Fight Vault: Top 5 Fedor Emelianenko fights

Welcome to Dan Tom’s “Fight Vault,” in which MMA Junkie’s fight analyst delves into the archives for his top five Fedor Emelianenko fights.

With MMA’s current breakneck schedule, it can be easy to lose sight of individual fighters or forget the sport’s history altogether.

[autotag]Fedor Emelianenko[/autotag], for example, will compete for the 46th time as a professional this Saturday in Moscow, Russia at Bellator 269. Although there are still hardcore fans who remember the unique feelings that Emelianenko brought to the MMA space throughout the early and mid-00s, many fans of today are quick to forget the context of time and the historical importance of these characters.

For that reason, I thought it would be fun to revisit some of my favorite fights from Emelianenko’s catalog.

Like all lists via The Fight Vault or The Protect Ya’ Neck Podcast, I do not proclaim this to be some sort of definitive list. These are simply just my personal favorite fights from Emelianenko, as I hope that these selections inspire you to either revisit old classics or remedy the blind spots that exist in your fandom.

So, without further ado…

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, [autotag]Fedor Emelianenko[/autotag] (39-6 MMA, 3-2 BMMA) fights in his home country for the first time in more than five years when he takes on [autotag]Tim Johnson[/autotag] (15-7 MMA, 3-3 BMMA) at heavyweight. Johnson, fighting in hostile territory, is a -160 favorite at Tipico; the comeback on Emelianenko is +125. Also on the main card, [autotag]Usman Nurmagomedov[/autotag] (13-0 MMA, 2-0 BMMA) will try to keep his unbeaten record intact against [autotag]Patrik Pietila[/autotag] (11-8 MMA, 0-1 BMMA) in a 160-pound contract weight fight. Nurmagomedov is a massive -3000 favorite, and not surprisingly he’s a unanimous pick.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Anatoly Tokov[/autotag] (29-3 MMA, 5-0 BMMA) is a huge -750 favorite at middleweight against [autotag]Sharaf Davlatmurodov[/autotag] (18-3-1 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) and is our third unanimous choice.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Emelianenko (66 percent), Minakov (91 percent), Nurmagomedov (92 percent) and Tokov (83 percent) are the choices.

Tim Johnson brushes off the aura of Fedor Emelianenko, plans to play spoiler at Bellator 269

Tim Johnson won’t be rattled by the aura of the legendary Fedor Emelianenko at Bellator 269.

[autotag]Tim Johnson[/autotag] won’t be rattled by the aura of the legendary Fedor Emelianenko at Bellator 269.

Johnson (15-7 MMA, 3-3 BMMA) is positioned as the spoiler going into Saturday’s event as he travels into VTB Arena in Moscow to fight Emelianenko (39-6 MMA, 3-2 BMMA) in the heavyweight headliner, which airs on Showtime following prelims streamed on MMA Junkie.

The former PRIDE FC champion Emelianenko is widely regarded as one of greatest fighters in MMA history. His decorated resume through more than 20 years in the game speaks for itself, and although he’s very much at the tail end of his career, he’s still a one-of-a-kind figure in the fight game.

Johnson admits he’s felt that going into Bellator 269. He said he was a little bit in awe of the fact he got this fight after first signing the contract for it, but said as time passed during training camp, the image of Emelianenko blended into just another opponent.

“I think if you allow yourself to, you can probably get wrapped up in that pretty quick,” Johnson told MMA Junkie and other media during Tuesday’s Bellator 269 virtual media day. “When the fight was announced for the first couple weeks it was like, ‘I’m fighting Fedor.’ Then now it’s 100 percent focus on it just being a fight. The first couple weeks I allowed myself to drift off into that type of thinking, but now this is a fight. This is what I get paid to do and this is for my family and my future. This is just an opponent who is in front of my goals.”

[lawrence-related id=1377205,1376976]

Not only has Johnson nullified the essence of Emelianenko in his mind, but he’s prepared for the environment he’s about to walk into on Saturday. Emelianenko hasn’t fought in his native Russia since June 2016, and the crowd is certainly going to be raucous in his favor.

Johnson said he doesn’t expect what will be a very pro-Fedor crowd to impact him, though.

“I embrace that,” Johnson said. “How many people get to experience stuff like that? That’s the way I look at it. Coming out here and fighting the Russian in his home country. I don’t think very many people are going to experience that.”

Johnson knows the significance of this fight against Emelianenko for his career. He fell short of the Bellator interim heavyweight title in June when he lost a unanimous decision to Emelianenko’s pupil, Valentin Moldavsky, at Bellator 261 in June.

Although some things have to play out in the heavyweight division before Johnson can fight for any version of the belt again, he knows going into hostile territory and snatching a win over Emelianenko would do wonders for his stock.

“A win over Fedor – I don’t know if that gets me right back into title contention,” Johnson said. “Maybe another fight with me and Cheick (Kongo) go a third time. I don’t know what’s happening with (Vitaly) Minakov and his contract going on and where he’s fighting from hereon out. Maybe after this fight we have a No. 1 contender fight and just have to wait and see what happens with Ryan Bader and Moldavsky (in their title unification fight).”

Spinning Back Clique: World’s best light heavyweights, Fedor’s GOAT status, Jon Jones, more

Check out this week’s “Spinning Back Clique,” MMA Junkie’s weekly show that takes a spin through the biggest topics in mixed martial arts.

Check out this week’s “Spinning Back Clique,” MMA Junkie’s weekly show that takes a spin through the biggest topics in mixed martial arts.

This week, we look at the best light heavyweights in the world, the return of Fedor Emelianenko, Jon Jones’ ban from his longtime gym, Aspen Ladd’s coach’s tactics and the UFC Fight Night 196 main event.

Our “Spinning Back Clique” panel of “Gorgeous” George Garcia, Nolan King and Danny Segura discuss these topics along with host John Morgan.

  • [autotag]Corey Anderson[/autotag] picked up a big knockout of former champion Ryan Bader to move into the light heavyweight tournament final for a shot at Bellator champ [autotag]Vadim Nemkov[/autotag]. He also proclaimed himself the best 205-pounder in the world – which UFC champ [autotag]Jan Blachowicz[/autotag] took issue with. But are Bellator’s light heavyweights better than the UFC’s?
  • [autotag]Fedor Emelianenko[/autotag] returns Saturday at Bellator 269 to take on Tim Johnson in Moscow in his home country of Russia. Fedor long was considered the best heavyweight of all time, but that GOAT status has come into question in recent years. So is he the best heavyweight in MMA history?
  • Former UFC light heavyweight champion [autotag]Jon Jones[/autotag], considered arguably the greatest fighter of all time, has been banned from training at his longtime JacksonWink MMA gym in Albuquerque, N.M., in the wake of his latest arrest – this time on domestic violence-related charges. Our panel reacts to that news.
  • [autotag]Aspen Ladd[/autotag] returned for the first time in nearly two years, but never could get rolling against Norma Dumont in a unanimous decision loss in the UFC Fight Night 195 headliner. Before the fourth and fifth rounds, her coach was particularly harsh with her verbally, and it drew a lot of criticism in the MMA world. Did he go too far?
  • [autotag]Paulo Costa[/autotag] takes on [autotag]Marvin Vettori[/autotag] in the UFC Fight Night 196 main event Saturday. Does the winner have a fast track for a title shot against middleweight champ Israel Adesanya?

“Spinning Back Clique” is released each Tuesday on MMA Junkie’s YouTube channel. You can watch the full episode in the video above.
