Kate Jackson understands why she’s being underestimated before Bellator 236

Underestimation is expected, but Kate Jackson doesn’t think that’ll deter her from victory at Bellator 236.

[autotag]Kate Jackson[/autotag] totally gets it: She’s going to be underestimated heading into her first Bellator title challenge.

On Dec. 21, Jackson (11-3 MMA, 3-1 BMMA) takes on women’s flyweight champion Ilima-Lei Macfarlane (10-0 MMA, 9-0 BMMA) at Bellator 236 in Honolulu.

Taking on a dominant champion in her own backyard? Why wouldn’t she be underestimated?

“I don’t go out of my way to read about myself on social media, but probably,” Jackson told MMA Junkie, when asked if she’s being underestimated. “She’s undefeated, and it’s her home fight. There’s obviously always going to be more focus on her.

“That’s not something I have an issue with. I’m never particularly outgoing or anything like that. If the focus is on my opponent, that’s really not a problem for me.”

Underestimated or not, Jackson said it doesn’t change the reality of the situation. The United Kingdom-based fighter Jackson thinks she presents Macfarlane a tough challenge – especially on the ground.

“I think it’s a good matchup, ground-wise,” Jackson said. “I think it was only her last opponent who was a brown belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. That seemed to be the fight that gave her the most problems, obviously up until the point she adjusted and stopped her. I think that definitely bodes well, really.”

Jackson’s opportunity to compete for gold in a major promotion has been a long time coming. Jackson, 33, has been competing as a professional for more than 10 years. While every fight is important in the grand scheme of things, Jackson doesn’t deny this is the biggest fight of her life..

“To a point, every fight is (your biggest) – this one definitely,” Jackson said. “It’s been a long time coming. I feel that I’ve gotten to a point in my game where I feel like it’s all coming together. We’ve worked on my striking an awful lot this year, as well. Getting my brown belt at the end of last year, the higher level jiu-jitsu competitions I’ve been doing. I think it’s all come at the right time.”

Fight fans are in for a good one, according to Jackson. Unwilling to predict an exact method or final outcome, Jackson thinks the matchup with Macfarlane will be exciting, regardless.

“I’m just really convinced it’s going to be an exciting fight,” Jackson said. “Obviously, so far she always ends up taking the fight to the ground. That seems to be where she wants the fight to go. That’s not something I have an issue with at all. But, obviously it starts out standing.

“So I’m looking forward to exchanging strikes, before we take it to the ground and see how things are.”

Bellator 236 free fight: Juliana Velasquez pummels Kristina Williams to remain undefeated

As Kristina Williams covered up her head, Juliana Velasquez began unloading on her opponent’s body.

Later this month, women’s flyweight contender [autotag]Juliana Velasquez[/autotag] returns to action at Bellator 236 and looks to keep her undefeated streak alive.

Brazil’s Velasquez (9-0 MMA, 4-0 BMMA) has inched closer and closer to a title shot with every victory. A win over her Bellator 236 foe, Bruna Ellen, could finally propel her into title challenger status.

In her most recent outing at Bellator 224 in July, Velasquez’s full striking arsenal was on display. Taking on Oklahoma’s Kristina Williams, Velasquez ended the fight in the second round.

After picking apart Williams in the first, Velasquez went for the kill in round 2. Velasquez’s body shots really proved to be the difference. Utilizing slick boxing, body kicks, and her ability to throw combinations at multiple levels, stopped the fight by strikes.

After stunning Williams with a hard right to the head, Velasquez swarmed. As Williams covered up her head, Velasquez began unloading on her opponent’s body. Referee Jacob Montalvo saw enough and waved off the bout at the 4:03 mark of round 2.

The loss was Williams’ second in five fights, while the victory pushed Velasquez to 4-0 under the Bellator banner.

Bellator 236 free fight: Watch Ilima-Lei Macfarlane’s first win in Hawaii

Next month, one of Bellator’s most popular champions will headline in front of her home fans once again.

Next month, one of Bellator’s most popular champions will headline in front of her home fans once again.

