Why Arkansas Will Win

Can the Arkansas offense do that again?

Just when it seemed like the team was in big, big trouble when it came to bowl eligibility, it got past the two-game losing streak with an emphatic win over Ole Miss with 335 rushing yards and KJ Jefferson hitting 77% of his passes.

Just do that again, and the already bowl eligible team will bump up its bowl slot.

Missouri’s defense might be fine, but there’s a turnover margin problem – no takeaways in the last two games – the defense gave up over 700 yards to Tennessee, and the offense has been more okay than sensational.

Can the defense hold up against everything Jefferson does? He completed 79% of his passes for 262 yards with a slew of deep shots against Mizzou – to go along with 58 rushing yards – in a 34-17 win last year.

Why Missouri Will Win

Arkansas got its big win last week at home on Senior Day to get bowl eligible. Now it’s Missouri’s turn.

It might be just 5-6 with the only decent win coming against South Carolina, but the defense hasn’t been bad against the better teams – throwing the Tennessee game aside – and the offense hasn’t been too bad at keeping things moving.

This has to be about the D, though. The line is good at getting into the backfield, there should be enough pressure on Jefferson to matter, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Can Missouri play above its head?

Four of its five wins were against air – with some due respect to Vanderbilt – and the other against South Carolina was good, but not amazing. However, Arkansas has been hit-or-miss.

A healthy Jefferson makes all the difference, and the running game that rolled against Ole Miss – Raheim Sanders ran for 232 yards and three scores – will have another strong performance.

Missouri is 0-4 when allowing more than 144 yards. Arkansas has rushed for 144 yards or more against everyone but LSU.

Why Missouri Will Win

The Tigers might have struggled over the late part of the season, but they picked a great time to come up with a terrific performance in the 73-70 SEC Tournament win over Georgia.

It was a typical Mizzou win. There were tons of rebounds, and the O hit 43% from the field, but it didn’t do any one thing at a dominant level. Georgia was right there throughout playing everyone bit as well, but Missouri made four more free throws and won the rebounding margin.

For all of the good things Arkansas does, it’s not great from three and it doesn’t force a ton of mistakes considering the pressure from its style. Mizzou has no problems mucking it up and making this a defensive fight.

Why Arkansas Will Win

The Hogs have no problems keeping up on the boards, especially on the offensive side.

This is the type of team that can get on the floor and simply outrace the Tigers. Missouri has had its moment in high-scoring shootouts, but it will want to play this in the 70s and it’ll take at least 80 to do this.

Yes, the Hogs got boat-raced 81-68 at home on January 2nd, but this is a different team now. It’s been stronger from the field lately and leads the SEC in scoring D to hold on when the O is working.

But …

What’s Going To Happen

How did Missouri win so easily in the first meeting? The defense stopped the Hogs cold both inside and out. However, the Arkansas O stepped up and forced a whole lot more easy baskets in the 86-81 overtime win in the rematch in mid-February.

The Tigers need to make this a fight, and Arkansas will turn it into a track meet.

Arkansas (3-5) vs Missouri (3-3) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Arkansas Will Win

The Arkansas passing game continues to be terrific. Considering it didn’t go anywhere over the last few seasons – the Hogs failed to hit 200 yards in the last seven games of 2019 – and even with the loss to LSU last week, the season-high 339 yards through the air are still strong.

The biggest change for Arkansas this year – besides being merely competent – is turnover margin. The Hogs were -1 in the opener against Georgia, and have been a +9 overall since then – they haven’t lost the turnover battle in any of the last seven games.

Missouri has only come up with five takeaways all year and is -4 overall. Arkansas should be at least +1.

Why Missouri Will Win

The Missouri defense continues to be terrific on third downs, leading the SEC allowing teams to convert just 36% of their chances.

This is a steady Mizzou team, but it’s not spectacular. It’ll get to 200 passing yards, the running game will struggle, and the D will get off the field – no one has converted 40% of the time on third downs over the last four games.

Arkansas might be vastly better offensively, but it’s miserable at keeping the chains moving, converting an SEC-second-worst 33% of the time and it’s last in the conference in time of possession. Mizzou should have the ball for at least 33 minutes.

What’s Going To Happen

Missouri has owned this new rivalry with four wins in a row and in six of the last seven meetings since losing the 2003 Independence Bowl.

Don’t expect fireworks, but at home, the Tigers will control the clock, keep the chains moving, and will withstand a good day from an improving Hog offense by coming up with a few late scoring drives to survive.
