Razorbacks walk-it-off against No. 8 Georgia in front of second-largest crowd ever

The SEC’s dominance in college baseball is well-known. Over in softball, it’s almost the same.

So as Arkansas lost the series two games to one against Georgia over the weekend, there was little shame. Especially with the way things ended.

The ninth-ranked Razorbacks beat the No. 8 Bulldogs in walk-off fashion in the third game of the set on Saturday as Cylie Halvorson’s solo home run in the seventh sent the second largest crowd in Bogle Park history into a frenzy as Arkansas won, 4-3.

Halvorson’s homer was her sixth, second most on the team. And it came just one inning after Hannah Gammill hit her fifth of the year to tie things, also with a solo shot.

Georgia had plated a run in each of the first three innings against Arkansas starter Chenise Delce on the way to a 3-0 lead. Delce would give up just three more hits the rest of the way to give her hitters a chance.

The Razorbacks popped for two in the fourth on Reagan Johnson’s two-run single. After going down in order in the fifth, Gammill evened the game with her ball over the left field fence to set the stage for the final-inning dramatics.

Arkansas sits in fourth in the SEC at 9-6 in conference play. The Hogs are off the league-play bent for a while as they host Central Arkansas, Alabama-Birmingham and Texas A&M-Commerce through April 18. Arkansas is back to the SEC on Friday, April 21 when the Razorbacks travel to Kentucky for three games.

Everything Eric Musselman said after Arkansas’ huge win over Georgia

Arkansas coach Eric Musselman was a happy camper Tuesday after his Hogs rolled over Georgia.

Eric Musselman feels good about where his Arkansas basketball team is right now.

He has plenty of reason to be.

The Razorbacks rolled Georgia by the largest margin in the matchup’s history on Tuesday, 32 points, in a 97-65 win. A win, too, that kept Arkansas’ strong NCAA Tournament hopes in that state.

Musselman made a point after the game Tuesday to acknowledge where the Razorbacks’ NET ranking is. Arkansas is 15th in the country in that metric, which measures, in part, a team’s overall quality based off its strength of schedule and other factors. That slotting would yield an NCAA Tournament, especially if Arkansas wins at least one of its final three games.

But Musselman also pointed out how tough those games will be, starting with Alabama in Tuscaloosa on Saturday.

Check out everything the Hogs head man had to say below. Note: Musselman’s remarks are paraphrased.

Arkansas’ best game of the season came exactly when the Razorbacks needed it.

All of the sudden, Arkansas looks like the team they were supposed to be most of the season.

The Razorbacks won their second straight game on Tuesday night, easily handling Georgia, 97-65, to move one game above .500 in SEC play and keep their NCAA Tournament chances alive.

The game was almost never close as Arkansas opened a double-digit lead less than 10 minutes into the game. By halftime, Georgia had only three more field-goal attempts than Arkansas had makes as the Razorbacks took a 20-point lead into the break.

Ricky Council and Nick Smith Jr. led the way offensively, scoring 22 and 26 points, respectively. Arkansas ran away with the game by turning 13 Georgia turnovers into 20 points while committing just five giveaways themselves.

Next up for the Razorbacks: Saturday at Alabama.

He’s baaaack! Nick Smith Jr. explodes as Arkansas dismantles Georgia

Nick Smith Jr. showed the world why he’s so highly thought of and Arkansas reaped the benefits.

Arkansas couldn’t afford to lose Tuesday night to Georgia. Not at home. Not if the Razorbacks wanted to keep their NCAA Tournament hopes realistically alive.

That isn’t because Arkansas would off the bubble were the season to end now. But with the two best teams in the SEC next on the slate and the season finale against Kentucky, tucking back regular-season wins is paramount.

Success.

Arkansas used a 15-2 run early in the first half to break open the game early and the Hogs never really looked back on their way to a 97-65 win from Bud Walton Arena.

Georgia had no answer defensively. The Razorbacks shot 64% from the floor and turned 13 Bulldogs turnovers into 20 points. The visitors especially had no response for Nick Smith Jr.

The projected NBA lottery pick looked like one. In his second real game back – third, technically – from a right knee injury, Smith scored a career-high 26 points on 9 of 14 shooting. Ricky Council joined him with 22 points and Anthony Black chipped in another 10 points.

Kario Oquendo led Georgia with 20 points.

Arkansas has three games left in the regular season and would be in the NCAA Tournament had the season ended Tuesday. But up next is projected No. 1-seed Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
