain Askren can’t hang with him.

“This guy is 19-2 (in MMA), he has less losses than (Conor) McGregor, he’s a two-time NCAA Division wrestling champion, he’s an Olympic athlete,” Paul said of Askren. “I wanted to challenge myself. I know this is a serious opponent. It’s going to be a movie. Eventually I want to fight Conor McGregor – I want to show the MMA world, ‘Be careful before you come over here and try to box us.’ You saw what Floyd did to McGregor. You’re going to see what I do to Askren.”
