49ers’ LBs can cement themselves as NFL’s best in 2022

The 49ers have the best LB in football. Do they have the best LB corps? @nicholasmcgee24 argues they do:

The 49ers have the best linebacker in football. Most observers would probably acknowledge that there is nobody better at the position than Fred Warner. Yet such is Warner’s brilliance that the overall strength of the Niners at linebacker flies somewhat under the radar.

Injuries to Warner’s running mates are a likely contributor to this. Both Dre Greenlaw and Azeez Al-Shaair have had issues staying healthy during their careers. However, when healthy, they have each performed at a very high level.

The 49ers’ overall strength at the position led Pro Football Focus’s Seth Galina to rank San Francisco’s linebackers as the best in the NFL this offseason.

They have competition from the likes of the Indianapolis Colts, the New Orleans Saints, and the Green Bay Packers. Yet if Greenlaw and Al-Shaair can remain healthy for most, if not the entirety of the season, then they and Warner can solidify themselves as the premier linebacking trio in the league.

Middle linebacker Warner’s strengths are well-documented at this point. He is the green-dot wearer on the 49er defense, possessing excellent awareness of his and his teammates’ responsibilities and how the defense should react to pre-snap changes by the offense.

That awareness extends to zone coverage, with his aptitude in that area helping make the 49ers much more difficult to pick apart when they drop into a zone, as Dak Prescott and Aaron Rodgers both found out in last season’s playoffs.

With his athleticism allowing him to match up with tight ends, running backs and often even receivers in man coverage, Warner represents the archetypal linebacker in an era of the NFL where the passing game is king. Yet his continued excellence in defending opposing aerial attacks does not come at the expense of his run defense. Warner is a force against the run who last year set a new career-high in overall tackles (137) and matched his career-high from 2019 with seven tackles for loss.

Greenlaw is penciled in as the Niners’ starter at weakside linebacker and will hope for a bounce-back year after being limited to just three regular-season games in a 2021 season in which a groin injury led him to undergo surgery.

He did feature in the Week 18 win over the Rams and the subsequent playoff campaign, displaying the sideline-to-sideline speed and violent hitting that is partially what makes him such a formidable player at the second level of the defense.

Greenlaw is also an underrated defender in pass coverage and his numbers from the small sample size of 15 regular-season targets last year are reflective of his prowess in that regard. Per Pro Football Reference, Greenlaw gave up just 4.2 yards per target while his passer rating allowed when targeted was only 47.4.

Greenlaw will hope to enjoy the same success over a full season in 2022 but may have to rotate with Al-Shaair, who filled in superbly while the former fifth-round pick was on the sideline.

While he gave up a passer rating of 101.3 on his 66 targets, Al-Shaair allowed just 6.2 yards per target, only 10 linebackers targeted at least 50 times surrendered fewer.

Al-Shaair also did an excellent job of producing splash plays. He racked up nine tackles for loss and two sacks, forced one fumble and recovered two, and registered five pass breakups and an interception.

In other words, Al-Shaair did not give up significant yardage when offenses attacked him in pass coverage and excelled at forcing opponents into negative plays.

That is a combination that should see Al-Shaair, who wore the green dot for the one game Warner missed last season, receive a high number of snaps in 2022, whether that’s in rotation with Greenlaw at WLB or as the Niners’ starting strongside linebacker on base downs.

Though nickel has replaced the traditional base defense as the personnel grouping most commonly used in the NFL, the play of the 49ers’ top three linebackers in coverage means their pass coverage may not suffer that much when teams throw against their ‘base’ look.

Warner, Greenlaw and Al-Shaair can all more than hold their own in the aspect of the game most important to the modern-day linebacker and thrive at producing plays to put offenses in negative situations.

No team in the NFL possesses such a well-rounded top three and if they can all stay healthy and deliver their best to help the defense put new starting quarterback Trey Lance in the best positions possible, their status as the best linebacking corps in the league should be firmly cemented.

49ers top-ranked LB corps may only be getting better

The #49ers LB corps was atop the @PFF rankings, and they may only be getting better.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbxacb60r3mr0ac player_id=none image=https://ninerswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The 49ers unsurprisingly landed atop Pro Football Focus’ rankings of the NFL’s best linebacker units. Fred Warner leads the way for that group, but it’s the two players alongside him that help elevate San Francisco’s LB corps above the rest of the league. Things might only be getting better for San Francisco, too.

Warner spearheads that group and may be the best off-ball linebacker in the NFL thanks to his high football IQ, athleticism and ability to control the middle of the field in coverage. He may not get discernibly better, but his dominance figures to continue as he enters his mid-20s. As long as he’s in red and gold the 49ers will have a good group of linebackers.

What’s happening on either side of him is fascinating though. Both Dre Greenlaw and Azeez Al-Shaair have emerged over the last two years as potential Pro Bowl caliber players.

