2023 PFL 5 fighter pay: Aspen Ladd among five six-figure earners

Check out the disclosed 2023 PFL 5 fighter pays released by the state of Georgia.

PFL returned to Atlanta this past Thursday for the second of three shows in consecutive weeks at Overtime Elite Arena.

2023 PFL 5 featured final regular season bouts at heavyweight and women’s featherweight, as well as a showcase fight. In the main event, 2022 PFL heavyweight champion [autotag]Ante Delija[/autotag] defeated former UFC fighter and Jon Jones teammate [autotag]Maurice Greene[/autotag].

Also on the card was 2022 PFL women’s lightweight champion [autotag]Larissa Pacheco[/autotag], former Bellator women’s featherweight champion [autotag]Julia Budd[/autotag], and former UFC notable [autotag]Aspen Ladd[/autotag].

MMA Junkie acquired a list of the 22 pro athletes’ disclosed payouts Sunday from the Georgia Athletic and Entertainment Commission. The amounts do not include bonuses, sponsorships, or any other discretionary payments.

Six fighters topped the list at $100,000, while all other fighters received five-figure or four-figure payouts.

2023 PFL 5 video: Aspen Ladd taps Karolina Sobek with second-round armbar

Aspen Ladd needed a finish to keep her playoff hopes alive, and found a way to get it done in the second round.

[autotag]Aspen Ladd[/autotag] is back in the win column.

On the main card of 2023 PFL 5 at Overtime Elite Arena in Atlanta, Ladd (11-4) needed to finish Karolina Sobek (4-2) if she wanted to clinch a spot in the playoffs. At 4:55 of the second round, Ladd did what was necessary to extend her season by tapping Sobek with an armbar.

It wasn’t easy for Ladd.

As soon as the fight began, Ladd darted across the cage with punches, clearly showing a sense of urgency to get a finish. However, Sobek was game for the moment as she clipped and dropped Ladd with a clean punch. Ladd rallied to get back into the fight and regained her composure. Sobek kept the pressure high and made Ladd work for everything.

As time ticked away late in the second round, Ladd’s playoff hopes became dimmer. That’s when she found the armbar she needed on the mat with just five seconds remaining in the round.

Check out video of the finish below (via Twitter):

The finish was worth five points for Ladd, and for the time being, puts her in position to reach the 2023 playoffs alongside Amber Leibrock and Marina Mokhnatkina.

Olena Kolesnyk, who beat Ladd by majority decision at 2023 PFL 2 was watching in the back. She also has five points, but has to sweat out the results of 2022 champion Larissa Pacheco vs. Leibrock later in the evening.

Aspen Ladd knows she ‘can’t BS any slow start’ vs. Karolina Sobek at 2023 PFL 5

With zero points in the women’s featherweight standings, Aspen Ladd intends on fighting with urgency in her second PFL fight of the season.

[autotag]Aspen Ladd[/autotag] is behind the 8 ball, and she knows it, which is why her mindset heading into her next fight is slightly different.

Ladd (10-4) takes on Karolina Sobek (4-1) in her second women’s featherweight bout of the season at 2023 PFL 5 on June 16 at Overtime Elite Arena in Atlanta. Both fighters enter the matchup under less-than-ideal circumstances after losing their season openers this past April at PFL 2.

Ten weeks later and with zero points in the standings, it’ll take a first-round finish worth six points for Ladd to assure herself a spot in the playoffs. A second-round finish (five points) likely would also do the trick. Winning a decision isn’t something she can afford to risk.

Pressure, you say? Ladd admits she’s feeling it, but it doesn’t bother her much.

“Definitely, especially going into this one,” Ladd told MMA Junkie Radio. “I need as many points as possible. Going into it, it’s basically trying to treat it like a 5-minute fight.”

She continued, “Any fight I’ve been in is pressure. It’s a different type of pressure with the points system and how much rides on this next one, so there’s definitely that. Can’t BS any slow start this time.”

That’s what happened in Ladd’s majority decision loss to Olena Kolesnyk. Ladd struggled in the early rounds and didn’t get going until Round 3, which she dominated. By that point, it was too little too late.

Ladd said that won’t be the case this time.

