Jabari Smith embraces Auburn meme culture in Instagram post

In the words of Jon Rothstein, “it spreads.”

Auburn Twitter.

What was once a place of frustration. A place where nothing was said without immediately arguing about the quarterback position. The anger and toxicity among fans has now turned towards a new target within the last few weeks.

The Twitter accounts of Auburn basketball’s opponents.

If you and your team find yourself losing to Auburn basketball (now a top five team in the country), you may comfort yourself by logging into Twitter and checking the replies to your team’s final score graphic (unless you are Murray State. Don’t do what the Racers did. Just post the final score and get it over with). Ever heard of a ratio?

Behold, the power of Auburn Twitter. We are Legion. Over five thousand replies and 365 quote tweets as opposed to the fourteen hundred likes. That my friends is what you call a ratio.

All of this to say that the culture is spreading rapidly across social media. Memes, merchandise. Even the Auburn basketball social media team is getting into it.

Now, it has spread to the players themselves. Little jokes here and there on social media, nothing too much. In his most recent post on Instagram, Auburn star Jabari Smith had an interesting location set on a thread of photos from last night’s game in Tuscaloosa. The location was set as “The Toilet,” even though the game was played in Coleman Coliseum.

It feels like the players themselves are embracing the meme culture that Auburn Twitter has become known for. Most of it is in good fun. Let’s hope this doesn’t spiral out of control.

Auburn basketball solidifies itself as a No. 1 seed in latest Bracketology

Auburn is the second best team in the field of 68, according to Joe Lunardi.

Auburn basketball is soaring to heights it hasn’t seen it a very long time.

The Tigers are coming off of a huge win on the road at No. 24 Alabama in a game where just about everything went the Crimson Tide’s way. In the end, it was Auburn’s stout defense that shut down Alabama’s attempt at a comeback.

Now, as Auburn looks ahead to playing Ole Miss, the parts of the national media that were skeptical of Bruce Pearl & Co. are starting to believe the hype surrounding the program (sorry, Jeff Goodman. The bandwagon is full). In Joe Lunardi’s latest Bracketology, Auburn is a projected one seed, as well as the second overall seed behind Baylor (who lost last night at home to No. 19 Texas Tech).

There is a legitimate argument to be made that Auburn is the best team in all of college basketball, given their record (15-1), their statistics (top 20 in both offensive and defensive efficiency according to KenPom), and their talent (Jabari Smith, Walker Kessler, and Allen Flanigan are all NBA prospects).

For a university that has been known for their prowess in college football, it’s incredibly refreshing to see the basketball program garner so much love and support from the fanbase. This feels like the golden age of Auburn basketball. Let’s try and enjoy it as long as we can.

Auburn basketball is a slight underdog vs Alabama

What do you think about the line in this game?

Auburn is walking into their biggest test of the season tonight.

The Tigers (14-1, 3-0 SEC) take on Alabama (11-4, 2-1 SEC) at 8 p.m. CST on ESPN. The Crimson Tide are on a little bit of a slide, having split their last six games evenly (3-3), but Nate Oats & Co. will be awake for the Iron Bowl of basketball later on this evening.

In fact, oddsmakers seem to favor Alabama in what should be a very competitive game.

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook

Line: Alabama (-3.5)

Over/Under: 155.5

Money Line: Auburn (+130) | Texas A&M (-160)

The Tigers have only been underdogs once this season. Auburn was a -2.5 dog to UConn back in November in the Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament, the only loss of the season so far for No. 4 Auburn.

The line for this game opened at -1.5 but has since grown, which indicates to me that Tipico knows something we don’t know. What we do know is that Bruce Pearl is 1-3 vs Nate Oats. Getting a win in Coleman Coliseum tonight would be huge for Auburn, especially thinking about the longterm SEC standings. Auburn currently holds a one game lead in first place. A win over No. 24 Alabama could be crucial down the line.

Why Alabama Will Win

How did the Crimson Tide win in a 83-64 blowout a month ago? They were red hot from the field, they got out to a hot start, outscored Auburn by 12 on the free throw line, and they were never behind.

This is the one team in the SEC that can beat the Tigers at their own game from three, leading the conference in three-pointers for the league’s best offense.

AU is just okay at defending on the perimeter, it doesn’t hit a lot of threes considering how many it takes, and the team doesn’t do enough to make the extra pass. But …

Why Auburn Will Win

Alabama doesn’t play a lick of defense.

It’s giving up an SEC-worst 78 points per game, partly because it turns the ball over way, way, way too often. Auburn might not force a ton of mistakes compared to other SEC teams, but it can do enough to occasionally slow down the Bama O.

The Tide also have to come up with the big plays on the boards with a whole lot of second-chance points. They’re active on the glass, but Auburn is almost as strong – there won’t be the huge disparity that Bama needs to have.

Auburn is the best team in the SEC on the offensive boards – it’ll get more easy points than it did in its first performance.

What’s Going To Happen

Alabama has lost three of its last four games and needed overtime to get the win over Georgia. Auburn has found its groove again on a six-game winning streak, and it’s about to go off with a huge offensive performance in what should be a high-flying, entertaining shootout.
