Arkansas Gymnastics Returns to SEC Competition Friday

After an impressive showing against SEMO, No. 14 Arkansas Gymnastics returns to the SEC stage on Friday with a meet against No. 10 Kentucky.

After an impressive showing last Sunday against Southeast Missouri, No. 14 Arkansas Gymnastics is ready to return to the SEC stage on Friday with a meet against No. 10 Kentucky in Barnhill Arena.

Despite a short turnaround, head coach Jordyn Wieber says that her squad has worked hard to improve this week.

“The message is very similar week to week: How can we get a little bit better, how can we improve on half-tenths, how can we get a little more consistent?” says Wieber in a press release from Arkansas athletics. “So practice has been great and I’m really looking forward to a great match-up with Kentucky on Friday night.”

Kentucky enters the meet with a 196.925 average, with their best event being the vault, where they average 9.820 per meet. Arkansas keeps improving, as they reached their second 197 score of the season last Sunday versus Southeast Missouri. The key event for Arkansas this season has been beam, with an average of 9.794.

Arkansas faces Kentucky tonight in Barnhill Arena, first event begins at 6:45 p.m. CT.

Weekend Plans Change for Arkansas Gymnastics

Due to the snow that has impacted Northwest Arkansas, the meet with West Virginia has been canceled, per Arkansas athletics.

The No. 13 Arkansas Gymbacks were supposed to host a key meet in Barnhill Arena Friday against West Virginia, but those plans have gone out the window.

Due to the snow that has impacted Fayetteville and Northwest Arkansas, the meet has been canceled, per Arkansas athletics.

However, there is good news. Jordyn Wieber’s club will now Southeast Missouri in a meet scheduled for Sunday at 1:45 pm. The Redhawks are facing a similar issue as Arkansas, in that their quad meet originally scheduled to take place at Northern Illinois University was canceled also due to inclement weather.

Arkansas checks in a No. 13 in the latest College Gymnastics Association poll, with an average score of 196.375 per meet. Arkansas is No. 3 in the South Central Regional, behind Oklahoma and fellow SEC foe Missouri.

No. 11 Arkansas gymnast Cami Weaver will miss the rest of the season after tearing her ACL in Friday’s meet against Auburn.

The meet was the first-ever gymnastics event inside Bud Walton Arena. A school-record 10,345 people attended in the one-off event as Hogs gymnastics normally meets in Barnhill Arena. The record is the second the Gymbacks have set since Olympic gold medalist Jordyn Wieber has been coach as her home debut as coach in 2020 set the attendance record that was then broke Friday.

Weaver, a freshman from Alabama, was injured on her landing off the vault in her first-ever collegiate meet in her first-ever collegiate rotation.

“She tore her ACL, which is super unfortunate and a huge loss for us,” Wieber said. “My heart goes out to her. She’s still going to be an important team member for us. … It was just kind of a fluky vault for her and just the reality of our sport sometimes.”

Arkansas next takes the floor Friday at No. 5 LSU. The Tigers were off last week after being forced to postpone against Missouri because of COVID. Arkansas is dealing with its own such issues, too, Wieber said.

“I think every program is dealing with that a little bit right now,” Wieber said.

One winter sport at Arkansas looks dominant, anyway

Arkansas gymnastics is the best sport you’ve probably never seen in-person in Fayetteville.

Gymnastics isn’t the sport Arkansas athletics has had at the top of its interest list among fans in the wintertime for a while.

But coach Jordyn Wieber, a former Olympic champion, and the Razorbacks have been making a steady climb for the last couple years.

On Friday, the 11th-ranked Hogs beat Ohio State, 195.450 to 195.025 to earn Arkansas its first season-opening victory since 2014.

The Razorbacks beat Ohio State in each event and senior Kennedy Hambrick won the all-around title while also scoring within the top three of all four events (vault, bars, beam and floor).as stellar for a final score of 9.875. Arkansas continued to show its excellence on floor with a final mark of 49.100.

Arkansas’ next meet is Friday, January 14 against Auburn. The meet will mark the first ever gymnastics meet inside Bud Walton Arena.
