ONE Championship kicked off the promotion’s 2022 schedule on Friday in Singapore, and strawweight champ [autotag]Jing Nan Xiong[/autotag] was able to retain her belt, while lightweight prospect [autotag]Saygid Izagakhmaev[/autotag] announced his arrival to the promotion in emphatic fashion.

The action took place in the featured bouts of “ONE Championship: Heavy Hitters,” which streamed on B/R Live from Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Xiong (17-2) was dominant in the main event, outstriking grappling specialist [autotag]Ayaka Miura[/autotag] (11-4) over the course of five rounds and cruising to a unanimous decision to notch the sixth consecutive defense of her strawweight belt.

Meanwhile, Khabib Nurmagomedov protege Izagakhmaev (20-2) was perhaps even more dominant in his second-round submission win over [autotag]James Nakashima[/autotag] (12-3). While Nakashima had some early moments of success on the feet, Izagakhmaev quickly settled into his own rhythm before dragging the action to the floor and scoring a second-round submission via arm-triangle choke, as well as a $50,000 bonus for his efforts.

After the win, Izagakhmaev boldly called out MMA legends Shinya Aoki and Eddie Alvarez.

Xiong (17-2) retained her women’s strawweight title with a unanimous decision over [autotag]Ayaka Miura[/autotag] (11-4) in the main event. It was Xiong’s sixth successful defense of the belt. ONE Championship: Heavy Hitters took place at Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Miura hoped to take the fight to the canvas against the champ, but Xiong’s boxing and power was too strong, as was her takedown defense en route to the decision win. The 34-year-old Chinese fighter won for the third straight time and 12th time in 13 fights. Her only loss in that stretch was when she move down 10 pounds to challenge for Angela Lee’s atomweight title and was submitted in 2019.

In other MMA action on the card, Khabib Nurmagomedov protege [autotag]Saygid Izagakhmaev[/autotag] submitted former title challenger [autotag]James Nakashima[/autotag] with an arm-triangle choke in the second round. Izagakhmaev picked up a $50,000 performance bonus from ONE after the fight.

Singaporean strawweight contender [autotag]Tiffany Teo[/autotag] returned from a 15-month layoff and forced herself back into championship contention with a stoppage win over surging Japanese contender [autotag]Ayaka Miura[/autotag] at “ONE Championship 109: King of the Jungle” on Feb. 28.

Competing on home soil at Singapore Indoor Stadium, Teo (9-1) used her striking skills to good effect as she nullified Miura’s dangerous ground game at source by walking the judoka onto her snapping jab, while punishing the Japanese contender with powerful leg kicks before eventually finishing her with strikes.

Miura (10-3) initially had success by closing the distance and taking Teo to the mat and establishing her trademark scarf hold position. But unlike in previous fights, Miura was unable to transition to a fight-ending submission and Teo eventually worked her way free.

With the action on the feet, Teo used her reach advantage to work her striking to good effect as she gradually wore down Miura over the three-round duration before securing a late TKO finish with just 15 seconds remaining.

“No Chill’s” victory in Singapore puts her right back in contention for a title fight rematch with the woman who defeated her in the inaugural ONE women’s strawweight title fight, China’s reigning champion Xiong Jing Nan, who was cageside to watch Teo’s victory in person.

ONE Championship 109 results: Yoshihiro Akiyama rolls back the years to flatten Sherif Mohamed

Asian MMA icon Yoshihiro Akiyama produced a stunning one-punch knockout to stun Sherif Mohamed at “ONE Championship 109: King of the Jungle” in Singapore.

Asian MMA legend [autotag]Yoshihiro Akiyama[/autotag] turned the tables on heavy-handed [autotag]Sherif Mohamed[/autotag] to score a stunning first-round knockout and show that at 44, he still possesses the sort of punching power that can finish a fight in an instant.

Akiyama (15-7) had to weather an early storm against Mohamed (9-6) when the Egyptian came flying out of his corner throwing bombs from the opening bell and tagged the Japanese-Korean star in the opening exchanges of their bout at “ONE Championship 109: King of the Jungle.”

Mohamed had clearly arrived in Singapore looking to overwhelm the older man, and kept the pressure on as he chased the backpedaling Akiyama around the cage, connecting with heavy punches as he dominated the first 90 seconds of the fight.

But Akiyama eventually found his feet and briefly halted Mohamed’s charge with a thumping leg kick that clearly affected his opponent. He then narrowly missed with a spectacular spinning heel kick to the head as the veteran showed his physical gifts were still very much at his disposal.

Then, with Mohamed launching into another charge, “Sexyama” struck. A perfectly-timed short left hand connected flush on the onrushing Mohamed’s chin, sending the former EFC champion crumbling down to the canvas. Akiyama moved in to land a finishing shot to his downed foe, and the fight was swiftly stopped to give the former UFC veteran a stunning knockout win – his first victory since his win over Amir Sadollah at UFC Fight Night 52 in Saitama in September 2014.

After his victory, Akiyama told ONE co-commentator Mitch Chilson, “This is the start of my martial arts journey,” before asking for the chance to fight in South Korea.

“I want a chance, if possible, in Korea,” he said.

Eto stuns Singapore’s Khan with quickfire submission

The top-billed MMA fight on the card saw Singaporean lightweight contender [autotag]Amir Khan[/autotag] submitted in swift fashion by Japanese grappler [autotag]Kimihiro Eto[/autotag] as the ONE Warrior Series graduate announced himself as a legitimate threat to the lightweight division’s best.

