Keys to Auburn’s 24-10 win over Mississippi State

Here were the keys to Auburns 24-10 win over Mississippi State.

It may have taken some time but the Auburn offense finally woke up and the Tigers picked up a critical win against Mississippi State.

Auburn rode its defense and a strong fourth quarter to a 24-10 win where neither offense looked ready to play in the first half.

The win snapped a two-game losing streak and improved Auburn to 6-4 on the season.

Here were the keys to the important win.

First half analysis: Auburn 6, Mississippi State 3

Auburn has come out sluggish once again as the Tigers lead Mississippi State 6-3 at halftime.

That was anything but an inspiring first half from Auburn. There really isn’t much to say but I tried to get a few thoughts out after the first 30 minutes as the Tigers lead 6-3 over Mississippi State.

  • I’m just sick of watching this offensive line and its lack of ability to block. It is so frustrating watching this position not get any better year after year, no matter who the coach is. This happens when you ignore one of the most important positions in football in recruiting.
  • Stating that, it isn’t Bo Nix’s fault that he doesn’t stay in the pocket although listening to Jordan Rodgers you would think so. I know Rodgers has seen an Auburn game this year so it shouldn’t surprise him.
  • After watching this against a 2-6 team, is anyone really on the Gus Bus anymore? This is beyond embarrassing.
  • Hey, you think Mississippi State knows Auburn likes to run the wide receiver screen?
  • Has Seth Williams totally given up on the season? You have to wonder.
  • Sigh. Sorry, I just needed to take a minute and take a deep breath.
  • Having Auburn basketball and football on at the same time was not good for my heart or attention span. Let’s try and make sure that never happens again. Too much happening at once.
  • Tank Bigsby looks back to full health. You have to ride him in the second half. Otherwise, this offense has no chance.
  • The camera angle on Ladarius Tennison’s hit on Jo’Quavious Marks was so bad that I had no reason to believe it wasn’t targeting.
  • Gus Malzahn coming out in the visor and sweater vest while also opting to go for it on 4th-and-1? Yeah, I think he knows how important this game is to his future, if there is any, at Auburn.
  • In good news, Auburn basketball came away with an impressive victory over Memphis in Atlanta, 74-71. True freshman guard Justin Powell continues to be impressive.

Remembering Auburn’s 3-2 victory over Mississippi State

It was a defensive battle amid some offensive ineptitude as Auburn defeated Mississippi State, 3-2, in 2008.

Auburn and Mississippi State will not meet this week after the game was postponed until Dec. 12 due to a rise in COVID-19 cases within each program. Needless to say, even down few players, the game would not have matched the futility of the 2008 matchup.

We all remember it as the beginning of the end for the Tommy Tuberville era in Auburn as his hire of Tony Franklin as offensive coordinator turned out to be part of his downfall.

That was especially true on Sept. 14, 2008 as the Tigers, ranked No. 9 in the country, went into Starkville looking to make some noise. What they and the Bulldogs did in the 3-2 final was put on one of the worst football games in the history of the sport.

Let’s take a look at the numbers:

Auburn total yards: 315

Not bad until you look at the three turnovers that the Tigers had.

Mississippi State total yards: 116

Ouch.

Auburn third-down efficiency: 3-of-16

Double ouch.

Mississippi State third-down efficiency: 0-for-14

You can barely do that even if you tried.

Auburn penalties: 12 for 94 yards

Let’s just say this wasn’t the most disciplined Auburn team.

Are you a masochist and want to relive the game? Feel free.
