Bengals UDFA Austin McNamara talks choosing team, punter competition

Austin McNamara on his arrival and the showdown with Brad Robbins.

Cincinnati Bengals punter Austin McNamara, believe it or not, was one of the team’s most-hyped additions this offseason.

After a few years of up and downs from the punter position, McNamara arrived via undrafted free agency despite being one of the better punters in college last year.

Now, McNamara says that his pre-draft connection with Bengals special teams coordinator Darrin Simmons played a role.

“We had that personal connection over the last month and a half before the draft and that definitely weighed in my decision,” McNamara said, according to Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com. “We talked during the back end of the draft. He’s very unique in that he’s got a punting background. That really intrigued me. My agent told me a little bit about him. I looked up some stuff about Coach Simmons and my agent told me he’s been in the game a long time. A great coach. I trusted that and I’ve seen it first-hand here.”

Now entrenched in a summer-long battle with Brad Robbins, McNamara has said that some of the drills he’s already seen this spring were impressive and that he’s excited to keep learning.

When a team hits contender status and doesn’t have much in the way of roster turnover, camp battles at spots like punter tend to get more spotlight — but Bengals fans now understand just how important that position can be.

Bengals fans will like this stat about undrafted free agent punter

The Bengals have an UDFA punter on the way with some notable stats.

As seen in the annual Cincinnati Bengals undrafted free agents tracker, punter Austin McNamara from Texas Tech makes the list.

And while undrafted free agent signings aren’t in any way official until announced by the team, McNamara would be a huge get for the Bengals.

Mcnamara’s possible arrival with the Bengals is the team’s response to Brad Robbins’ struggles last year. In fact, it was a little surprising the team didn’t use one of its 10 picks on the position during the draft itself.

Clearly, the team likely knew something outsiders didn’t about how the draft board would shake out — but it’s still surprising given some of the numbers making the rounds out there, such as this from Pro Football Focus:

It’s not often a punter challenges as the most-hyped undrafted free agent signing by a team, but Bengals fans know better than most how important the position can be, say, in key playoff situations.

Bengals find Brad Robbins some competition in undrafted free agency

The Bengals will add an undrafted free agent to compete in a punter battle this summer.

The Cincinnati Bengals didn’t use a draft pick on a punter despite having 10 selections in the 2024 NFL draft.

But perhaps that’s because they knew their guy would be there in undrafted free agency.

After the draft concluded, Texas Tech announced that Austin McNamara will head to the Bengals, meaning the team gets a punter who averaged 45.91 yards per attempt over five years.

The move clears the way for a battle with Brad Robbins this summer, whose underwhelming 2023 campaign made the position a need this draft season.

As always, undrafted signings aren’t official until the team announces them.
