Auburn strikes gold, flashes by Kent State 79-56

The win was Auburn’s 56th consecutive non-conference victory at Neville Arena

The Auburn Tigers simmering start to the season continued on Wednesday night with a 23-point thumping of MAC opponent Kent State. The win was Auburn’s 56th consecutive non-conference victory at Neville Arena. The 56-game home win streak is the longest active streak in all of college basketball.

Despite the lopsided final score, this game wasn’t as much of a blowout as Bruce Pearl and his staff would have hoped coming in. The Tigers looked as if they were headed for a repeat of the 50-plus point thumping of Vermont in the home opener early, but a late first half run by the Golden Flashes saw them cut a near 30-point lead to just 14 going into the break.

Seniors VonCameron Davis (19 points) and Jalen Sullinger (16 points) continued leading a valiant charge in the second half, cutting the lead as close as two possessions before Auburn’s defense finally put it’s stamp on the game. Forwards Johni Broome and Chaney Johnson blocked the Golden Flashes charge, both figuratively and literally, with 5 combined blocks, 17 rebounds, and 36 points to help Auburn stay undefeated with another emphatic win.

Guards Denver Jones and Chad Baker-Mazara added a dozen points each to seal the deal, while freshman Tahaad Pettiford followed up his breakout 21-point breakout party with a much more tame 9 points. While the Tigers focus may have wayned a bit during the victory, Bruce Pearl’s squad ultimately got the job done and will likely continue moving up the polls ahead of their final tune up before the Maui Invitation next Monday against North Alabama.

Recap: Auburn cruises past LSU for third straight SEC win

Recap: Auburn cruises past LSU for third straight SEC win

The Auburn Tigers are a wagon.

Bruce Pearl’s squad won again on Saturday night, toppling the LSU Tigers 93-78 in a game that was never truly close.

Auburn’s defense wreaked havoc on the LSU backcourt all night, forcing Jordan Wright and company to commit 17 turnovers, 16 of which were live-ball giveaways.

Those LSU mistakes led to easy offense on the other end for Auburn. The Tigers’ 93 points were the most they had scored in conference play and third most of the season.

Guards [autotag]Chad Baker-Mazara[/autotag], [autotag]Aden Holloway[/autotag], and forward [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag] led the way in the scoring department, combining for 50 of Auburn’s 97 points in the contest.

Baker-Mazara’s 19 led all scorers. The transfer guard finished one point ahead of Broome and LSU guards Jordan Wright and Trae Hannibal.

Wright and Hannibal were both efficient for LSU in a game in which the team shot over 42% from the field and 39% from 3-point range.

LSU’s issue wasn’t putting the ball in the basket in Neville Arena. It was everything they did before shooting the basketball.

The Jungle clearly had an impact on the game tonight. Auburn’s home-court advantage has become one of the best in college basketball and should help the Tigers climb up both the AP and Coaches Polls as the season progresses.

Unfortunately for the Tigers, they’ll have to leave home on Wednesday for a contest against Vanderbilt in Nashville.

Fortunately for Auburn, Vanderbilt is one of the worst teams in the SEC.

As for LSU, the Tigers return home on Wednesday for a home matchup against a solid Ole Miss team.

Recap: Auburn blows out UNC Asheville in Rocket City Classic

The Auburn Tigers have themselves a new win streak. Auburn won its second game in a row Wednesday night, taking down UNC Asheville 87-62.

The Auburn Tigers improved to 7-2 on the young season on Wednesday, defeating 2022 NCAA Tournament team UNC Asheville by 87-62 in Huntsville, Alabama.

It was another great offensive night for the Tigers, as Auburn shot an impressive 53% from the field. [autotag]Bruce Pearl[/autotag]’s team has now scored 191 points over their last two games.

Perhaps the most reaffirming aspect of the night came in the second half, where Auburn has struggled to put the “petal to the metal” against weaker competition.

That didn’t happen tonight. The Tigers scored 48 points in the final 20 minutes, receiving major contributions from forward [autotag]Chad Baker-Mazara[/autotag] and guard [autotag]Tre Donaldson[/autotag].

Donaldson ended up leading all Auburn players in scoring with 15 points in the game. Baker-Mazara was the only other Tiger in double figures on a night where sharing was caring with the basketball.

[autotag]Aden Holloway[/autotag], [autotag]Chris Moore[/autotag], [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag], [autotag]Jaylin Williams[/autotag], [autotag]Chaney Johnson[/autotag], [autotag]Dylan Cardwell[/autotag], and [autotag]K.D Johnson[/autotag] all contributed multiple made field goals.

