Tennessee defensive back enters transfer portal

Tennessee defensive back enters transfer portal.

Tennessee has lost another veteran player to the NCAA transfer portal.

Defensive back Baylen Buchanan announced his intentions to transfer on Wednesday.

“First and foremost, I want to start by thanking Butch Jones and the staff of 2016 for opening the door for me here at the University of Tennessee,” said Buchanan on Twitter. “In addition, I want to thank Jeremy Pruitt for continuing to believe in me as a player and consistently pushing and challenging me to be the best that I can in all facets.

“I have learned countless lessons with him about life and the game of football I will carry with me for a lifetime.”

After signing for former UT head coach Butch Jones in 2016, Buchanan started all 12 games in 2018 — Jeremy Pruitt’s first season at Tennessee. Buchanan notched 49 tackles and four pass breakups.

Buchanan joins tight ends Austin Pope and Jordan Allen, as well as quarterback J.T. Shrout and wide receiver Brandon Johnson that have entered  into the transfer portal.

Buchanan has not played a snap since 2018, dealing with injuries throughout the past two seasons.

Baylen Buchanan ‘to sit out this season’

KNOXVILLE — Baylen Buchanan enters his redshirt senior campaign in 2020 after not playing in any games and taking a medical redshirt last season.

The Vols kicked off fall training camp Monday ahead of the upcoming season.

Third-year Tennessee head coach Jeremy Pruitt discussed Buchanan’s status for the 2020 campaign following practice.

“From a roster standpoint, Baylen Buchanan is going to sit out this season based off of a medical issue that he’s continued to work on,” Pruitt said. “He’s shown a lot of improvement there and he’s going to continue to work hard to get better there, but he’s not going to play this season.”

Buchanan has been suffering from a narrowing of his spine. Pruitt also discussed if his injury is career-ending.

“No,” Pruitt said. “First of all, I’m not the doctor, but it’s something that he’s working hard to rehab with, and he’ll continue to do that.”

Buchanan was an important veteran piece in Tennessee’s secondary in 2018, but suffered a back injury that ruled him out for the 2019 season. It is unclear if Buchanan will be able to play out his redshirt senior year, but if he is able to return it will bring back that veteran presence.

Jeremy Pruitt has been very complimentary of Buchanan at Tennessee, and he would provide a huge boost to this defense if able to return.
