That’s 10 thus far, Shooter: Arkansas takes big winning streak into SEC play after beating UNLV

Jared Wegner went yard for the eighth time and freshman Ben Bybee was sharp on the mound.

If Arkansas’ pitching throws during SEC play like it did Wednesday against UNLV, the Diamond Hogs shoudn’t have much trouble keeping up their good early-season fortune.

Arkansas will carry a 10-game winning streak into SEC play on the weekend after Wednesday’s 5-2 win over the Runnin’ Rebels. Over the last seven days worth of games, the Diamond Hogs have gone from last in the league in earned-run average to 11th.

It isn’t the place coach Dave Van Horn wants to be with his staff, but considering all the injuries they’ve suffered, it’s been a dynamite week. Ben Bybee had his turn Wednesday.

The 6-foot-6 freshman right-hander won his first career game as he threw five innings of scoreless ball. Bybee limited the Rebels to six hits and a walk and needed just 65 pitches to get through those frames.

His teammates gave him a one-run lead to work after the first as Tavian Josenbeger scored on a fielder’s choice. In the fifth, Arkansas tacked on two more runs with Jared Wegner’s two-run shot, his eighth of the season.

UNLV scored its two runs, both unearned, on a fielding error by Mason Neville in right. Arkansas pulled back two in the eighth on an RBI double by Kendall Diggs and an RBI single by Harold Coll.

Arkansas hosts Auburn for the SEC opening weekend Friday through Sunday at Baum-Walker Stadium.

Diamond Hogs keep raking, roll over Runnin’ Rebels in Game 1

Eventually Arkansas will have to pitch well to win a game. SEC play starts Friday.

Arkansas, eventually, will have to outpitch a team to get a victory this season. For now, outhitting its opponents is working out just fine, though.

The No. 7 Razorbacks rolled UNLV on Tuesday, 13-7, in a game in which Arkansas had more than 20 baserunners. The victory was the Diamond Hogs’ ninth straight ahead of Game 2 of the two-game, pre-SEC set on Wednesday.

As has been the case for much of the nine-game streak, big innings have signaled the opposition’s death knell. Arkansas had two of them Tuesday.

Kendall Diggs, Jared Wegner and Jace Bohrofen each had RBI singles in the fourth and Reese Robinett tacked on a two-run single with two outs to give the Diamond Hogs an 7-4 lead in the fame.

Two innings later, Arkansas would strike for four more run behind an RBI double from Bohrofen and a two-run double by Harold Coll. A passed ball followed to give the Razorbacks their fourth run.

Arkansas’ pitching was mediocre. Parker Coil allowed four runs 2 1/3 innings as the Hogs trailed early. His replacement, Evan Carter, gave up just a knock leading Arkansas into the fifth and picking up the win. Austin Ledbetter then gave up three runs in his 2 2/3 before Cody Adcock and Gage Wood finished things off.

The two teams are back at it 3 p.m. Wednesday from Baum-Walker Stadium. Arkansas starts SEC play Friday at Auburn.

No. 6 Arkansas baseball vs. UNLV: How to watch, stream, and listen to Game 1

The Diamond Hogs must take on the UNLV Running Rebels before the SEC season starts this weekend.

The Diamond Hogs must take on the UNLV Running Rebels before the SEC season starts this weekend.

Baum-Walker Stadium plays host for the mid-week two-game series. UNLV travels to Fayetteville with a 5-7 record, but as we’ve seen in college baseball this year, the early season records don’t matter.

The last time these two faced off was two-game series in 2014. Arkansas split the series, also capturing their first win against the program. Prior to that was three-game weekend series in 1994 with the Hogs getting swept.

After going 4-0 a week ago, the Diamond Hogs received some attention, establishing a top-ten spot in all the rankings. Will McEntire was also named SEC Pitcher of the Week.

Let’s see if they can start the week off right.
