Another 49ers assistant to interview for promotion with another team

The #49ers have another assistant who could leave for a promotion with another team:

Another strong year for the 49ers makes their coaching staff a popular one for teams to explore in their search for coaches. Defensive coordinator Steve Wilks has received a couple interview requests for head coaching gigs, and now passing game specialist Klint Kubiak is a candidate for the Chicago Bears offensive coordinator job according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.

Kubiak, 36, joined the 49ers’ staff this offseason following the exit of Bobby Slowik, who became DeMeco Ryans’ offensive coordinator in Houston. Before landing in San Francisco, Kubiak broke into the NFL with the Denver Broncos in 2016 as an offensive assistant under his dad, Gary Kubiak.

He was also a quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator for the Vikings before returning to the Broncos in 2022 as a passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

While the opening isn’t a head coach job, it would be considered a promotion for Kubiak not only in title, but he’d also get an opportunity to call plays – something he would not get a chance to do under 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Are the Bears showing interest in trading for Commanders DE Chase Young?

With the NFL trade deadline looming, there are rumors swirling that the Bears are interested in Commanders DE Chase Young.

The NFL trade deadline is fast approaching this Tuesday, where many expect the Chicago Bears to “stand pat” after being quite active last year.

But it sounds like general manager Ryan Poles might be zeroing in on some pass rush help.

According to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, there are rumors swirling around the league that link the Bears to Commanders defensive end Chase Young.

To make things more interesting, Bleacher Report’s Jordan Schultz is reporting that the Commanders are now “actively initiating” trade calls for teams inquiring about Young and fellow pass rusher Montez Sweat. Which means they’re no longer just listening.

On the surface, it’s not a move many would probably expect from a 2-5 team that has plenty of issues to address this offseason. But trading for Young — and subsequently signing him to an extension — would be a move for the future for this franchise.

Young, a former No. 2 pick by the Commanders, was the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2020. In 15 starts, he totaled 44 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, 12 QB hits, four forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, including one for a touchdown, and four pass breakups.

Unfortunately, the following season, he suffered a torn ACL in Week 10. But Young is finally healthy, and he’s already totaled five sacks in six games this season.

We’ll see if the Bears make a move for the young pass rusher with the NFL trade deadline just a few days away.

Eagles expected to trade Carson Wentz and Bears among teams interested

With the Eagles expected to trade Carson Wentz in the coming days, the Bears are among those teams interested.

So far, this NFL offseason has been filled with quarterback drama. From Deshaun Watson requesting a trade from the Houston Texans to Matthew Stafford and Jared Goff trading places with the Los Angeles Rams and Detroit Lions, there’s already been a ton of movement.

Now, the latest quarterback drama comes courtesy of the Philadelphia Eagles and Carson Wentz. Following Wentz’s decline in 2020, coach Doug Pederson benched him and turned to rookie Jalen Hurts. While Pederson is no longer with the Eagles, Wentz’s frustrations remain with the franchise, as he reportedly wants out of Philly.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Eagles are expected to trade Wentz in the coming days. More than that, Philadelphia is looking for something along the lines of what the Lions got for Stafford in exchange for Wentz.

Schefter also reports that the Bears and Indianapolis Colts have been among the teams interested in Wentz.

The Bears are desperate at quarterback, which has been the case for awhile. So naturally, they’re going to be mentioned and interested in every quarterback conversation.

While Wentz would be an upgrade over Mitchell Trubisky and Nick Foles, it’d be difficult to justify shelling out a package similar to what the Rams gave up for Stafford — two first-round picks and a player.

Wentz has several things working against him — his regression, injury history and a massive contract where he’s owed $25.4 million next season.

But he could have some things working in his favor, including experience running a similar offense and quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo on staff.

With Wentz expected to be traded within the coming days, stay tuned.
