Bellator 256 post-event facts: Lyoto Machida falls to 0-4 in rematches

Check out all the facts and figures from Bellator 256, which took place Friday in Uncasville, Conn.

Bellator’s second event of the year took place Friday with Bellator 256 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.

The opening fight of the Bellator light heavyweight grand prix headlined the card. Former champ [autotag]Ryan Bader[/autotag] (28-6 MMA, 6-1 BMMA) became the first man to advance to the semifinal round when he beat [autotag]Lyoto Machida[/autotag] (26-11 MMA, 2-3 BMMA) by unanimous decision, avenging a knockout loss from August 2012.

For more on the numbers, check below for 15 post-event facts to come out of Bellator 256.

Scott Coker provides timeline on Bellator return to hosting events on the road

When it comes to hosting events outside the bubble at Mohegan Sun, Bellator president Scott Coker “can see light at the end of the tunnel.”

UNCASVILLE, Conn. – When it comes to hosting events outside the bubble at Mohegan Sun, Bellator president Scott Coker “can see light at the end of the tunnel.”

Coker said Friday night that the promotion, which is owned by media giant ViacomCBS, has been in communication with the “Viacom-COVID task force” about hosting events on the road now that COVID-19 restrictions have begun to ease nationwide and more than 66 million people have been fully vaccinated.

“We’ve had conversations with them about moving forward and getting out of the bubble and start promoting fights (on the road),” Coker said at the Bellator 256 post-event news conference. “We are monitoring the tiers, the different colors of tiers like they have in California – as to what tier L.A. is, what tier the Bay Area is. How can we promote effectively and make sure it works financially for us?”

[lawrence-related id=602071,602057,602018]

Unlike the UFC, which already has two pay-per-view events with full crowds scheduled April 24 in Jacksonville, Fla., (UFC 261) and May 15 in Houston (UFC 262), Coker indicated that having limited states fully reopened wouldn’t work for Bellator.

“If it’s still a locked-down version throughout the country except for a couple states, it’s gonna be tough. But when everything does open up, we will definitely get on the road,” Coker said. “I can see light at the end of the tunnel. I just think everybody has to be patient. We’re gonna be here (at Mohegan Sun) through the June fights anyway, but maybe at the beginning of July or end of July, August, September, in that timeframe, we’ll definitely be on the road at some point. Already talking to the venues that we normally go to. I think before the end of the year you’ll see Bellator on the road in a big way.”

Following a five-month hiatus, Bellator returned on July 24 and has held all 13 of its domestic events at Mohegan Sun Arena. The promotion, however, did complete a brief stint of European shows last September/October, hosting three events in Milan, Italy and becoming the first major MMA promotion to host an event in France with Bellator Paris on October 10.

Bellator 256 results: Cat Zingano shows slick ground game in armbar submission win

Cat Zingano is now 2-for-2 in Bellator and has her hopes up for a featherweight title shot after a nice showing.

[autotag]Cat Zingano[/autotag] is on a roll in Bellator and looking for gold.

Zingano, a former UFC bantamweight title challenger, picked up her second promotional win in as many fights Saturday night, submitting [autotag]Olivia Parker[/autotag] with an armbar at Bellator 256. The finish came at the 2:56 mark of the first round.

Zingano (12-4 MMA, 2-0 BMMA) didn’t waste time looking to take the fight to the mat, shooting for a takedown after throwing a head kick in the opening 10 seconds. After some clinch work against the cage, she eventually got Parker (4-2 MMA, 0-1 BMMA) down and immediately started to display a slick ground game.

Zingano transitioned from taking Parker’s back to securing full mount to securing her back again before Parker managed to reverse the position. But even then, Zingano remained poised and smooth, and she quickly seized on an opening to lock in an armbar as she went belly down.

The finish was the first submission win for Zingano since October 2012 when she defeated Raquel Pennington by rear-naked choke at Invicta FC 3.

Now with back-to-back wins, the 38-year-old Zingano made her intentions clear with a looming women’s featherweight title fight between champion Cris Cyborg and Leslie Smith next month.

“I am in a run for gold,” Zingano said. “I know who’s the best. I’d love to get a shot at the title here in Bellator.”

Bellator 256 video: Diana Avsaragova scorches in debut with 29-second knockout

Diana Avsaragova just needed 29 seconds to debut at Bellator 256.

[autotag]Diana Avsaragova[/autotag] sure made a statement in her Bellator debut.

The 22-year-old Russian prospect picked up a 29-second knockout over Tara Graff on Friday night at Bellator 256 in Uncasville, Conn.

Avsaragova (3-0 MMA, 1-0 BMMA), making her promotional debut, made quick work by countering Graff, who was pressing the action, and hurt her early with a right hand. Just seconds after the shot that stunned and dropped Graff to a knee, Avsaragova connected with another right hand as Graff popped up, which laid her out on the canvas.

You can watch the finishing sequence below (via Twitter)

Avsaragova, a wrestling and grappling specialist, made her professional MMA debut in 2017, which she won by first-round submission. She wouldn’t fight again until 2019 and then followed up with her third at Bellator 256 in a big way.