In 2019 it was Greenlaw who shined with Kwon Alexander out for roughly half the year. Last season it was Al-Shaair who stepped into a larger role when Greenlaw went down with a groin injury in Week 1.

Their games are different, but they both offer the athleticism required to be an every-down linebacker in the modern NFL. They’re also in a spot to take a leap with unrestricted free agency looming for both in 2023.

Greenlaw since he landed the Will linebacker role where he’s virtually an every-down player has turned into a key cog in the 49ers’ second level. The 2019 fifth-round pick from Arkansas in limited action last year had his best season in coverage and didn’t miss a tackle from Week 18 through the postseason after missing four in his other two regular season games per PFF. Quarterbacks last season also posted a passer rating of just 60.2 when targeting Greenlaw.

When Greenlaw was out, Al-Shaair stepped in and played his first significant defensive role since joining the 49ers as an undrafted rookie in 2019. He was up-and-down all last year from play-to-play and game-to-game. The good news for Al-Shaair and the 49ers is a lot of his mistakes (including 14 missed tackles) came as a product of either inexperience or over-aggressiveness. He flies to the football and plays with a ton of energy. If he can rein that in some and turn some of those mistakes into positive reps, he’ll round out what would prove to really be the best starting LB trio in the NFL.

Azeez Al-Shaair had 2 offseason surgeries

#49ers 2021 breakout star Azeez Al-Shaair had a pair of offseason surgeries.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke to reporters Tuesday following the team’s second practice of OTAs. A pair of linebackers, Azeez Al-Shaair and Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles, were both absent from the session because of some early injury issues according to the head coach.

Al-Shaair, who broke out last season while filling in for the injured Dre Greenlaw, had knee and shoulder surgery at the end of last season. He dealt with those injuries which forced him to miss four games during the year.

In 13 games Al-Shaair still managed to stuff the stat sheet with 102 tackles, 2.0 sacks, five pass breakups, one interception, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries. He’ll be in the mix to start at the Will linebacker spot again this year.

Flannigan-Fowles is less likely to be in the hunt for regular time on defense, but the converted safety is a key special teams contributor for San Francisco. He’s dealing with knee tendonitis that the 49ers are trying to manage early in the offseason program.

Shanahan said the team is hoping both linebackers are ready to go by training camp.

LB Azeez Al-Shaair signs one-year deal with 49ers

Azeez Al-Shaair officially signed his RFA tender and will return to the #49ers for 2022.

The 49ers on Monday announced linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair signed his one-year tendered contract and will return to the club for the 2022 campaign.

Al-Shaair, an undrafted rookie in 2019, was a restricted free agent and earned a second-round tender from San Francisco. That means any team that would’ve signed him would’ve had to give the 49ers a second-round pick to do so.

Linebacker will be a fascinating position to watch this year since Al-Shaair and Dre Greenlaw will both be unrestricted free agents in the offseason. Greenlaw was very good in 2019 and 2020, but got derailed by injuries in 2021.

Greenlaw going down opened the door for Al-Shaair to take on a larger role and he took full advantage with 102 tackles, 2.0 sacks, one interception and five pass breakups in 13 games.

Fred Warner will man the Mike linebacker spot, but the Will LB who’s on the field for all three downs could be a position battle to watch in camp with Greenlaw and Al-Shaair duking it out.

Restricted free agent LB Azeez Al-Shaair gets 2nd-round tender from 49ers

The #49ers don’t really want to let restricted free agent Azeez Al-Shaair get away.

The 49ers on Tuesday made it clear they want restricted free agent Azeez Al-Shaair back in 2022. NFL Media’s Mike Garafolo reported San Francisco is placing a second-round RFA tender on Al-Shaair, which means he’ll be paid just shy of $4 million for the 2022 campaign before becoming an unrestricted free agent next year.

If a team signs Al-Shaair to an offer sheet, the 49ers will have a chance to match it. If he winds up signing with another club that team will have to send back a second-round pick.

The 2019 undrafted rookie had a breakout year in 2021 when he took on a starring role next to Fred Warner with Dre Greenlaw out for most of the season. Al-Shaair started all 13 games he played and racked up 102 tackles, nine tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks, one interception, five pass breakups, a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries.

There’s a chance the 49ers work out a long-term deal with Al-Shaair to ensure they keep the 24-year-old in the building beyond this season.

49ers injury report: Elijah Mitchell ruled out vs. Titans

The #49ers ruled out RB Elijah Mitchell for Thursday night in Tennessee.

The 49ers won’t have their leading rusher for the third consecutive week when they travel to Tennessee to face the Titans on Thursday Night Football.

