Watch: Highlights of Notre Dame’s dominating win at Mississippi State

Go Irish! Survive to see Monday…

Notre Dame baseball looked elimination in the eye and didn’t blink Sunday at Mississippi State.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, the Irish scored two in their half of the inning (played as the home team) and never looked back, eventually racking up a 9-1 victory that evened the best-of-three series at one game apiece.

The Irish flashed some stellar leather, made some plays on the basepaths, and sent a couple of blasts into the left-field stands as they forced game three which will be played Monday night.

Check out the highlights of Sunday night’s game below as you get ready for Monday’s decisive game three.

Legendary college baseball coach Paul Mainieri’s career ends

A tip of the cap to a college baseball and Notre Dame legend.

One of the greatest to ever do it not just at Notre Dame but in all of college baseball has officially retired.

After stops at St. Thomas and Air Force, Mainieri took the Notre Dame job and had the Irish baseball program humming as they qualified for the NCAA baseball tournament nine times in his 12 seasons under the golden dome, including their 2002 trip to the College World Series.

Mainieri took the LSU job after the 2006 season and took the Tigers to great heights, winning the College World Series in 2009.  In his time with LSU he led the Tigers to four additional College World Series appearances and four other trips to the super regionals.

In all Mainieri went an incredible 641-283-3 in 15 years at LSU and 533-213-3 during his 12 years at Notre Dame.

LSU fell to Tennessee in the Knoxville Super Regional on Sunday which ended the season for the Tigers and Mainieri, as previously announced, officially retired after the game.

All the best in the next chapter to one of the best to ever do it in college baseball.

Brannigan’s blast was the icing on the cake for a phenomenal evening of baseball for No. 10 Notre Dame, who is looking to make their first trip to the College World Series since 2001 and their third in program history.

ESPN’s crew had a camera on the home plate umpire that gave a great view of Brannigan’s blast to left.

Watch: Lamanna’s epic bat-flip after stretching Notre Dame lead to 5

Are you a fan of bat flips?

Facing elimination and leading 3-1 on Sunday night’s game two of the Starkville Super Regional, Notre Dame’s David Lamanna stepped to the plate with two on and one out.

The catcher then crushed the Christian McLeod 1-0 offering into the left-field lounge at Dudy Noble Field to stretch the Fighting Irish lead to 6-1.

Lamanna had four home runs in 133 at-bats entering Sunday evening’s game and made his fifth blast of the campaign count as the Irish try to stave off elimination and force a decisive game three on Monday night.

Watch: Highlights of Notre Dame’s game 1 loss to Mississippi State

This one hurts…

What stings is that Notre Dame should be one win away from heading to Omaha for the College World Series right now but some shoddy play in the field Saturday helped lead to a Mississippi State comeback to take game one of the best-of-three super regional series.

The Irish led 7-3 in the fifth inning after a three-run home run by Zach Prajzner but allowed three in the bottom half of the inning and only scored once more themselves in a letdown loss.

See the highlights from game one action on Saturday below as the Irish now enter play on Sunday evening with their season on the line.

Notre Dame and Mississippi State square off for game two on Sunday at 6 p.m. ET.  An Irish win would force a decisive game three Monday night while a win by the Bulldogs would send them to the College World Series and eliminate Notre Dame.
