Bears cut CB Duke Shelley, OL Zachary Thomas

The Bears are releasing CB Duke Shelley and waiving rookie OL Zachary Thomas as they work to get their roster back down to 53.

It’s been a busy day for the Chicago Bears as they rework their initial 53-man roster after being awarded a league-high six players off of waivers.

After waiving former seventh-round nose tackle Khyiris Tonga, the Bears have also parted ways with cornerback Duke Shelley and rookie offensive lineman Zachary Thomas, according to Aaron Wilson.

Tonga was waived to make way for new nose tackle Arman Watts, who was a surprise cut by the Minnesota Vikings on Tuesday. After claiming former first-round offensive lineman Alex Leatherwood, Thomas was an expected cut at offensive line. The Bears also claimed cornerback Josh Blackwell, which explains Shelley’s release.

The Bears still have three moves to make in order to get their roster down to 53 players. One of those is expected to be placing wide receiver N’Keal Harry on injured reserve, where he would have to miss the first four games of the regular season.

Chicago Bears’ 2022 practice squad tracker

We’re tracking the Bears’ practice squad additions as they’re announced.

The Chicago Bears have finalized their initial 53-man roster, which included some difficult cuts and some surprising moves.

Now, the Bears can start building their 16-man practice squad, which will likely consist of some familiar faces waived during the final roster cutdowns.

We’re tracking the Bears’ practice squad additions as they’re announced:

Report: Bears plan to bring back DT Trevon Coley on practice squad

Trevon Coley was among the surprising cuts by the Bears on Tuesday. But it sounds like he could be back on the practice squad.

The Chicago Bears have trimmed their initial roster to 53 players, which featured some tough cuts.

Among those was defensive tackle Trevon Coley, who put together a dominant preseason in Chicago. In three games, Coley totaled 3 sacks and 6 quarterback hits.

But the good news is it sounds like Coley could be making a return to the Bears.

According to Jordan Schultz, Chicago plans on bringing back Coley to their practice squad if he isn’t signed by another team.

Coley is a vested veteran, so he doesn’t hit the waiver wire, and he’s free to sign with a team as a free agent. It sounds like Coley will sign to the Bears practice squad if he doesn’t get a 53-man roster opportunity elsewhere.

The waiver claim deadline is Wednesday at 11 a.m. CT.  Those waiver claims will be announced an hour later and then teams can begin filling out their practice squads.

We took a shot at predicting Chicago’s practice squad, which included Coley:

8 recently cut players the Bears should consider adding

Here are 8 players the Bears should consider claiming or signing to help round out their 53-man roster ahead of Week 1.

Initial rosters are now set across the NFL after a whirlwind of activity took place on Tuesday. Teams needed to trim their rosters from 80 players down to 53 by the 3 p.m. CT deadline.

The Chicago Bears and general manager Ryan Poles made some difficult decisions, but have their initial roster in place as they look ahead to week one. But things can change in the NFL at the drop of a hat and it’s fair to say the Bears probably aren’t done tinkering with their team.

837 other players were recently waived or released from their respective teams over the course of the last few days, meaning plenty of talent is now available that wasn’t before. It’s very likely Poles and the Bears look into a few players to upgrade the team.

Here are eight recently waived or released players the Bears would be wise to consider, in no particular order.

Where are the Bears in the waiver wire order?

There are a slew of players on the waiver wire that might interest the Bears. So it’s good news Chicago ranks high up in the waiver order.

The Chicago Bears trimmed their roster to 53 players on Tuesday, and it’s almost time for them to start building their 16-player practice squad and potentially make some changes to their roster.

While the Bears released a handful of players, so did the rest of the NFL, which means there are a slew of players on the waiver wire that might interest the Bears, especially at areas of concern like wide receiver, offensive line and cornerback.

But the Bears can’t just go out and sign any player. They’ll need to hope that another team ahead of them in the waiver order doesn’t also want that player. But Chicago is sitting in a good position at seventh in the waiver order list.

Here’s the order of the waiver priority list, which is identical to the 2022 draft order:

1. Jacksonville Jaguars
2. Detroit Lions
3. Houston Texans
4. New York Jets