“More urgency,” Ladd said of what she needs vs. Sobek. “I started too slow. I went back and watched it, and there’s certain things that I wasn’t doing on my takedowns. I was getting in just fine, but I was transitioning out way too soon. …

“It’s all me. It’s in the head, it’s in the mindset, not overthinking things. It’s really just that – not overthinking it, just going in and performing.”

[lawrence-auto-related count=3 category=420030792]

One thing Ladd likes about matching up with Sobek is that she, too, should feel the same urgency given she also needs maximum points to advance.

“I hope so,” Ladd said. “It sucks when you have opponents that don’t necessarily want to engage. The most entertaining types of fights and most fun to be in are when you go out there and you both want it.”

The PFL stays in Las Vegas this week with the start of the women’s featherweight and heavyweight regular seasons.

PFL 2023, Week 2 takes place Friday at The Theater at Virgin Hotels in Las Vegas. The main card airs on ESPN2 following prelims on ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, 2022 women’s featherweight season winner [autotag]Larissa Pacheco[/autotag] (19-4), who upset two-time champion Kayla Harrison in November, takes on former Bellator women’s featherweight champ [autotag]Julia Budd[/autotag] (16-5). Pacheco is a heavy 7-1 favorite at the betting window. Not surprisingly, then, our 11 editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers have Pacheco as one of our three unanimous picks on the main card.

In the co-feature, 2021 heavyweight season winner [autotag]Bruno Cappelozza[/autotag] (15-6) meets [autotag]Matheus Scheffel[/autotag] (17-9) in a rematch. Scheffel outworked Cappelozza for a unanimous decision in the 2022 regular season. Cappelozza is a 2-1 favorite and the second unanimous pick at 11-0.

Also on the main card, [autotag]Aspen Ladd[/autotag] (10-3), a high-profile signing from the UFC, gets her first PFL regular season fight when she takes on [autotag]Olena Kolesnyk[/autotag] (7-5). Ladd is a -450 favorite and our third unanimous pick.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Renan Ferreira[/autotag] (9-3) meets [autotag]Rizvan Kuniev[/autotag] (12-2-1) at heavyweight, and it’s our lone contentious fight from a picks standpoint. Kuniev is a slight favorite at -175, but it’s Ferreira with the slimmest possible edge in the picks at 6-5.

In the MMA Junkie consensus picks, Pacheco (76 percent), Cappelozza (77 percent), Ladd (85 percent) and Ferreira (51 percent) are the choices.

Check out all the picks above.

Aspen Ladd would love to fight Kayla Harrison despite absence from 2023 PFL season

“The fight with Kayla has come up several times and I love the fight, I’ll take it if they give it to me. But I was not expecting her to be in the season.”

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Aspen Ladd[/autotag] is not surprised that [autotag]Kayla Harrison[/autotag] isn’t a part of the 2023 PFL season.

Ladd’s (10-3) name was linked to two-time PFL lightweight champ Harrison when she left the UFC and joined PFL this past year, but it appears she won’t get to fight her this season.

Harrison (15-1) herself was disappointed to miss out on the season, but suspects that the PFL has other plans for her.

“So, the fight with Kayla has come up several times and I love the fight, I’ll take it if they give it to me,” Ladd told reporters, including MMA Junkie, during Wednesday’s 2023 PFL 2 media day. “But I was not expecting her to be in the season, and that was something that had been discussed previously just based off on she’s at in her career and what she’s done so far.”

[lawrence-related id=2630539,2630435,2586979]

In her season opener, Ladd meets Olena Kolesnyk (7-5) at 2023 PFL 2 which takes place Friday at The Theater at Virgin Hotels in Las Vegas. The main card airs on ESPN2 following prelims on ESPN+.

“I think she’s a heavy-handed southpaw striker and she’s interesting,” Ladd said on Kolesnyk. “I had this weird inkling it was going to be her honestly because obviously I knew I was fighting at a certain date, at a certain place for quite a long time, but we didn’t know who the particular matchup was going to be.

“There’s just something in the back of my mind, that’s like ‘Eh, I bet it’s her,’ and we got the call and I wasn’t shocked. So we became aware of her tendencies, worked that into what we’re doing training wise, and just got ready.”
