Bellator champ-champ Patricio ‘Pitbull’ would love a go at Adrien Broner

Now that Bellator’s on Showtime, Patricio Freire hopes to get a crossover fight with one of the network’s prime boxing stars.

Bellator lightweight and featherweight champion [autotag]Patricio Freire[/autotag] has a date for his next fight: a defense of his latter title belt against Emmanuel Sanchez at Bellator 255.

And while that April 2 bout was officially announced at Bellator’s Tuesday news conference, another major item seems to have caught his attention: Bellator’s new partnership with Showtime, which kicks off with “Pitbull’s” card at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn.

Freire doesn’t just see big things for Bellator with the new Showtime deal. He sees the potential for crossover fights, too. Specifically, Showtime-promoted boxing star Adrien Broner.

“I like that we can put Bellator in this division,” Freire said in Portuguese through a translator. “And also we can do a boxing match. I’m looking for that, too. I can beat that (expletive).”

Broner has held titles in four different weight classes. And while Freire has proven to be a belt collector himself, he says a potential boxing match isn’t about collecting gold, but just the challenge in and of itself.

“I like challenges. In boxing, you have someone who is good, I want to fight him,” Freire said. “I don’t care about the titles. I care about the challenges. I put myself in a dangerous (situation) and take care of that.”

Any chance of “Pitbull” engaging in a big boxing match is long down the road, at best. And in the meantime, he’s got quite the challenge ahead of him in the Bellator featherweight grand prix semifinals.

Freire and Sanchez already have met once, and Sanchez gave “Pitbull” one of the toughest fights of his career before falling by unanimous decision at Bellator 209.

Perhaps that’s why Freire hasn’t made a grudge match out of this like he does for most of his bouts, including his last fight against Pedro Carvalho or the one he’s trying to cook up with Broner. Sanchez and “Pitbull” have earned one another’s respect as they vie to meet A.J. McKee in the final.

“Pedro is a young man. He got the loss, now he’s going to make himself a better fighter,” Freire said. “I know he’s a good boy. So with Sanchez, I fought him and I know he knows it was a war, so that’s why we have a respect for each other.”

Why A.J. McKee prefers Emmanuel Sanchez over Patricio ‘Pitbull’ in grand prix final

It’s got nothing to do with A.J. McKee trying to dodge the current champ-champ.

[autotag]A.J. McKee[/autotag] hopes to meet a newly crowned champion in the Bellator featherweight grand prix final.

The 145-pound contender prefers to face Emmanuel Sanchez over current champion Patricio Freire for his next fight.

Freire and Sanchez meet April 2 in the main event of Bellator 255 in Uncasville, Conn., in a featherweight grand prix semifinal bout. Freire’s title will be on the line, and the winner will then defend against McKee in the finals on a date to be determined.

Although Freire is the more well known fighter, McKee (17-0 MMA, 17-0 BMMA) would rather fight Sanchez at the end of the tournament. And it’s not that McKee is dodging Freire, he just has plans for the current champ-champ at another time.

“I feel that just puts the icing on the cake in the 145-pound division alongside just to fuel the fire from previous altercations and just the badgering mouth that has been ran between him and I,” McKee said regarding Sanchez. “It’s time to put an end to that, so I wouldn’t mind whooping his ass and then moving up to 155 pounds and taking the belt from Patricio at 155. But regardless, I’m looking to eat the cake.”

McKee has been vocal for years about wanting to move to different a weight class in the future. He hopes to become a two-division champion in Bellator.

But for now, having submitted former champion Darrion Caldwell in his last outing to move to the grand prix final, McKee is enjoying the down time and until he gets a name on April 2 for his next fight.

“I’m the type of person that can’t stop training until the job is done,” said McKee. “So I’m just staying active, staying busy, trying to enjoy the time off snowboarding little bit and enjoying life. Just not burning out, you don’t want to stay in the gym too long and then burn out. So I’m just enjoying life a little bit and have a week in, a week out. Once I see who the opponent is, that’s where I begin to take things serious.”

Bellator has a new television home.

The Viacom-owned promotion announced an exclusive partnership with premium cable network Showtime on Tuesday in a special announcement press conference.

Showtime will be the exclusive home for Bellator live events and the partnership kicks off Friday, April 2 with Bellator 255, which is headlined by a featherweight title fight between Patricio Freire and Emmanuel Sanchez in a Bellator featherweight grand prix semifinal.

“We’ve been interested in MMA for quite a while,” said Stephen Espinoza, Showtime Sports president. “We have a long history with MMA that goes back for 15 years to the dates of Elite XC and Strikeforce. We built some big names and stars: (Daniel) Cormier, (Luke) Rockhold, (Roda) Rousey, (Gilbert) Melendez and on and on. And of course, we’re the first to bring MMA to a national televised network and of course that was CBS way back in 2008. The time just felt right to combine forces Bellator has matured and elevated itself at a point where it now belongs in premium television network.”

The two featherweights are set to clash April 2 in the main event of Bellator 255 in Uncasville, Conn., the promotion announced Tuesday. The title bout is part of the Bellator featherweight grand prix semifinals. It’s a rematch from 2018 when Freire (31-4 MMA, 19-4 BMMA) out-pointed Sanchez (20-4 MMA, 12-3 BMMA) at Bellator 209 in Israel.

Freire  is coming off a first-round knockout of Pedro Carvalho last November at Bellator 252. Freire, who holds both the lightweight and featherweight titles, is currently on a six-fight winning streak. Freire also has defeated Juan Archuleta in his run in the gran prix.

Meanwhile, Sanchez defeated Daniel Weichel at Bellator 252 in November to advance to the semis. Sanchez is on a three-fight wining streak since losing to Freire. The 30-year-old Sanchez has bested Tywan Claxton, as well, in his grand prix run.

The winner of Freire vs. Sanchez 2 will meet A.J. McKee in the final. McKee recently submitted former Bellator champ Darrion Caldwell to advance to the final.