Khan (12-7) looked to settle into his striking early, but was quickly taken to the canvas by Eto (17-5-2), who pinned his man against the fence, then locked up a tight rear-naked choke that eventually put Khan to sleep inside the opening two minutes of the matchup.

Teo surges back into title contention at strawweight

It may have been a disappointing night for Singapore’s Khan, but it was a huge night for his compatriot as former women’s strawweight title challenger [autotag]Tiffany Teo[/autotag] stopped surging Japanese judoka [autotag]Ayaka Miura[/autotag] to position herself for a potential title rematch with the woman who beat her to win the inaugural title, China’s Xiong Jing Nan.

Xiong was an interested spectator at cageside as Teo (9-1) used her striking skills to nullify Miura’s grappling attack before eventually finishing an exhausted “Zombie” with body shots on the ground with 15 seconds remaining in the fight.

Miura (10-3) had actually started well, and appeared to be dominating the action on the mat, but Teo managed to escape before settling into her striking rhythm to pepper the Japanese contender with a constant jab and chopping leg kicks en route to a last-gasp stoppage victory.

Yoshihiro Akiyama returns at ONE Championship 109 in February

Fan favorite Japanese fighter Yoshihiro Akiyama will turn 45 in July, but he’s not done yet.

Akiyama (14-7) will return next month in a middleweight bout against [autotag]Sherif Mohamed[/autotag] (9-5) at “ONE Championship 109: King of the Jungle,” the promotion announced today. Akiyama, known as “Sexyama” to his legion of fans, arguably is the highest profile MMA fighter on a card that is topped with a trio of fights in ONE’s Super Series.

ONE Championship 109 takes place Feb. 28 at Singapore Indoor Stadium in Singapore. The card streams on the B/R Live app.

After a seven-fight run in the UFC in which he went just 2-5, but won three straight “Fight of the Night” bonuses, Akiyama stepped away from the sport after a split decision loss to Alberto Mina in late 2015. But this past June, he returned under the ONE banner to fight for the first time in nearly four years. His comeback ended in a decision loss to Agilan Thani in China, giving him six losses in his past seven fights.

Egypt’s Mohamed will be looking for his first win under the ONE banner. He has dropped three of his past four fights over a three-year stretch, and all three of those setbacks have been in ONE fights. After a win outside the promotion in August 2017, he came back to ONE on a week’s notice and lost to a decision to Thani. Then this past June, he was stopped by Rong Fan with a second-round TKO for his second straight loss.

Twenty-two-year-old Fairtex already holds ONE Championship’s atomweight muay Thai and kickboxing titles, but she now aims to make history as the organization’s first three-sport champion by capturing the MMA strap.

Her unbeaten start to life in MMA continued Friday at Bangkok’s Impact Arena, defeating Tomar via ground-and-pound TKO in front of an appreciative crowd in Thailand.

After a cagey start, Fairtex (4-0) backed Tomar (4-4) into the corner and connected with a pair of powerful roundhouse kicks to the body before the Indian changed levels and took the Thai to the mat.

Fairtex reversed position and returned to her feet but was quickly brought back to the canvas once again by another takedown. This time, however, she went on the offensive as she took Tomar’s back and attempted to lock up a rear-naked choke. Tomar rolled to her front, and Fairtex pulled her arms free, then proceeded to unload a succession of ground strikes to her helpless Indian opponent until referee Olivier Coste stepped in to end the contest at the 4:27 mark of Round 1.

After registering her fourth MMA victory, Fairtex told the crowd that she plans on working her way up until she’s ready to challenge for the atomweight title currently held by Angela Lee.

“I want to keep fighting MMA and improving my skills,” she said. “And soon, I’ll be coming for the belt!”

Magomedaliev and Zoltsetseg claim impressive finishes

The preliminary card saw a pair of first-round finishes as Russian welterweight [autotag]Raimond Magomedaliev[/autotag] and Mongolian featherweight [autotag]Shinechagtga Zoltsetseg[/autotag] registered impressive stoppages of their respective opponents.

Magomedaliev (6-1) made his presence felt early on against debuting American [autotag]Joey Pierotti[/autotag] (12-2), utilizing a succession of punishing elbows and knees from the clinch to assert his dominance in the early exchanges. The Dagestani fighter’s barrage of strikes forced the bout to be paused as medics inspected the damage sustained by Pierotti in that early salvo.

The bout eventually resumed, with Magomedaliev connecting with a huge head kick with the first strike after the restart. Pierotti initiated the clinch, and was punished with a series of knees as the Russian dominated once again. When Pierotti looked to take the fight to the ground, Magomedaliev locked up a D’Arce choke and forced the quick tap at the 3:50 mark in the opening round.

Earlier on the card, Mongolian powerhouse Zoltsetseg (6-2) completed his work in quick-fire fashion with a 55-second finish of in-form Chinese wrestler [autotag]Ma Jia Wen[/autotag] (6-3).

Zoltsetseg went to work immediately from the opening bell and closed the distance on the heavy-handed Chinese wrestler before letting fly with powerful strikes. Zoltsetseg briefly staggered Ma with a solid shot in the opening seconds then, after working another opening, he connected with a fastball right hook that connected flush to the Chinese fighter’s temple and sent him to the canvas.

In addition, the non-broadcast early prelims featured a unanimous decision win for Roel Rosauro (5-3), who edged out Indonesia’s Yohan Mulia Legowo (8-9), and a submission finish from in-form Japanese judoka Ayaka Miura (10-2), who finished Maira Mazar (6-3) via second-round Americana.
