Browns defense steps up big; Denzel Ward picks off Clayton Tune vs. Cardinals

The Browns are back in business as Denzel Ward comes up with a massive interception of Clayton Tune vs. the Cardinals

The Cleveland Browns are getting the fireworks rolling. After Deshaun Watson hit Amari Cooper for a massive gain to get them on the board first, the defense stepped up big against the Arizona Cardinals. On the next defensive possession, cornerback Denzel Ward came up with a massive interception against rookie quarterback Clayton Tune.

The vaunted Cleveland defense has made the debut of Tune extremely hard on the rookie quarterback. Through the first 25 minutes of this game, Tune sits with just 18 yards on 4-of-7 passing for the Cardinals as they sit with a 10-0 deficit.

There are not many, if any, cornerbacks playing better football than Ward is for the Browns right now. The Cleveland defense has been one of the best in the league, and the play of their Pro Bowl cornerback has been a big reason why. This interception led to a Cleveland touchdown as the Browns moved the football straight down the field.

WATCH: Deshaun Watson connects with Amari Cooper for big 59-yard gain vs. Cardinals

The big gain gets the Browns into striking distance!

The Cleveland Browns got their offense cooking on their third drive after quarterback Deshaun Watson was able to connect with Amari Cooper for a massive 59-yard gain. The Arizona Cardinals had kept everything in front of them until that point as Watson and the Browns were unable to get any movement through the air. This led to a Dustin Hopkins field goal as the Browns got on the board first in this Week 9 matchup.

Cooper has been as consistent as advertised since coming to Cleveland from Dallas two summers ago. As Watson continues to look to get his footing under him after nearly six full weeks off (outside of a few drives against the Indianapolis Colts), turning to Cooper will never be a bad idea.

Through one quarter of play, Watson is sitting at 7-of-10 passing for 102 yards. Over half of that came on this play alone. Cooper has already racked up 62 yards on two catches thus far.

Greg Newsome II highlights Browns’ inactives, Dawand Jones active vs. Cardinals

The Browns have released their inactives against the Cardinals

Coming into this Week 9 matchup, the Cleveland Browns have already ruled out cornerback Greg Newsome II, wide receiver David Bell, and defensive end Alex Wright. Offensive tackle Dawand Jones was named as questionable for the game but is officially active against the Arizona Cardinals.

Due to the injury to Bell and the trade of Donovan Peoples-Jones, the Browns have promoted James Proche II from the practice squad for this game. Fourth round rookie Isaiah McGuire is set to make his NFL debut in this game due to the injury of Wright, who has come into his own this season for Jim Schwartz and his defensive unit.

Look for third round rookie wide receiver Cedric Tillman to see a massive increase in his role as well. This is an excellent game for quarterback Deshaun Watson to get his footing underneath him, but also for the rookie class to have a breakout.

Here is the full list of inactives for Cleveland as they look to advance to 5-3 against the 1-7 Cardinals.

Browns’ 54-man roster vs. Cardinals as Deshaun Watson returns

The Browns are getting Deshaun Watson back against the Cardinals. Here are the 54 players on their roster today at home before inactives.

The Cleveland Browns are on a quest to advance to 5-3 on the season as they take on the Arizona Cardinals today. The Browns will get starting quarterback Deshaun Watson back into the starting lineup as he has missed the last five weeks (outside of one quarter against the Indianapolis Colts).

The Cardinals have had a whirlwind of a week, including trading their previous starter Josh Dobbs to the Minnesota Vikings and deciding to start fifth round rookie quarterback against the vaunted Browns’ defense. They will also miss rookie wide receiver Michael Wilson in this game with a shoulder injury.

Can the Browns rebound after a tough loss a week ago and get to 5-3 on the season? The Browns face back-to-back AFC North opponents after this week, so this matchup against Arizona could serve as a “get right” game for the team. Here is the roster, including one practice squad elevation, they will battle with today as they look to take down the 1-7 Cardinals.

Cardinals’ second-leading receiver not expected to play vs. Browns

The Cardinals will likely be without their second-leading receiver.

Week 9 of the NFL is getting ready for kickoff in Munich, Germany, but the Cleveland Browns and Arizona Cardinals are set for kickoff later this afternoon in Northeast Ohio. The Browns will be starting Deshaun Watson at quarterback, and the Cardinals will be starting rookie fifth round pick Clayton Tune. And life just got harder on the rookie quarterback as the Cardinals are expected to be without starting wide receiver Michael Wilson (according to Bleacher Report’s Jordan Schultz).

Wilson, a third round pick out of Stanford this past April, has already racked up 401 yards and two touchdowns on 25 catches this season for the Cardinals. He is the second leading receiver on the team behind former first round pick Marquise Brown.

Behind Brown now, the Cardinals are now left with Rondale Moore, Greg Dortch, and Zach Pascal at the wide receiver position. This is a tall task when going against Denzel Ward and Martin Emerson Jr.