Rookie running back Elijah Mitchell is still dealing with a knee injury he suffered in Week 13 and the short week between Weeks 15 and 16 weren’t enough to get Mitchell ready for Thursday’s action.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Tuesday intimated Mitchell had good progress in his recovery over the weekend, but he still didn’t practice at all during the short week.

Here’s the full status report for Week 16:

49ers injury update: LB Azeez Al-Shaair questionable to return vs. Bengals

#49ers LB Azeez Al-Shaair questionable to return vs. Bengals.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbxacb60r3mr0ac player_id=none image=https://ninerswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The 49ers announced linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair is questionable to return against the Bengals after sustaining an elbow injury late in the third quarter.

Al-Shaair appeared to go down without much contact and walked slowly off the field under his own power per reporters on site.

Even if he doesn’t return, Al-Shaair had a huge impact in Sunday’s game. He left the contest with a team-high 11 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 1.0 sacks and a pass breakup.

49ers optimistic DE Dee Ford, LB Azeez Al-Shaair will return vs. Cardinals

The #49ers had two players out of Sunday’s game because of concussions, but both are expected back Sunday vs. Arizona.

[mm-video type=video id=01fkgqrfw5kppv3kjn60 playlist_id=01eqbxacb60r3mr0ac player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fkgqrfw5kppv3kjn60/01fkgqrfw5kppv3kjn60-3ce9b72c4f388ca831ce9b0855b699e3.jpg]

The 49ers defense was shorthanded in Chicago in part because of a pair of key players sitting in concussion protocol. Defensive end Dee Ford and linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair both missed Sunday’s game, but head coach Kyle Shanahan on Monday said he doesn’t anticipate either player missing a second game.

San Francisco didn’t rule either player out in Friday’s injury report, listing both as ‘doubtful’ before downgrading them to ‘out’ Saturday.

“I am optimistic about them next week,” Shanahan told reporters on a conference call. “They were close enough that we took it all the way until Saturday. But usually when it’s not looking good on Friday, that’s why we put them down as doubtful. We held out hope that’s why he took them with us out, but still a long shot this week. Much better today and hopefully that will be cleared by Wednesday.”

Ford is second on the 49ers with 3.0 sacks this season, but they still managed to sack Bears QB Justin Fields four times without him. Defensive end Samson Ebukam saw additional work with Ford out and took advantage with his best game as a 49er and his first sack of the year.

Al-Shaair has seen an increased role since LB Dre Greenlaw went on injured reserve with a groin injury. The former undrafted free agent has acquitted himself well with more playing time. Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles got the start in his place Sunday and played well with a couple tackles and a QB pressure.

The 49ers will need as many healthy defenders as possible to pull off an upset over the Arizona Cardinals, so Ford and Al-Shaair’s returns would be welcome for San Francisco.

LB Azeez Al-Shaair should return for 49ers by season opener

The #49ers hope to get injured LB Azeez Al-Shaair back for their season opener vs. the Lions.

49ers starting Sam linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair had an injury scare early in camp when he exited practice the first week because of an issue with his knee. He avoided major damage and suffered a sprain that head coach Kyle Shanahan indicated won’t keep him out for any of the regular season.

“I think it is going a little bit faster,” Shanahan said of Al-Shaair’s recovery. “You know, we had that scare on that day of practice and I think we were looking towards Week 1, but I think it’s going a little faster than that and healing up pretty nice.”

Losing Al-Shaair for any time would’ve forced the 49ers to dig into their inexperienced LB depth. Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles and veteran James Burgess are the two likely candidates to take over should Al-Shaair be unavailable.

While he only plays roughly 30 percent of the snaps as the third linebacker who leaves the field in sub packages, he’d done a nice job after carving out a role there in 2019 as an undrafted rookie. Last year he took over the position full time and racked up 35 tackles, two pass breakups and an interception.

49ers optimistic about LB Azeez Al-Shaair after knee injury

LB Azeez Al-Shaair exited Monday’s practice with a knee injury, but the #49ers are optimistic it’s not serious.

49ers linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair exited Monday’s practice with a knee injury. Head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters after the session that the team isn’t overly concerned about the ailment following initial examination.

“We don’t know for sure. It sounded, we’re pretty optimistic on it though,” Shanahan said. “We’ve got to take him all the tests and stuff, but just the doctors feeling and everything they were pretty optimistic.”

Al-Shaair, an undrafted free agent signee in 2019, worked his way into the starting Sam linebacker role last season and doubled his snap count from his rookie campaign and looked in line to start at that spot again this season.

It’s still unclear if Al-Shaair will miss any time with this injury. San Francisco has a slew of linebackers behind him on the depth chart including Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles and Jonas Griffith who were both with the club last year. James Burgess was signed this offseason, as were undrafted rookies Elijah Sullivan and Justin Hilliard.

Al-Shaair has played in 31 games across two seasons with 10 starts. He’s tallied 53 tackles, one tackle for loss and one interception.
