Patricky Freire gives update on health after Bellator 249 late withdrawal

Patricky Freire isn’t sure when he’ll be cleared to fight after the incident which pulled him out of Bellator 249, but he’s doing his best to stay ready.

UNCASVILLE, Conn. —Last time [autotag]Patricky Freire[/autotag] was in town, he had a memorable experience, but not for the best of reasons.

Friere (23-9 MMA, 14-7 BMMA) was scheduled to face Jaleel Willis in the co-feature bout of Bellator 249 on Oct. 15, but he was pulled from the card just hours before the fight due to vertigo-like symptoms.

Now he’s back at Mohegan Sun Arena, where he’ll corner the other half of the “Pitbull Brothers,” Patricio Freire, in the main event of Bellator 252 as Freire defends his featherweight belt against Pedro Carvalho as part of the featherweight Grand Prix.

Patricky Freire gave MMA Junkie an update on his health Tuesday, where, ultimately, they’re still not sure what’s afflicted the lightweight standout.

“Two years ago I had a fight and a similar thing happened,” Freire said, in an interview partially done in English and partially through an interpreter. “It was strong but not quite as strong. It comes and goes, dizzy some days and not dizzy others. Pretty much. I haven’t been diagnosed with anything but it snuck up on my pretty quickly.”

[lawrence-related id=565450,565403,565222]

Like any fighter who put in the time and effort to get to fight day and then has the rug pulled out from under them right before go time, Freire was adamant he be allowed to fight when he was first told he wasn’t cleared for his bout. In hindsight, though, he realizes the commission made the correct call in pulling him out of the fight.

“Yes, that night I said to my brother, ‘no, no please let me fight,'” Freire admitted. “I’m ready to fight, I trained, I don’t care if I’m dizzy I’ll go out and fight. But after that night I stopped and think about it and it was the correct decision. It is better for me.”

Since doctors are still trying to figure out what’s up, Freire remains in a state of limbo. The symptoms come and go, so he puts in the training work when he feels up to it. All he can do for now is do his best to stay in shape so that when he’s cleared, he’s ready to quickly step in. Preferably against one of the higher-ranked names in his division.

“I’m continuing to train and stay in shape,” Freire said. “I’m weighing 170 pounds, trying to keep my weight down and stay fight ready. I don’t know when my next fight will be but I am continuing to stay in shape in case something comes up.”

Patricio Freire: With respect, Pedro Carvalho should ‘prepare to be killed’ at Bellator 252

Patricio Freire sees Brazil vs. Portugal as a heated but respectful MMA rivalry.

UNCASVILLE, Conn. – [autotag]Patricio Freire[/autotag] waited his turn and he’s finally up.

After an eight-month delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Freire (30-4 MMA, 18-4 BMMA) will step into the cage for his featherweight grand prix semifinal fight against [autotag]Pedro Carvalho[/autotag] at Bellator 252 on Thursday.

“I feel great,” Freire, the Bellator featherweight and lightweight champion, told MMA Junkie on Tuesday. “I’m well-prepared for this fight. It’s been a long while. I am prepared to win this fight and get that $1 million and move on in the tournament.”

Across major online sportsbooks, Freire recently opened as a massive favorite, as high as 9-to-1 (according to BestFightOdds). While Freire thinks he’s the better fighter, he sees the odds as a bit disrespectful to his opponent Carvalho (11-3 MMA, 4-0 BMMA).

“I don’t like that at all,” Freire said. “I know that this guy is young. He’s hungry. He’s coming. He’s really hungry for this title. He’s Conor McGregor’s teammate at SBG. That is a well-prepared team so I am expecting the best possible fighter on the other side but prepare to be killed. Prepare to be eliminated from the tournament.”