Browns Wire Staff Predictions: Will Deshaun Watson lead Cleveland to 5-3 vs. Cardinals?

Can Deshaun Watson and the Browns advance to 5-3 on the season over the Arizona Cardinals? Here is what our Browns Wire staff thinks.

Welcome to Week 9 of the NFL season, and as the Cleveland Browns sit at 4-3 on the season, they find themselves in the heart of a playoff race. They will welcome the 1-7 Arizona Cardinals to Cleveland Browns Stadium looking to rebound from a tough loss a week ago and tack on another win to their record. This matchup will feature Deshaun Watson returning to the lineup against rookie quarterback Clayton Tune making his NFL debut.

The Browns have found some success offensively over the last three weeks without Watson, but are hoping they can hit new heights with their $230 million quarterback back under center. With Kyler Murray waiting at least another week to make his return to the field after tearing his ACL a year ago, the Browns are massive favorites in this game.

How will this matchup between the Browns and Cardinals play out? Here are our weekly Browns Wire staff predictions.

Browns elevating WR James Proche from the practice squad vs. Cardinals

The Browns have elevated one against the Cardinals

The Cleveland Browns are elevating one player from the practice squad to the active roster as they get set to take on the Arizona Cardinals at home tomorrow. Newly-signed wide receiver James Proche will get his first opportunity in a Browns’ uniform tomorrow as they look to advance to 5-3 on the season.

Proche, originally a sixth round pick of the Baltimore Ravens in 2020, was on their active roster for three seasons. He has caught 25 passes for 278 yards in three seasons in the NFL. Proche also has a ton of experience as a punt returner in the NFL, an area the Browns are looking to fill after trading away Donovan Peoples-Jones.

Wide receiver David Bell is also out in this game against the Cardinals, so the Browns are looking to fill a void left by both Peoples-Jones and the Purdue product. Rookie wideout Cedric Tillman will see a massive increase in his role this week, but Proche has the opportunity to see the field.

Browns Injury Report: Dawand Jones questionable, Greg Newsome out vs. Cardinals

And the last injury report of the week…

The Cleveland Browns started the week with a laundry list of injuries, but now enter their Week 9 game against the Arizona Cardinals in rather good health. The big news is quarterback Deshaun Watson, who was not given an injury designation and has been named the starting quarterback as the Browns return home to take on the 1-7 Cardinals. However, in some not-so-good news, cornerback Greg Newsome was ruled out and offensive tackle Dawand Jones has been listed as questionable.

Newsome will not be the only player to miss, but the only starter that will not suit up. This has become a theme throughout his collegiate and NFL career. His Northwestern colleague Cameron Mitchell will get the reps in the nickel in his absence.

Here is the full injury report of every player who was limited in practice or missed practice on Friday as the Browns get set to take on the Cardinals.

Browns Injury Report: A flurry of players return to practice on Thursday

The Browns got quite a few players back on the field for Thursday’s practice

We are now just two days away from the Week 9 matchup between the Cleveland Browns and Arizona Cardinals. And as the 4-3 Browns prepare for the -17 Cardinals, they got a flurry of players back to practice. After getting quarterback Deshaun Watson back to practice on Wednesday, they now get both of their starting offensive tackles, Jedrick Wills and Dawand Jones, back to practice on Thursday.

There is still no news on who will be starting at quarterback for either of these teams on Sunday afternoon at Cleveland Browns Stadium. While Watson has practiced for two straight days, there has been no announcement as head coach Kevin Stefanski has stated PJ Walker will once again start if Watson cannot go.

After trading Josh Dobbs to the Minnesota Vikings, the Cardinals are now stuck with their rookie quarterback Clayton Tune. While they have not ruled out Kyler Murray making his debut this week, it seems unlikely as he did not practice on Thursday.

Here is the full list of players who either did not practice or were limited in practice for the Browns on Thursday.

Deshaun Watson returns to practice as Browns prepare for Cardinals

The starting quarterback has returned to practice.

The Cleveland Browns opted not to trade for a quarterback at the NFL trade deadline. While they put out a lowball offer for Jacoby Brissett, the Browns did not seriously consider adding another piece to the room. And part of that could be because starting quarterback Deshaun Watson is returning to practice as they get ready to take on the Arizona Cardinals.

Head coach Kevin Stefanski stated that Watson will participate in practice on a limited basis as the quarterback looks to get his footing back underneath him. The 1-7 Cardinals are expected to start rookie quarterback Clayton Tune this week, and without overlooking them, this may be a great week for Watson to get back into the lineup before taking on the top-ranked defense in the Baltimore Ravens next week.

Sitting at 4-3 on the season, the Browns enter a critical three-game stretch. Getting their quarterback on the field, if he is as close to 100 percent as he can be, and playing well would give them a significant boost.
