Bears release veteran OL Michael Schofield

Another shocking cut for the Bears: OL Michael Schofield has been released.

The Chicago Bears are releasing veteran offensive lineman Michael Schofield, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

The move certainly comes as a shock given Schofield, a homegrown product, brought experience and depth along the offensive line. It’s also a move that seems to put an end to the report that the Bears could possibly trade Teven Jenkins, who is the presumptive starter at right guard.

Schofield signed a one-year deal with Chicago earlier this offseason, where he was competing for the starting right guard job. But he lost it to Jenkins.

The Bears are also releasing quarterback Nathan Peterman and waiving defensive end Sam Kamara, who are both candidates to return on the practice squad.

Bears are releasing preseason standout DT Trevon Coley

The Bears are releasing preseason standout DT Trevon Coley, who had 3 sacks this summer.

As the Chicago Bears continue trimming their roster to 53 players, there’s been another shocking roster cut on defense.

According to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, the Bears are releasing defensive tackle Trevon Coley.

Coley was a standout this preseason, where he was a force along the defensive line. In three preseason games, he totaled 5 tackles, including 3 for a loss, 3 sacks, and 6 quarterback hits.

Coley was a roster bubble player who appeared to have done enough to stamp his ticket to a spot on the 53-man roster. But that wasn’t the case.

The Bears are also waiving undrafted rookie running back De’Montre Tuggle, according to The Athletic‘s Kevin Fishbain. Tuggle is a candidate to return on the practice squad.

Bears are releasing DL Mario Edwards Jr.

The Bears have made their first surprising cut in releasing DL Mario Edwards, who carries a $3.9 million dead-cap hit.

The Chicago Bears are releasing defensive lineman Mario Edwards Jr., according to Pro Football Talk and NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Edwards is the first surprising cut by the Bears ahead of Tuesday’s deadline, especially his versatility to play interior or off the edge but, most importantly, considering he has a dead-cap hit of $3.9 million in 2022.

Following a career season in 2020, the Bears signed Edwards to a three-year, $11 million extension to keep him in Chicago through 2023.

In 2021, Edwards has seven tackles, including one tackle for loss, 1.5 sacks and one pass breakup in nine games.

Edwards has been sidelined this summer, which allowed other players to step up and make an impact on defense. This could be good news for some roster bubble players looking to earn a roster spot, including defensive linemen Trevon Coley and Sam Kamara.

The Bears have to trim their roster down to 53 players by Tuesday at 3 p.m. CT. Follow along with Chicago’s roster cuts:

Bears waive 3 undrafted rookies ahead of Tuesday’s deadline

The Bears waived UDFAs WR Kevin Shaa, S Jon Alexander and OL Corey Dublin. Their roster now stands at 76 players ahead of Tuesday’s deadline.

The Chicago Bears are starting to trim their roster down to 53 players ahead of Tuesday’s deadline.

The Bears announced that they’ve waived three undrafted rookies in wide receiver Kevin Shaa, center Corey Dublin and safety Jon Alexander.

Shaa signed with the Bears as an undrafted rookie out of Liberty. In three preseason contests with Chicago, Shaa had three catches for 42 yards, along with 1 rush for -1 yards.

Dublin, an undrafted rookie out of Tulane, joined Chicago with versatility along the offensive line at guard and center. He had a minicamp tryout with the Bears back in May before signing with the Bears ahead of the preseason.

Alexander signed as an undrafted rookie with Chicago this spring and was waived earlier this month. He soon re-signed with the Bears and registered 3 tackles and 1 QB hit in the preseason.

Chicago previously waived undrafted rookie offensive lineman Jean Delance with a non-football injury designation on Sunday.

Bears roster cuts: Tracking the path to 53 players

With the final roster deadline looming, we’re tracking the Bears’ cuts as they trim the roster to 53 players by Tuesday at 3 p.m. CT.

With the preseason in the books, the final round of roster cuts are upon us, where the Chicago Bears have to trim their roster from 80 to 53 players before 3 p.m. CT on Tuesday.

