Shark Week means Shaq Week for the NFL sack king

Buccaneers linebacker and reigning sack king Shaq Barrett got the Shark Week treatment from the team on Instagram.

It’s Shark Week, and boy do we need some shark entertainment in our lives right now.

Buccaneers tight end Rob Gronkowski is a veteran of Shark Week, having taken part in the Discovery Channel celebration back in 2018. While Gronk is too busy at training camp this year to get his feet wet with the big fish, his new teammate, NFL sack king Shaq Barrett, got the Shark Week treatment as the team posted this Jaws-inspired picture featuring their star linebacker.

Bucs LB Shaq Barrett just got snubbed in a big way by these NFL analysts

Was Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Shaquil Barrett just snubbed in a big way by these analysts?

The NFL Honors award show will take place Saturday, Feb. 1, on the eve of Super Bowl LIV in Miami.

One of the major awards that will be handed out is for AP Defensive Player of the Year, and as Buccaneers senior writer Scott Smith wrote yesterday, Tampa Bay linebacker Shaquil Barrett is a strong candidate to take home the hardware after leading the league in sacks with 19.5.

But, over at NFL.com, where 24 analysts and writers made their selections for each award, not one had Barrett listed as their choice.

It’s shocking that not one person thought of Barrett. Chandler Jones of the Arizona Cardinals is a great player, but he finished .5 sack behind Barrett and the Cardinals went just 5-10-1, while Barrett’s Bucs went 7-9.

A First-Team All-Pro snub and now this? Just add more fuel to the fire of motivation.

Warning to the rest of the league: you don’t want to anger the guy who led the league in sacks.

Shaq Barrett on a trampoline will brighten your Wednesday

Take a look at this Instagram post from Buccaneers linebacker Shaq Barrett.

Buccaneers linebacker Shaquil Barrett had a historical season for Tampa Bay. After signing a one-year contract last offseason to join a rebuilding defense, Barrett established himself as the best defensive player of the Bucs this year, collecting 19.5 sacks and breaking the franchise’s single-season sack record.

Now, Barrett is waiting for what will likely be a big payday this offseason from the Bucs. Both sides have mutual interest in a reunion, so all the Pro Bowl linebacker has to do now is sit back and wait.

And, what better way to pass the time than playing on a trampoline with your little ones?

Take a look.

Shaq Barrett wants to stay with the Bucs, and why not?

After a record-setting performance against the Falcons in Week 17, linebacker Shaq Barrett made it clear where he wants to play in 2020.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ season ended with a Jameis Winston pick-six (surprise, surprise) in an overtime loss Sunday to the Atlanta Falcons. The Bucs finish the season at 7-9, an improvement over their 5-11 record from the past two seasons.

The Bucs now head into an offseason needing to address a number of issues, primarily, how they can retain linebacker Shaq Barrett, who finished the season with 19.5 sacks after collecting three in yesterday’s loss to the Falcons.

Barrett entered yesterday’s game with 16.5 sacks, which was tied with Warren Sapp (2000) for the single-season franchise record. His three-sack performance shattered that mark, something nobody could’ve predicted when Barrett signed with the Bucs on a one-year deal in the offseason.

Now a pending free agent, Barrett has made it clear where he wants to be next year.

Why wouldn’t Barrett want to stay in Tampa? He’s thrived under defensive coordinator Todd Bowles and has a chance to be a cornerstone of this defense alongside Devin White. Plus, Barrett has said how much he and his family hate moving.

It seems clear that the Bucs want Barrett back, too. The only question now is how much it will ultimately cost the team to keep him around for the long term.
