The Orioles made a powerful gesture on Zoom for Trey Mancini amid cancer diagnosis

A beautiful gesture from the Orioles.

The Baltimore Orioles are doing what they can to show support for Trey Mancini, who is fighting against stage 3 colon cancer, during the coronavirus pandemic. The team got together on a Zoom call, with everyone showing a sign of support for their teammate: “#F16HT.” Mancini wears No. 16, and so that has become the message of solidarity for his battle against cancer.

He made the announcement about his diagnosis on April 13, and reflected upon his experience with cancer on The Players’ Tribune. It must be agonizing for the Orioles to be making such limited contact with Mancini. But that’s also what makes this gesture so lovely.

Mancini doesn’t anticipate playing this season, if baseball comes back. But he’s looking forward to next season. Keep up the #F16HT, Trey.

Trey Mancini Opens Up About Cancer Diagnosis

Baltimore Orioles 1B/OF Trey Mancini revealed his colon cancer diagnosis that will keep him out for the 2020 baseball season.

Former Notre Dame baseball star and current Baltimore Orioles first baseman and outfielder Trey Mancini today revealed that if baseball ends up being played in 2020 he won’t be a part of it. That’s because Mancini is going through chemotherapy to fight the Stage III colon cancer he’s been dealing with.

Mancini wrote a a lengthy piece today for The Players Tribune that’s worth your time if you have a few minutes.  In it he details his spring training in which things just felt off, fighting cancer in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic and the importance of surrounding yourself with good people.  It’s all there in full-detail.

Mancini also details the six months of treatment he’ll undergo to treat and ultimately beat the cancer.

Mancini was a bright spot for an otherwise forgettable 2019 Orioles squad as he had a career best season in 2019 as he led the Orioles with 35 home runs, a .291 average, .364 on-base percentage, .535 slugging and .899 ops.

All the best to Trey during this fight.  We can’t wait for next spring training, either.

Irish in MLB: Trey Mancini Undergoes Successful Surgery

A surprise last week in MLB’s spring training came from Baltimore Orioles camp where veteran Trey Mancini left camp, taking an unexpected leave.  Today we found out why exactly the former Notre Dame baseball player had to step away from the game.

After discovering a malignant tumor during a colonoscopy last week, Mancini had successful surgery to remove the tumor today.

In a statement released by the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday, Mancini was thankful for the support from the team, fans, and supporters.

“The outpouring of love and support I have received has made an extremely tough week so much better,” Mancini said. “I have the best family, friends, fans and teammates imaginable. I am also eternally thankful for the Orioles front office, our athletic trainers and the entire medical staff for everything they have done to help me during this time. Finally, I would like to thank everyone for their prayers and kind words, which have furthered my excitement to get back to playing the game I love.”

There is no timetable set for Mancini to return to the club and with MLB suspending spring training operations as of Thursday afternoon, it’s hard to have any idea when play may resume.  The good news is Mancini was aware something was amiss and all was handled well by all parties.

Mancini played at Notre Dame from 2011-2013, hitting .297 and 28 home runs in that time.  The Orioles selected him in the eighth round of the 2013 MLB Draft.  Mancini led the Orioles in doubles, home runs, RBI, OBP, slugging percentage and total bases.

Orioles legend Cal Ripken on Lamar Jackson: ‘He’s the No. 8 in Baltimore now’

Baltimore has a new No. 8 after Orioles legend gave Ravens QB Lamar Jackson his blessing and encouragement.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably seen one of Lamar Jackson’s highlights this season. The Baltimore Ravens quarterback lit the NFL world on fire for his crazy playmaking ability on the ground and his progression as a passer through the air. In all, Jackson led Baltimore to a franchise-best 14-2 record, No. 1 seed, tons of broken records and very likely an MVP award this season to become the star of both the town and the league.

Longtime Baltimore sports fans will remember a different No. 8 drawing national attention, however. Orioles legend Cal Ripken Jr. — baseball’s iron man — has been the face of the town’s sports accomplishments in spite of the Ravens being the far better franchise over the last 24 years. But according to Ripken himself, it’s Jackson’s time now and he’s given his blessing to make Jackson Baltimore’s new poster boy.

“It’s his time, though. He is No. 8. He’s the No. 8 in Baltimore now,” Ripken told The Athletic’s Dan Connolly.

Back in July, Jackson threw out the first pitch before an Orioles home game against the Washington Nationals. Posing in front of Ripken’s statue, Jackson tweeted out thanks to the Hall of Famer for letting him wear the No. 8 jersey. After nearly two decades since Ripken last played, he was happy to just be remembered at all, much less by another superstar.

“It’s been a long time since I’ve played, so it makes me feel good. I always think of the question I got asked all the time at the end of my career: ‘When it’s all said and done, how would you like to be remembered?’ And I said, ‘Being remembered at all is pretty cool,’” Ripken said per Connolly. “That is how I felt with Lamar. To remember me and to look at me as No. 8, I thought that was pretty cool.”

There are some striking similarities between the two athletes, outside of wearing the same number. Both players had great starts to their careers, earning league-wide recognition with the Pro Bowl and All-Star nominations. Ripken won the AL MVP award at 23 years old while Jackson is a favorite to win the NFL’s MVP award after just turning 23 years old earlier in January.

But perhaps the biggest similarity is their humility, something Jackson earned specific praise for this season in the face of both highs and lows. Count Ripken among those that were amazed at Jackson’s ability to stay humble and level-headed regardless of the situation.

“He’s real. It doesn’t seem like he gets caught up in all the buzz and all that kind of stuff,” Ripken said, according to Connolly. “Sometimes things don’t go right. Sometimes some teams play better than you. And so, I always think he handles himself well. He’s humble. But I think he knows how good he is.”

Baltimore has a great history with the No. 8 and it seems like it’s just beginning for the new guy in town. Much like the rest of the town, Ripken is excited to see what Jackson can continue to do.

“I can’t wait until next year.”