[lawrence-related id=565225,565243,565197]

The elimination will be a culmination of a career’s worth of work, but in particular, two training camps for the same fight. Freire and Carvalho were supposed to fight at Bellator 241 in March but the event was canceled hours prior to the scheduled start time due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

“You can always find something even all the way up to the day of the fight, whether it’s a technique or a strategy that you can improve upon,” Freire said. “We’re ready to show that the strategy we’ve had is basically the same. Not too much has changed. The strategy is to go in there and execute Pedro.”

Since their pairing first became known in September 2019, Freire and Carvalho have exchanged words in person and on social media. Despite the rivalry that a fight between Portugal and Brazil brings, Freire sees a silver lining of respect, too.

“He did what he had to do,” Freire said. “He’s selling the fight. He’s got to sell the fight. He’s got to sell himself. Portugal and Brazil have a history but we’re brothers and sisters. They are very passionate people, especially about MMA – just as Brazilians are passionate about MMA.

“I’m sure that on Thursday night, Nov. 12, he goes in there 100 percent and I have to do my job. I’m a professional fighter and my job is to go in there and eliminate him. That’s what I’m prepared to do. Don’t miss this fight.”

Bellator 252 takes place Thursday at Mohegan Sun Arena. The main card airs on CBS Sports Network after prelims on MMA Junkie.

Scott Coker on Bellator grand prix return, Vadim Nemkov’s next fight, Anderson Silva free agency, more

Ahead of Belaltor 252, Scott Coker talks various topics with MMA Junkie.

UNCASVILLE, Conn. – As November progresses, Bellator continues its stretch of weekly events with another Thursday card.

Bellator 252 takes place at Mohegan Sun Arena and is headlined by a featherweight title fight between champion [autotag]Patricio Freire[/autotag] and challenger [autotag]Pedro Carvalho[/autotag]. The main event doubles as a Bellator grand prix semifinal fight, with the other quarter of the bracket, [autotag]Emmanuel Sanchez[/autotag] vs. [autotag]Daniel Weichel[/autotag], kicking off the main card.

Ahead of the card, Bellator president Scott Coker spoke with MMA Junkie on a number of topics, which included the featherweight grand prix’s return, [autotag]Corey Anderson[/autotag]’s promotional debut, the light heavyweight title picture, the impending free agency of MMA legend [autotag]Anderson Silva[/autotag], and [autotag]Aaron Pico[/autotag]’s career progression.

Pedro Carvalho in no doubt ahead of Bellator 252 title tilt: ‘I will shock the world’

Portuguese contender Pedro Carvalho chats to MMA Junkie ahead of his featherweight title fight against Patricio Freire at Bellator 252.

[jwplayer zfCgqHsI-FLu19iir]

Portugal’s [autotag]Pedro Carvalho[/autotag] has had to sit tight and wait, but his shot at the Bellator featherweight title has finally arrived.

Carvalho (11-3 MMA, 4-0 BMMA) will take on reigning two-division champion Patricio Freire for the 145-pound title in the quarterfinals of the featherweight grand prix at Bellator 252. The event takes place Thursday at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. The main card airs on CBS Sports Network/DAZN following prelims on MMA Junkie.

Carvalho booked his place in the last eight of the tournament with a second-round submission of Sam Sicilia at Bellator 226 in September 2019, and Freire (30-4 MMA, 18-4 BMMA) used his “champion’s choice” clause to pick the Portuguese fighter as his quarterfinal opponent.

The pair were set for a showdown in March but, with the fighters already weighed in and ready to go, the event was canceled on the day of the show as Bellator shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

It meant Carvalho’s shot at championship glory was put on hold while the promotion went into hiatus. But now, with Bellator now safely holding events in their “Fightsphere” at Mohegan Sun, “The Game” is ready to return to the cage and is as confident as ever that he can dethrone “Pitbull” and advance to the semifinals as Bellator’s new featherweight king.

Ahead of fight night in Uncasville, Carvalho chatted to MMA Junkie to share his thoughts ahead of the biggest fight of his career to date.
