‘The sky is the limit’: Clemson coaches high on Williams to have sophomore surge

There are high expectations for this sophomore wide receiver, with WR coach Tyler Grisham seeing some similarities to Hunter Renfrow.

Antonio Williams led Clemson in receptions and receiving yards as a freshman last year, but his coaches think he still has plenty of room to grow.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Clemson coaches raved about Williams, who is entering his sophomore campaign this fall.

One of the coaches that spoke highly of Williams was Garrett Riley, who is entering his first season as the Tigers’ offensive coordinator.

“I know he’s gotten faster,” Riley said of Williams. “The guy is physically in a better place than where he’s been at. The sky is the limit for him. He was really, really good for us, really productive this spring. I thought he was consistent the whole way through, but I think physically, and probably his confidence level is growing; he’s a confident kid anyway. The guy has made a lot of plays here already, but he’s going to continue to make a lot more for us.”

Head coach Dabo Swinney had similar praise for the former four-star recruit.

“Physically, he’s in a different place. He’s mentally in a different place,” Swinney said. “He has a different understanding. I thought he hit a wall a little bit last year, and then he kind of came on and found himself again… it’s amazing how far he’s developed. I mean, you look at him; he’s thicker, he’s bigger, faster and stronger. And that’s what should happen if you’re putting the work in.”

Williams’ position coach, Tyler Grisham, added that he reminds him of Hunter Renfrow with the way Williams stays calm and even-keeled.

As the Tigers’ primary slot receiver, Williams finished 2022 with 56 receptions for 604 yards and four touchdowns. He also returned 15 punts for an average of 8.6 yards per return.

With the way the coaches are praising him, Williams could be in store for a breakout sophomore season this fall.

Following Clemson’s 31-30 loss to South Carolina on Saturday at Death Valley, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney provided an injury update on sophomore wide receiver Beaux Collins.

Collins left the game with an injury in the second quarter and did not return. He came out of the locker room after halftime in street clothes with a sling.

“It’s his shoulder again. His shoulder came back out,” Swinney said. “I appreciate him trying to really push through. It’s something that we’ve got to fix after the season. But he really wanted to play and was close last week, but it just came back out. We were hoping that we could make it through the rest of the season. But it was a great play, big play, and I hate that happened to him. But I appreciate his effort.”

Collins, who sustained a separated shoulder against Notre Dame on Nov. 5, missed the Tigers’ previous two games before returning to action against the Gamecocks.

In the second quarter, Collins recorded a 59-yard reception from DJ Uiagalelei, tying Clemson’s longest play from scrimmage of the season, a 59-yarder from Uiagalelei to Antonio Williams at Florida State.

Uiagalelei-Williams extend Clemson’s lead

DJ Uiagalelei finds Antonio Williams in the back of the end zone to extend Clemson’s lead.

It has been an interesting first half in Death Valley as Dabo Swinney, and the Tigers lead Shane Beamer and South Carolina 23-14 in the second quarter.

Clemson starting quarterback DJ Uiagalelei had his best drive of the game as the Tigers only needed five plays to go 75 yards and a score. Wide receiver Beaux Collins showed up for his quarterback, running a nice route; Collins created space and broke off a 59-yard play.

Collins’ big play set up a DJ Uiagalelei touchdown pass to standout freshman Antonio Williams on an eleven-yard strike in the back of the end zone. It was a great drive for Swinney and the Tigers.

Five Clemson players to keep an eye on against South Carolina

Clemson will play South Carolina for the 119th time in history on Saturday, and certain players will be under the spotlight.

For the 119th time in history, Clemson and South Carolina will square off on the football field this Saturday at noon.

With a seven-game win streak against the Gamecocks on the line this week, Clemson (10-1) enters Saturday with a 72-42-4 record vs. the in-state rival.

While the Tigers are coming off a dominant 40-10 victory over Miami last week, South Carolina (7-4) is as hot as a team can be right now after it won 63-38 over Tennessee.

Rivalry week is unlike any other time in college football, as teams across the nation battle it out in highly emotional games.

Still, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney wants his team to stay composed for a game with such high stakes.

“You got to stay focused on those (fundamentals) in games like this and not get distracted by all the pomp and circumstance that comes along with it,” Swinney said on Tuesday. “At the end of the day, it’s a football game, and the most fired-up team isn’t going to win — it’s the team that executes the best.”

That said, here are five Tigers to keep an eye on against the Gamecocks.

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said earlier this week that Beaux Collins is “going to be ready to roll” on Saturday against South Carolina after missing the last two games with a shoulder injury.

Swinney held his weekly Wednesday evening post-practice media availability via Zoom and gave the latest update on Collins ahead of his return to action this week.

Swinney was asked how Collins has looked in practice and how the sophomore wide receiver’s shoulder is looking from Swinney’s point of view.

“Been great. Had a great week,” Swinney said.

Collins, who sustained a separated shoulder against Notre Dame on Nov. 5, had been day to day leading up to last Saturday’s game against Miami before ultimately sitting out of the Tigers’ 40-10 win over the Hurricanes at Death Valley.

“He was close last week, so we just held him,” Swinney said Wednesday. “He was really close all the way up till Friday. But he’s good. Had a good week of practice.”

Collins has 20 catches in nine games this season, third-most among the Tigers’ receivers. He leads the Tigers in yards per reception (15.4) and touchdown catches (5).

Kickoff of Saturday’s game against the Gamecocks at Death Valley is set for 12 p.m. and will be televised on ABC.

Collins has 20 catches in nine games this season, third-most among the Tigers’ receivers. He leads the Tigers in yards per reception (15.4) and touchdown catches (5).

Dabo Swinney held his weekly post-practice media availability via Zoom on Wednesday evening and gave the latest on a couple of significant players who have been dealing with injuries.

Swinney said sophomore wide receiver Beaux Collins and junior linebacker Trenton Simpson are still day-to-day, but Clemson’s head coach is hopeful they’ll be able to play in Saturday’s game against Miami.

“He and Beaux are both, as we said the other day, kind of day-to-day, working back into practice,” Swinney said. “I think both of those guys have a chance. So, we’re hopeful.”

Simpson was held out of the Louisville game last Saturday with an ankle injury. Swinney said on Tuesday that Collins, who missed the Louisville game with a separated shoulder, returned to practice on Monday.
