Coyotes at Devils projected goalies

Karel Vejmelka (2022-23: 18-24-6, 3.43 GAA, .899 SV%) vs. Akira Schmid (2022-23: 9-5-2, 2.13 GAA, .922 SV%)

Vejmelka faced the Devils once last season, allowing 4 goals on 26 shots on Nov. 12. The then-26-year-old struggled down the stretch, posting a subpar .876 SV% over his last 12 games.

Schmid was a revelation for New Jersey last season after appearing in just 6 games the year before. The now 23-year-old logged a .921 SV% in the playoffs. He registered a .920 mark in 49 preseason minutes.

Coyotes at Devils picks and predictions

Prediction

Coyotes 4, Devils 3

Moneyline

New Jersey took 2-of-2 from Arizona last season, but the Devils playing the back half of a double is a mitigating factor here. New Jersey’s 4-3 win Thursday came in a draining and hard-hitting grinder of a contest.

Enter a Coyotes team that added 9-year veteran F Jason Zucker (27 goals last season for the Pittsburgh Penguins) and several other solid veteran pick-ups to a group of young players that are either post-breakout or nearing that phase. Arizona is on many experts’ potential most-improved list.

Vejmelka logged impressive saves-versus-expected analytics last season, and he adds to the value here.

Consider a split play on Arizona, backing the ‘Yotes with a half-unit here and a half-unit on the puck line. TAKE ARIZONA (+200).

Puck line/Against the spread

BACK ARIZONA +1.5 (-115). New Jersey is clearly the better club, but we’re betting pricing, not prediction. Placing a half-and-half money-and-puck line play is a hedge against Arizona being perhaps a 35% win probability.

Over/Under

No lean either to either side of this figure. PASS.

Arizona Coyotes at New Jersey Devils odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Arizona Coyotes at New Jersey Devils odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Arizona Coyotes (6-6-1) and New Jersey Devils (11-3-0) meet at Prudential Center Saturday. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Coyotes vs. Devils odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Coyotes have enjoyed being back in NHL-caliber locker rooms, going a perfect 3-for-3 as they work through an insane 14-game road trip. Arizona topped the New York Islanders 2-0 at UBS Arena behind G Karel Vejmelka last time out Thursday.

The Devils have won 8 games in a row, nipping the Ottawa Senators by a 4-3 count in overtime Thursday. Each of the last 4 wins for New Jersey has been a 1-goal game. New Jersey has won each of its 8 games against Western Conference teams this season, too.

Coyotes at Devils projected goalies

Karel Vejmelka (5-3-1, 3.06 GAA, .915 SV%, 1 SO) vs. Vitek Vanecek (6-1-0, 2.33 GAA, .909 SV%, 1 SO)

Vejmelka has been in the crease for each of the 3 wins to kick off the road odyssey, including the 24-save shutout on Long Island Thursday. He has allowed 2 or fewer goals in 4 of his 5 appearances in November, going 4-0-0 with a 1.66 GAA and .950 SV% with the 1 shutout.

Vanecek left his most recent appearance against the Ottawa Senators due to a lower-body injury, but he appeared in practice Friday, and coach Lindy Ruff said he is optimistic Vanecek will play here.

The team is already missing Gs Mac Blackwood and Jonathan Bernier due to injuries. G Akira Schmid came on for the injured Vanecek against the Senators, earning his first NHL win in the 4-3 OT victory, stopping all 7 of the shots he faced. He’d get the nod if Vanecek is deemed not ready.

Coyotes at Devils picks and predictions

Prediction

Devils 3, Coyotes 2

Moneyline

The Devils (-320) will cost you over 3 times your potential return. There is some risk in playing New Jersey, mostly due to its banged-up goaltender situation. However, even if Schmid is tabbed for the start, and not Vanecek, confidence is high that New Jersey will get it done.

PASS.

Puck line/Against the spread

The COYOTES +1.5 (+105) are a solid play on the puck line. The Devils have been hot lately, but they have goalie issues, and New Jersey has won its past 4 games by just 1 goal each.

Arizona comes in on a 3-game heater, and Vejmelka has single-handedly brought this team back to .500, allowing just 3 goals on his past 93 shots.

Over/Under

UNDER 6.5 (-101) is the play here, although again, there are concerns with New Jersey’s goalie situation. Play only a half-unit here.

The Under is 5-0 in the past 5 games for the Coyotes against Eastern Conference teams, while cashing at a 4-1 clip in the past 5 against teams with a winning record.

The Devils have been cashing plenty of Overs lately, going 4-1-1 in the past 6 games overall, but the Under is 5-2-1 in the past 8 against Western Conference teams this season.
