Sophomore Arion Carter started at linebacker in Tennessee’s, 24-17, win versus Alabama on Saturday at Neyland Stadium.

The 6-foot-1, 234-pound linebacker recorded six tackles and one quarterback pressure against Alabama. Carter met with media and discussed the Vols’ defensive ability to frustrate Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe.

“We know he is a great quarterback,” Carter said. “He quarterbacks the offense at a tremendous level. We knew they started with him and we knew we had to be able to disrupt the passer to be able to go in and get him off the field on third down.”

Milroe completed 25-of-45 passing attempts for 239 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. He also recorded 11 rushing yards on 14 attempts.

Alabama was 3-of-14 on third down attempts against the Vols on Saturday.

The Third Saturday in October rivalry between Tennessee and Alabama will be renewed on Saturday in Week 8 at Neyland Stadium (3:30 p.m. EDT, ABC).

On Monday, fourth-year Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel announced redshirt senior linebacker Keenan Pili will miss the remainder of the season due to an ACL injury. Pili used in-helmet communication during the Vols’ first six games this season.

Heupel discussed who could potentially take over defensive in-helmet communication against Alabama.

“Haven’t finalized that,” Heupel said. “Could be Arion (Carter), could be (Jeremiah) Telander that takes that over.”

Carter has appeared in six games in 2024, recording 27 tackles, 4.5 tackles for a loss, one interception and four pass deflections. Telander has also appeared in six contests for the Vols this season, totaling 18 tackles, one tackle for a loss, one pass deflection and one fumble recovery.

Tennessee’s captains named for Kent State football game

Tennessee football announces game captains for Week 3 game versus Kent State.

No. 9 Tennessee (2-0) will return to Neyland Stadium on Saturday. The Vols will host Kent State (0-2) at 7:45 p.m. EDT.

SEC Network will televise the nonconference matchup. Tom Hart, Jordan Rodgers and Cole Cubelic will be on the call.

Ahead of Saturday’s game, Tennessee announced its game captains.

Redshirt senior offensive lineman Dayne Davis, sophomore linebacker Arion Carter, sophomore linebacker Jeremiah Telander and redshirt senior Matthew Salansky will serve as the Vols’ game captains against Kent State.

Vol Walk will also take place on Peyton Manning Pass at 5:30 p.m. EDT ahead of the Tennessee-Kent State game.

The 6-foot-1, 234-pound sophomore appeared in eight games and missed the final five games of the season after shoulder surgery. He recorded 17 tackles, one tackle for a loss and one pass deflection last season.

Carter met with media following Tennessee’s third practice during fall training camp on Saturday. He discussed the unit under first-year linebackers coach William Inge.

“I think it starts with him holding us accountable,” Carter said. “He is a great coach. He wants to see us be the best every single day, day in and day out. I took that to heart as far as being accountable, holding other guys accountable and then holding us accountable as a team and as a group.

“You know we have to drive the bus on defense and the team in general. I feel like just us doing (that), our IQ has skyrocketed from last year to this year. I feel like we are just taking different steps along the way. The only way from here is up.”

Freshman linebacker Arion Carter has played in five games for No. 18 Tennessee (4-1, 1-1 SEC) in 2023.

The 6-foot-1, 227-pound linebacker has recorded 13 tackles, one tackle for a loss and one pass deflection through five games.

Carter met with media during Tennessee’s off week and discussed how the game is slowing down for him.

“The game feels really good to me right now,” Carter said. “It has slowed down a lot. Along with getting more reps as a young guy coming in, I am seeing the game open up and it has slowed down tremendously for me.”

Carter came to the Vols from Smyrna High School in Smyrna, Tennessee.

Tennessee linebacker Arion Carter was named a Preseason True Freshman All-American by On3.

Carter signed with the Vols over Alabama, Ohio State and Michigan.

The 6-foot-1, 227-pound linebacker is from Smyrna High School in Smyrna, Tennessee.

Carter was the No. 125 overall prospect and No. 11 linebacker in the class of 2023. He ranked as the No. 1 linebacker and No. 2 player in Tennessee, according to On3 industry rankings.

As a senior, Carter earned Tennessee Class 6A Mr. Football and Region 6-6A Defensive MVP honors. He finished last season with 92 tackles, six tackles for a loss, three sacks, three forced fumbles and one interception.

Friday’s practice was the first in shells for Tennessee during fall training camp.

The Vols will kick off its season in 29 days on Sept. 2 versus Virginia at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee. Kickoff between Tennessee and the Cavaliers is slated for noon EDT and will be televised by ABC.

He discussed the Vols’ freshmen group’s personality on and off the field.

“I feel like everyone as a whole, we complement each other just as guys,” Carter said. “We all get along. We all have our own personalities at times. It’s just great. We get along so well. I feel like coming in, everybody in the linebacker group came in during December, we’ve gotten to know each other and we’ve kind of grow as a group.

“Just growing our brotherhood overall, we’re all like family at this point and we’re going to continue to grow and get better with each other.”

“I’m home,” Carter announced.

The 6-foot-1, 215-pound Carter is from Smyrna High School in Smyrna, Tennessee.

Heupel and the Vols offered Carter on Sept. 19.

The Vols are continuing to recruit, while preparing for their bowl game.
