‘Nobody panicked,’ Chandler Wooten describes watching Auburn’s game-winning drive

Even though the situation was tight, Auburn maintained its composure.

Auburn’s final offensive drive against Georgia State was certainly stressful.

However, the Tigers kept their cool and maintained composure on a 98-yard drive that ended in a touchdown throw from TJ Finley to Shedrick Jackson, giving Auburn the lead with less than a minute remaining.

Chandler Wooten joined Zac Blackerby on the “Locked on Auburn podcast” and described how calm he and his team were watching Auburn drive 98 yards down the field to score the go-ahead touchdown.

Wooten: I realized with two or three minutes left that this was probably the last opporunity of the game for (the offense). The defnese had just gotten another third-down stop, and I remember coming back on the sidelines and just being calm. Nobody panicked. We all had a sense of calmness on the sideline, just knowing that it was time for (the offense) to make some plays. And the drive started with a nice run, and they continued to pick u steam for there. We just watched them continue to convert third downs. We knew something special was going to happen. It was incredibly exciting to watch.

Three winners from Auburn’s win over Georgia State

Is it time to get on the TJ Finley hype train?

“Stress-free football.” Those are three words you will never hear from an Auburn fan.

The Tigers managed to mount a huge comeback in the fourth quarter on homecoming after being down 24-12 at the half against Georgia State. It was not the ideal homecoming, but it made for dramatic football. Bo Nix was benched late in the third quarter for backup QB TJ Finley. Head coach Bryan Harsin said they were willing to try everything to get back into the game.

Harsin: “We hadn’t really done anything. I made the decision to change and try to create some type of momentum… We had played every running back. We played every wide receiver. You aren’t going to change the offensive line. That was my decision.”

Here are three winners from Auburn’s dramatic win over Georgia State on Saturday.

Five takeaways from the first half of Auburn vs Georgia State: Auburn is falling apart

It was a rough first half for Auburn.

OK, so that was rough and really hard to watch.

Bo Nix and the Auburn offense looked incredibly rusty. The Tiger defense was gashed. The receivers can’t create separation consistently. Overall, just a poor showing from the Tigers. All around, my concern isn’t for Auburn in this game, but for the future. How will the Tigers handle SEC play? If they can’t establish the ground game against Georgia State (109th nationally in rushing yards allowed per game), how will they do against LSU and Georgia during the next two weeks?

Here are five takeaways from the first half against Georgia State.

Five reasons why Auburn will beat Georgia State

Here are five reasons why Auburn will beat Georgia State on Saturday.

Auburn heads into the Georgia State game with a daunting five game stretch following.

Games against LSU, Georgia, Arkansas, Ole Miss, and Texas A&M all follow this final cupcake game of the season for the Tigers. Of course, I expect the Tigers to not worry about their future schedule at all. Harsin wants this team to focus on being 1-0 this week. It’s time to get back on track after a  heartbreaking loss at Penn State last weekend. Can the Tigers put their foot back on the gas pedal against Georgia State?

Here are five reasons why Auburn will beat Georgia State on Saturday.

Auburn vs Georgia State Game Preview

Why Georgia State Will Win

Well there’s the Georgia State we were all waiting for.

Sort of.

Not being able to stop Army and getting ripped up by North Carolina was part of the deal, but at least the offense was supposed to work. Instead, the Panthers couldn’t get anything going. They stalled against the Black Knights – they never had the ball – and the passing attack didn’t do a thing against the Tar Heels.

And then the running game worked in a solid 20-9 win over Charlotte. There still isn’t enough of a passing game, but the O should provide just enough of a quick push on the ground to be a concern.

But for any of this to work, Auburn needs to have left its head back in State College or on the bus to Baton Rouge. This is a true sandwich game between Penn State and LSU, and with Georgia to come after that.

One problem …

Why Auburn Will Win

Yeah, the Georgia State running game isn’t going anywhere.

Penn State might have won, but it only ran for 84 yards with 2.5 yards per carry. Stuffing Akron and Alabama State isn’t any big whoop, but the Tiger defensive front under the new coaching staff is just that good.

QB Bo Nix has taken a step forward, America got to see just how good Tank Bigsby is – he ran for 102 yards and two scores against Penn State – and it’s all going to work against a Georgia State defense that’s not making enough big plays – at least it didn’t until it played Charlotte.

The Tiger defensive front will live behind the line.

What’s Going To Happen

Auburn might be a bit unfocused, and Georgia State has enough decent parts to at least bring a decent fight for about 20 minutes or so, but don’t expect a letdown overall.

There’s still stuff to work on after the Penn State game and with what’s coming next. The Tigers will get everything right with a big burst just before halftime, and the D will take care of everything else form there.

Does Georgia State have the ability to beat Auburn through the air?

Could the Panthers shock Auburn with an unexpected passing game?

Georgia State currently has one of the nation’s worst passing attacks, averaging 119.0 passing yards per game (121st nationally). Georgia State has elected to focus more on the run in their spread-option scheme.

Zac Blackerby of the “Locked on Auburn” podcast sat down with Ben Moore of 247 sports to talk about whether or not the Panthers have enough in the tank to expose Auburn through the air.

Here is what Ben Moore had to say about the Panthers’ passing attack.

Moore: “I think that’s the plan. That’s the biggest thing ultimately with the RPO game. You want to build on that and lull some of those safeties and linebackers in. It’s about eye discipline. (Georgia State) certainly has enough weapons to do that. Sam Pinckney was the guy that caught 44 passes last year. He’s one of the best Sun Belt receivers out there… (Georgia State) doesn’t really have any burners, in terms of wide receivers.”

‘They’re ambitious,’ Georgia State aims to knock off No. 23 Auburn

How are the Panthers approaching this Auburn game?

Georgia State is no stranger to upsetting SEC teams.

The Panthers did so back in 2019 against Tennessee in a year where the Volunteers managed to bounce back and finish the season 8-5. This season, Georgia State may be struggling in a lot of areas, but they are still scrappy and determined just like their coach Shawn Elliot, who led the charge against the Vols just two years ago.

Zac Blackerby of the “Locked on Auburn” podcast had Ben Moore of 247 sports on to talk about the Georgia State Panthers and their trajectory as the season has gotten underway.

This is what Ben Moore of 247Sports had to say about the Panthers and how they are approaching this Auburn game.

They’re coming off of a win, so there are some good vibes going on right now. This is a program that has basically played NCAA sanctioned football since 2010. If (Georgia State football) is not the fastest, it’s one of the fastest programs to go from not even having a jock strap or a locker room to playing in a bowl game… the program is as old as my seventh grader, (Georgia State) is 12 years old… they’re ambitious. They want to get to the level that teams like Auburn and Georgia and Georgia Tech are. Unfortunatley, they’re 12 right now. They’re the angry middle schooler that’s trying to get out there and knock some bigger teams off.

Kickoff time announced for Auburn vs Georgia State

Auburn announced its kickoff time for the September 25th matchup with Georgia State on Monday morning.

Auburn announced its kickoff time for the September 25th matchup with Georgia State on Monday morning.

The Tigers and Panthers will play at 3 PM CT in Jordan-Hare stadium. This will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

Auburn will come into the game having just played #10 Penn State in Happy Valley, whereas Georgia State will be coming off of a home game against the Charlotte 49ers. The Panthers (currently 0-2) will arguably be Auburn’s (currently 2-0) second-most difficult non-conference opponent of the season. The Panthers are incredibly experienced and bring back every starter from a program record-setting offense in 2020.
