Even Atari is getting in on the acquisitions game, as the retro game company announced its purchase of Nightdive Studios (thanks, GamesIndustry.biz). Nightdive made a name for itself with remasters and ports of Quake and Shadowman and will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Atari once the $10 million deal is complete at the end of April 2023.
“Night Dive and Atari have a long history together and we know that Atari shares our passion for retro games and our focus on producing high-quality new and remastered games that do justice to the original IP,” Nightdive’s Stephen Kirk and Larry Kuperman said in a statement. “As we look to grow our business and expand our capabilities, we could think of no better long-term partner than Atari.”
“Night Dive’s proven expertise and successful track record in commercializing retro IP is well-aligned with Atari’s strategy and I am confident that their combined talent, technology and IP portfolio will contribute to Atari’s future success,” Atari CEO Wade Rosen said.
Atari has been reviving its brand in recent years, albeit with mixed results. Its Atari VCS 800 console, which brought classic Atari games to modern players with a handful of improvements, met with mixed reviews. Critics panned its limited set of features, and consumers were unhappy with its high price point.
Their next console was a Lego one, a blocky recreation of the 1970s console.
Nightdive’s next project is System Shock, a “from the ground up” remake of the original sci-fi horror game set to release in May 2023.