2022 Big South Male Athlete of the Year Drew Pember paced both teams in scoring with 23 points.

Pember is a great player who will be playing at the professional level, but his fellow Bulldogs simply weren’t good enough tonight to keep up with a consistent Auburn attack.

UNC Ashville was able to shoot a very-solid 45% from the field, but a 9/18 mark from the free throw line and 13 turnovers doomed the Big South favorites.

As long as Pember is healthy, the Bulldogs will have a chance to get back to the NCAA Tournament this season as Big South Champions.

As for Auburn, the Tigers now sit at 7-2 ahead of a huge showdown against Isiah Collier and the newly-healthy Bronny James on Sunday as USC visits Neville Arena for a noon CT tipoff.

Recap: Auburn cruises to fourth victory of season

Recap: Auburn cruises to fourth victory of season

The Auburn Tigers had a successful return to Neville Arena on Tuesday, blowing out the Alabama A&M Bulldogs by a score of 84-54.

Auburn silenced the Bulldogs early, jumping out to a 49-15 halftime lead behind the strong shooting of forward [autotag]Jaylin Williams[/autotag] and guards [autotag]Tre Donaldson[/autotag] and [autotag]Aden Holloway[/autotag].

The Tigers ended up losing the second half of the game, but their lead never got lower than 25 points.

Junior guard Eric Lee led the way for Alabama A&M in the blowout loss, notching 10 points on 4/7 from the field.

Lee also added 2 rebounds and a steal in the game.

As for the Tigers, it was guard Chaney Johnson who paced the scoring attack. The transfer was given extra minutes in the blowout and made the most of them, collecting 15 points and 4 rebounds on 6/8 shooting.

[autotag]Aden Holloway[/autotag], [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag], and [autotag]Jaylin Williams[/autotag] were the only other Tigers in double figures, with 13, 10, and 10 points, respectively.

Forward [autotag]Chad Baker-Mazara[/autotag] has shown an early knack for filling up the stat sheet, and he played arguably his best game of the season on Tuesday.

The junior led all players in assists with 6, contributed 6 points, and brought in 4 rebounds. He also added a steal.

Bruce Pearl’s team heads to the Thanksgiving break 4-1 and returns to action a week from tomorrow, when they’ll host Virginia Tech in the SEC/ACC Challenge at Neville Arena.

Recap: Auburn blows out Notre Dame in Legends Classic

The Auburn Tigers played their best game of the young season on Thursday Night, defeating Notre Dame 83-59 in the Legends Classic.

Auburn Basketball is one win away from adding to its trophy case.

The Tigers blew the roof off of the Barclays Center on Thursday Night, cruising past ACC opponent Notre Dame 83-59

Auburn was incredible on the offensive end in this one, shooting 54% from the field and 45% from the 3-point line.

Freshmen [autotag]Aden Holloway[/autotag] was again the star, scoring 15 points while also dishing out 4 assists. He turned the ball over just once.

Forward [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag] has become “Mr. Reliable” for head coach Bruce Pearl. The junior crossed the 15-point plateau for the third straight time this season, finishing with 15 points on the dot in this one.

Broome did miss his third straight double-double of the season, but made up for it by dishing out a season-high 4 dimes.

Forwards [autotag]Jaylin Williams[/autotag] and [autotag]Chris Moore[/autotag] and guard [autotag]Tre Donaldson[/autotag] also scored in double figures, shooting a combined 12/19 from the field.

Auburn’s offense was great in the blowout win, but the real story was the Tigers defense.

The Orange and Blue held Notre Dame to just 2/25 from the 3-point line and 34% from the field.

Fighting Irish star-freshman guard Markus Burton came into this game averaging 24 points in his collegiate career. He had just 12 on Thursday night, shooting an atrocious 4/19 in the loss.

This game showed how good this Auburn team can look when they are playing well on both ends of the floor. Results like this are great to see after the Tigers struggled on the offensive end at many points last season.

[autotag]Bruce Pearl[/autotag] has a chance to lead his team to its first trophy of the season on Friday, when Auburn takes on the St. Bonaventure Bonnies in the Championship game of the Legends Classic.

The Tigers should be favored.

SEC increases penalties for storming the field, court

The winning school will now directly pay the lsoing school.

The biggest news to come out of the SEC spring meetings is that the conference will have an eight-game conference schedule in 2024 instead of a nine-game schedule but it is not the only significant news.

The conference presidents also voted Thursday to increase the fines for fans storming the field or court and added new policies to help protect the players.

The winning team will now be fined $100,000 for their first offense, $250,000 for a second offense and $500,000 for a third offense and the money will go directly to the losing school. Commissioner Greg Sankey has the option to add additional fines and the count for each school has been reset with the new policies, according to Ross Dellenger of Sports Illustrated.