[autotag]Ilima-Lei Macfarlane[/autotag] (10-0 MMA, 9-0 BMMA) will put her women’s flyweight title on the line against British challenger Kate Jackson (11-3-1 MMA, 3-1 BMMA) in the Bellator 236 main event, which takes place in Honolulu in Macfarlane’s native Hawaii.

The 29-year-old Macfarlane has won four straight title fights, all by stoppage. She won Bellator’s inaugural 125-pound women’s belt in November 2017 with a submission of Emily Ducote. After that, she submitted Alejandra Lara and Valerie Letourneau in 2018 title defenses, then stopped Veta Arteaga with a doctor’s stoppage TKO in April.

[lawrence-related id=456816,453164]

But perhaps the most thrilling of those title defenses came nearly a year ago when Macfarlane got to fight at home for the first time. At Bellator 213 in Honolulu, she fought former UFC title challenger Letourneau and electrified the fans with a third-round submission.

In a few weeks at Bellator 236 at the same Neal S. Blaisdell Center, Macfarlane will try to stay perfect, and go 2 for 2 in Hawaii, when she takes on Jackson. But ahead of that title fight, check out the first time Macfarlane fought in Honolulu in the video above.

A clash between rising bantamweights is on tap for Bellator’s return to Hawaii.

At Bellator 236, highly touted [autotag]Raufeon Stots[/autotag] will make his promotional debut when he takes on [autotag]Cheyden Leialoha[/autotag] on the evening’s main card. A promotion official informed MMA Junkie of the booking Wednesday afternoon.

Bellator 236 will take place Dec. 21 at Neal S. Blaisdell Center in Honolulu. The main card will stream on DAZN after prelims on MMA Junkie.

Stots (12-1 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) makes his debut after signing with the promotion in early October. Highly regarded as one of the top bantamweight prospects in North America, Stots is riding a four-fight winning streak.

Most recently, Stots competed for LFA. In his three outings for the promotion, he defeated all comers, including fellow top prospect Levi Mowles.

Leialoha’s opportunity at Bellator 236 comes on the heels of his participation in an open tryout held in Honolulu on Nov. 2. Hawaii’s Leialoha (7-1 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) impressed the promotion’s brass enough to offer him a main-card slot on the second leg of a two-night doubleheader to be held in his home state.

The 25-year-old Leialoha is one fight removed from his appearance on the inaugural season of Dana White’s Contender Series. After losing to John Castaneda on the show, Leialoha picked up a submission victory in April 2018.

Additionally, three preliminary card matchups have also been added to the evening’s undercard. A welterweight matchup pits [autotag]Kona Oliveira[/autotag] (1-2 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) against Honolulu tryout signee [autotag]Ben Wilhelm[/autotag] (3-0 MMA, 0-0 BMMA).

Flyweights [autotag]Nate Yoshimura[/autotag] (0-0 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) and [autotag]Chas Dunhour[/autotag] (0-1 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) will collide, as well as lightweights [autotag]Dustin Barca[/autotag] (3-0 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) and [autotag]Brandon Pieper[/autotag] (11-13 MMA, 0-1 BMMA).

Neiman Gracie will make the trip to the Aloha State next month.

[autotag]Neiman Gracie[/autotag] will make the trip to the Aloha State next month.

A former Bellator welterweight title challenger, Gracie (9-1 MMA, 7-1 BMMA) will meet former UFC fighter [autotag]Kiichi Kunimoto[/autotag] at Bellator 236, promotion officials confirmed to MMA Junkie following a report from ESPN on Tuesday.

Bellator 236 is expected to take place Dec. 21 at Neal S. Blaisdell Center in Honolulu. The main card will stream on DAZN after prelims on MMA Junkie.

Gracie most recently competed at Bellator 222 in June. While he suffered a loss to Rory MacDonald that night in the semifinals of the welterweight grand prix tournament, Gracie competed against the then-champion for all five rounds.

The defeat was the first of Gracie’s career. Prior to the loss, Gracie handed Ed Ruth his first defeat. Gracie defeated the former Penn State wrestler by fourth-round submission in the grand prix’s opening round.
