Former Seahawks quarterback BJ Daniels transitions into coaching

BJ Daniels, who last played for the XFL’s Seattle Dragons, will take over as the head coach of the Lincoln High School Trojans in Florida.

Former Seahawks quarterback BJ Daniels, most recently with the XFL’s Seattle Dragons, has decided to hang up his cleats in favor of a clipboard, officially accepting the position of head football coach at his alma mater, Lincoln High School in Tallahassee, Florida.

Daniels played his college ball at the University of South Florida before he was drafted in the seventh round of the 2013 NFL draft by the 49ers. He ended up appearing in eight NFL games in the 2015 season, two with the Texans and six with the Seahawks – all at wide receiver.

Daniels bounced around practice squads and other professional leagues after that, eventually suiting up for the XFL’s Dragons in 2020, completing 19 passes for 214 yards and a touchdown before the league shut down early thanks to COVID-19.

“With the coronavirus situation and the fact that when I was with the XFL it closed down a lot of sports, it definitely forced my hand a little bit to pursue the career and the dream that I wanted to do,” Daniels told reporters at WTXL in Tallahassee. “Coaching is that dream and that goal. This is the first step for what I want to do and that is continue to give back and encourage the young student athletes here at Lincoln High School. Just to do what I can to give all the knowledge and information I’ve accumulated over my entire career and just pass it along.”

Daniels does not have any coaching experience, but his lengthy playing career, spanning multiple leagues and positions, should allow him to succeed right away at Lincoln, where he looks forward to getting to meet the students face to face as soon as he can.

Seahawks react to former QB Tarvaris Jackson’s death on Twitter

Former teammates and coaches took to Twitter to express their condolences for the loss of quarterback Tarvaris Jackson, who died Sunday.

Former Seattle Seahawks quarterback Tarvaris Jackson passed away in a car accident on Sunday evening at age 36.

His death sparked an immediate response from former teammates and coaches on social media, as the world woke up to the news on Monday morning.

Jackson started for the Seahawks in 2011 after five years as a backup in Minnesota. He went 7-7 with 3,091 passing yards and 14 touchdowns, despite playing with a partially torn rotator cuff.

He spent the 2012 campaign with the Bills but returned in 2013, spending the next three seasons as a backup to Russell Wilson on Seattle’s Super Bowl-winning team.

In fact, Jackson is one of the last backup quarterbacks to appear in a Super Bowl game by the winning team.

Jackson, who was the quarterback’s coach at Tennessee State University at the time of his passing, will be missed by the Seattle and Minnesota communities – as well as his hometown of Alabama where he stayed local to play his college ball at Alabama State.

6 former Seahawks make Seattle Dragons 52-man roster

The Seattle Dragons will go into their first XFL season with six former Seattle Seahawks on the roster.

Football in Seattle is not over, even though the Seahawks fell to the Packers in Green Bay in the NFC Divisional Round a few weeks ago.

On February 8, one week after the Super Bowl, the XFL’s Seattle Dragons will kick off their inaugural season against the DC Defenders in Washington DC, before hosting their first home game at CenturyLink Field on February 15 at 2:00 p.m. PT. against the Tampa Bay Vipers.

While fans will immediately notice some differences in gameplay between the NFL and the XFL, namely in the pace of play and extra point rules, they may see some familiar names – at least for those who root for the Seahawks.

The Dragons released their final 52-man roster (54 if you count the two players on injured reserve) Monday morning, just 12 days before their season opener.

Headlined by receivers Keenan Reynolds and Kasen Williams, the roster features six former Seahawks and a handful of local players.

Reynolds was in training camp with the Seahawks this past season, after spending most of 2018 on the practice squad. He did not make the team out of camp this year, and because he was out of options on the practice squad he was released and found his way to the Dragons via the XFL draft.

Williams caught fire in the 2017 preseason, but was ultimately released and caught on with the Browns before fizzling out and joining the XFL.

Quarterback B.J. Daniels, cornerback Mohammed Seisay, tackle Isaiah Battle and defensive tackle Tani Tupou (who was placed on the IR) round out the former Seahawks who will suit up for the Dragons in 2020.