The schools were previously fined $50,000 for their first offense, $100,000 for their second offense and $250,000 for their third offense.

In addition to increased fines, each school has to submit a detailed field or court rush management plan to the conference by Aug. 1, as well as a communication plan that discourages fans from entering the playing surface and lays out the penalties for doing so.

The schools will also be required to have uniformed law enforcement and security around each team and officials before, during and after the game to keep fans away from them and in the event of a field storming that will create a safe zone to keep them separated. They will have access to barricades and other equipment to clear a path for them off the field or court.

The fans will be allowed onto the field without penalty once the teams and officials have left the playing area.

Best photos from Auburn’s loss to Arkansas in the SEC Tournament

The Tigers will now wait to heat their seeding in the NCAA Tournament.

The Auburn Tigers once again went one-and-done at the SEC Tournament, this time falling to the Arkansas Razorbacks 76-73 Thursday night in Nashville.

The Tigers may have lost but they showed what they are made of, erasing a 15-point deficit to take a 73-72 lead with 41 seconds to go. They were unable to hold onto the lead as Nick Smith buried a jumper to retake the lead.

Four different Tigers scored in double figures with [autotag]K.D. Johnson[/autotag] leading the way with 20 points.

The Tigers will now wait to hear their seeding in the NCAA Tournament, which will be revealed on Sunday. Here are the top photos from Auburn’s brief appearance in the SEC Tournament.

Auburn Morning Rush: Basketball routs Louisiana, Justin Jones honored

Catch up on all the news around the Plains.

What a weekend it was on the Plains.

[autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] showed just why there is so much excitement around Auburn football, successfully flipping three-star cornerback Colton Hood from Michigan State and three-star offensive lineman Tyler Johnson from Texas Tech.

The moves helped fire up the Auburn fans after the basketball suffered their first loss of the season against Memphis on Saturday.

Some of the biggest news happened off the field though, as Auburn is reportedly set to hire Ron Roberts as defensive coordinator and Philip Montgomery as offensive coordinator.

In addition to these stories, the women’s basketball team picked up yet another dominant win. This time over Louisiana 81-41 on Sunday and the football team honored walk-on Justin Jones for his hard work.

Read more about these stories in the Monday edition of the Auburn Morning Rush below.

2023 Basketball Prospects: Robert Dillingham’s Recruiting Profile

This would be a major get for Auburn.

Auburn may be getting another elite recruit.

[autotag]Robert Dillingham[/autotag] is the No. 1 point guard in the 2023 recruiting class and on Monday he included Auburn in his final four schools. The Tiger will not have to wait long to find out if he will be coming to the Plains, he is set to announce his decision on June 24.

It would come as quite a shock if the Tigers are able to land the North Carolina native. He is expected to commit to the Kentucky Wildcats. However, he has already backed off a commitment once, he was previously committed to N.C. State before reopening his commitment.

Auburn has shown what guards can do in the [autotag]Bruce Pearl[/autotag] system and the Tigers may soon be able to advertise Jabari Smith as the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA draft.

Here is a look at Dillingham’s recruiting profile.

Former Auburn star Sharife Cooper called up from G-League

Hawks make the decision to call up former Auburn guard Sharife Cooper.

On Wednesday, the Hawks called up former Auburn guard [autotag]Sharife Cooper[/autotag] according to Mike Conti..

Last season, Sharife Cooper was competing at the collegiate level. The Tigers were not surprised to see how talented Cooper was. He finished his freshman season averaging 20.2 points per game, 4.3 rebounds per game, and 8.1 assists per game. With the Tigers having a down season and being placed on probation, Cooper never showcased his skillset on the biggest stages (SEC Tournament and NCAA Tournament).

After the 2020 season ended, he entered the NBA draft. The Atlanta Hawks chose Cooper with the 48th pick in the second round. Ever since then, he has gone back and forth between the NBA Hawks’ roster to the G-League Hawks’ roster. The majority of his time thus far at the next level has been spent with the College Park Skyhawks. He has played in 22 games while averaging 17.1 points per game, 4.0 assists per game, and 7.1 assists per game.

Petre Thomas-USA TODAY Sports

On Wednesday morning, the Georgia native was promoted to the Hawks’ active roster. With just two regular-season games remaining for Atlanta, it certainly seems as if Cooper could be placed on the playoff roster. With Hawks guard Lou Williams being unable to perform at a high level, head coach Nate McMillan could definitely depend on the ex-Tigers sensation to be the backup for Trae Young.

Auburn fans should keep a close eye on how the Hawks utilize Cooper moving forward.
