Everything Eric Musselman said after Arkansas beat Abilene Christian

“Stunk. Stunk. Stunk,” Arkansas coach Eric Musselman said about the first half.

At this point of the season for the Arkansas basketball, wins are all that matter.

Attractiveness can go by the wayside.

Of course, beautiful basketball is often winning basketball, too, and Razorbacks coach Eric Musselman would prefer his team look sharp a bit more consistently. Doing so is about the only way Arkansas climbs back into the thick of the NCAA Tournament race.

At least Thursday night against Abilene Christian the Hogs were on the right side of things. Arkansas beat ACU, 83-73, by rallying with a big second half to overcome a seven-point halftime deficit. The victory lifted Arkansas to 5-4 in its last nine games.

Now the Razorbacks have just one final nonconference game left before SEC play starts against Auburn in January.

Here’s what Musselman had to say after Thursday night’s win.

Sleepy Hogs wake up, dismantle Abilene Christian in penultimate noncon game

Things were scary for Arkansas for about 30 minutes, but a big run lifted the Hogs to a second straight win.

Arkansas went on an 8-0 run midway through the second half to take control Thursday night and dispatch Abilene Christian, 83-73.

The game was Arkansas’ first inside Bud Walton Arena in almost two weeks. The Razorbacks entered having gone just 4-4 over their last eight games and falling out of the projections for the NCAA Tournament.

ACU led at halftime by seven points in large part because of Arkansas’ 12 first-half turnovers. Once the Hogs began taking care of the ball, though, they were too much for the visitors.

Arkansas followed the 8-0 run by making six straight field goals and built their lead to 11 points at the penultimate media timeout.

Tramon Mark led Arkansas with 25 points on 9 of 14 shooting. He was joined in double figures by Khalif Battle (18) and Keyon Menifield (11). Chandler Lawson chipped in nine points and 10 rebounds.

Arkansas has just one nonconference game remaining before Auburn visits to open SEC play. The Hogs host UNC-Wilmington on December 30.

The Razorbacks and Wildcats will meet inside Bud Walton Arena for Arkansas’ first game on their home floor in nearly two weeks. The Hogs fell to Oklahoma 79-70 in Tulsa two Saturdays ago, and then nearly squandered a 20-point lead to Lipscomb in front of a sell-out crowd in North Little Rock this past weekend.

Thursday’s game will also mark just the second time Arkansas has ever faced Abilene Christian. The two programs first met three seasons ago during the 2020-21 season. The Hogs won that game 85-72, but were without head coach [autotag]Eric Musselman[/autotag] due to Covid-19 quarantine protocols in place at the time.