There are a handful of players who have made a case for a roster spot, but unfortunately they won’t all make the cut. After forming the 53-man roster, Chicago will start putting together their practice squad, which should feature some of those names who just missed the cut.

It’s worth noting that players like wide receiver N’Keal Harry must start the year on the 53-man roster in order to be eligible to return at some point this season, which will be reflected in the roster cuts.

We’re tracking the Bears’ roster cuts as they happen before Tuesday’s deadline:

36 players who are locks for the Bears’ 53-man roster

As the final cuts deadline looms this Tuesday, here’s our prediction for the Bears players who are considered roster locks.

The Chicago Bears wrapped their preseason with a 21-20 win over the Cleveland Browns. But now is when the real work begins for the Bears, who have to trim their roster from 80 to 53 players by 3 p.m. CT on Tuesday, which means there are going to be some tough cuts.

After looking at some of the players likely to get the axe before Tuesday’s deadline, here are the 36 players who are locks for the Bears’ roster:

8 Bears bubble players who have earned a roster spot

Not everyone can stick on the Bears final roster, but here are eight players we believe made a great case following the preseason.

The regular season is just days away for the Chicago Bears now that both training camp and the preseason have concluded. But before they take the field against the San Francisco 49ers in week one, general manager Ryan Poles and head coach Matt Eberflus must trim the roster down from 80 players to 53. This means plenty of tough decisions will be made regarding bubble players who have given everything they have since training camp began in late July.

Cutting 27 players isn’t easy for an NFL general manager and while some are easy to spot, it also becomes clear as to who has earned a place on the team. Here are eight players we believe have made a great case to stick on the Bears final roster.

Predicting 27 Bears players who will be cut ahead of Tuesday’s deadline

As the final cuts deadline looms this Tuesday, here’s our prediction for the 27 Bears players who will be cut.

The Chicago Bears wrapped their preseason with a 21-20 win over the Cleveland Browns. But now is when the real work begins for the Bears, who have to trim their roster from 80 to 53 players by 3 p.m. CT on Tuesday, which means there are going to be some tough cuts.

After making our final 53-man roster projection, here’s our prediction for which 27 players will be cut this week ahead of Tuesday’s deadline:

Bears’ 53-man roster projection ahead of final cuts

Following the final preseason game, we’re taking one last crack at predicting the Bears’ 53-man roster.

The Chicago Bears defeated the Cleveland Browns 21-20 in their third preseason game, where some players made a strong push for roster spots ahead of the final round of cuts.

There were a number of standout performers during Saturday’s preseason win, but there are also a number of tough cuts on the way as general manager Ryan Poles has to trim the roster from 80 to 53 players by Tuesday at 3 p.m. CT.

Following the third preseason game, here are my final predictions for the Bears’ 53-man roster:

Bear Necessities: Dante Pettis has made his case for a roster spot

Dante Pettis had a strong preseason for the Bears, and he’s someone who has a chance to lock down one of those final roster spots.

The Chicago Bears wrapped the preseason are in the midst of making some difficult decisions as they trim their roster down to 53 players.

There are a number of roster bubble players who have made strong impressions this preseason in hopes of securing a roster spot. That includes Dante Pettis, who has taken advantage of injuries at the wide receiver position.

“It sucks when people get hurt, but it’s football,” Pettis said. “I’ve been hurt; someone else behind me has stepped up. So that’s kind of how the game goes.”

Pettis has elevated his stock with a strong preseason, including in Saturday’s finale against the Cleveland Browns. Pettis had three receptions for 37 yards and a 12-yard touchdown from quarterback Justin Fields in the left corner of the end zone. The score extended Chicago’s lead to 14-0 in the second quarter.

“It was a quick post-corner,” Pettis said. “The DB was lined up inside of me anyway, so I kind of knew that I had good leverage. I tried to take my time and make sure I wasn’t too quick. I turned around and saw the ball in the air.”

Pettis has shown his versatility on offense in the passing game and special teams as a punt returner. Usually, final roster spots come down to special teams.

“The more you can do, coaches love that,” Pettis said, “so I’m just glad that I had an opportunity to play both offense and punt return today.”
