Argentina goalkeeper Martinez calls Mercedes-Benz Stadium pitch a ‘disaster’

The pitch ‘felt like walking on a stage, as if it was hollow,’ according to Canada’s Kamal Miller

Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez and head coach Lionel Scaloni sharply criticized the temporary grass pitch at Mercedes-Benz Stadium following their team’s 2-0 win over Canada to kick off the Copa América.

Julián Álvarez and Lautaro Martínez scored in the second half on Thursday night in Atlanta, giving the defending champions a winning start to a special edition of the tournament in the United States.

In order to host Copa games, officials in Atlanta agreed to install a temporary grass surface at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which usually has artificial turf. That switch was made after Saturday’s MLS game between Atlanta United and Houston.

The results, according to Martínez, were far from ideal.

“The state of the pitch was a disaster,” the Aston Villa goalkeeper said. “Very bumpy. We must improve in this aspect, otherwise, Copa América will always appear at a lower level than the European Championship.”

In his post-game press conference, Scaloni echoed the words of his goalkeeper.

“Better that we won, or else it would have appeared as an excuse,” Scaloni said of the field.

“But they knew seven months ago that we’d play here and they changed the field two days ago. It’s not an excuse, but this isn’t a good field. Sincerely, the field is not apt for these players.”

“It felt like walking on a stage, as if it was hollow,” Canadian defender Kamal Miller added.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium will host just one more game in the Copa América: the U.S. men’s national team’s match against Panama on Thursday.

Prior to that game, the USMNT will also play its Copa América opener on a temporary grass surface when it faces Bolivia on Sunday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Messi Argentina retirement: Will Copa America be legend’s final tournament?

Will this be the legend’s final international tournament?

Watching Lionel Messi play for Argentina at the Copa América will cause many fans to wonder if they’re seeing the legend at his final international tournament.

Even though he’ll turn 37 at the beginning of the tournament, Messi will still be a vital figure for the Albiceleste as they aim to defend the title they won in 2021.

That trophy got a huge monkey off Messi’s back, as the superstar finally won a major senior international tournament after several close calls.

The following year, Messi led Argentina to an even bigger prize. The Albiceleste won the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, defeating France on penalties to seal Messi’s legacy as one of, if not the greatest player ever.

That World Cup was supposed to be Messi’s last, which the then-PSG star announced prior to the tournament. After leading his country to glory though, Messi appears to have changed his tune.

In an interview with InfoBae this month, Messi said he has yet to make a decision on the 2026 World Cup.

“It depends on how I feel, how I am physically and knowing whether I’m at the level to be able to compete and help my teammates,” Messi said of the tournament that will take place when he is 39 years old.

“There is still a long time until the tournament, but it goes quickly. I don’t know how I will be in that moment and if I feel I will be at the level to help my teammates.”

In an interview with TV Publica last year, Messi said that his international retirement would “logically” be coming soon.

“Honestly, I don’t know until when. I think it will happen when it has to happen,” said Messi.

“After having achieved everything recently, the only thing left to do is to enjoy. God will say when that moment will come.

“Logically, because of my age, I’m sure it will be soon. But I don’t know exactly when will be the right time. I think about the day-to-day, enjoying everything beautiful.

“We had to go through very hard times in the national team. We were fortunate enough to be World Cup and Copa América champions. It’s time to enjoy.”

At the club level, Messi said earlier this month that his current side Inter Miami would be the last team of his career.

For Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni, as long as Messi continues to make himself available, he’ll be a big part of the national team picture

“We tell him [Messi] to play for as long as he can,” Scaloni told Christian Vieri in a Twitch interview.“He has proved that he doesn’t have an end. You don’t know when he will give [it] up. It’s incredible.”

Argentina vs. Canada: Where to watch 2024 Copa America, TV channel, live stream

The Copa América begins with defending champions Argentina facing a determined underdog in Canada

Argentina will get the 2024 Copa América underway, with Lionel Messi and Co. squaring off against Canada in Atlanta on Thursday.

The defending champions will be looking to win a third straight major tournament, and are unsurprisingly among the favorites to lift yet another trophy.

Argentina won the 2021 Copa América, outlasting rivals Brazil 1-0 in a final played during the Covid-19 pandemic. The victory marked a massive moment for Messi, who had never previously lifted a major trophy with the Albiceleste.

Canada is one of the teams standing in Argentina’s way, alongside Peru and Chile in Group A.

Jesse Marsch’s side will be making its Copa América debut in this match, having never previously participated in CONMEBOL’s biggest event.

However, recent friendlies revealed that the same team capable of holding France to a scoreless draw in Bordeaux could get blown out by the Netherlands.

With newly-appointed captain Alphonso Davies leading the strongest generation of players the nation has ever produced, Canada will have to play closer to its ceiling if it’s to have any chance of starting this tournament off with a stunning result.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the match.

Now Lionel Scaloni’s men will travel to the Washington D.C. area, where they’ll face Concacaf opposition just six days before kicking off the Copa América against Canada.

Argentina has been drawn into Group A of the Copa América, and will also face Peru and Chile in the group stage.

Guatemala enters this match on the back of wins over Dominica and British Virgin Islands in 2026 World Cup qualifying last week. Los Chapines have played Argentina three times in their history, drawing one and losing two.

Messi: Inter Miami will be my last club

The Argentina superstar will turn 37 next month

Lionel Messi has said that Inter Miami will be the last club of his career.

The Argentina superstar joined the MLS side last year, and has made an enormous impact both on and off the field as he nears the one-year anniversary of his debut with the Herons.

Messi led Inter Miami to a Leagues Cup title last summer, and this year has started the season with an incredible record of 12 goals and 13 assists in just 12 MLS games.

There has been speculation over whether Messi, who turns 37 next month, would ever join another club after Inter Miami. Rumors have persisted about a return to Newell’s Old Boys, the Argentine club where he played as a child before moving to Barcelona at age 10.

But in an interview with ESPN, the superstar appeared to close the door on a move to another club after the Herons.

Asked if Inter Miami would be his last club, Messi replied: “Yes, as of today, it’s going to be my last club.”

Messi signed a two-and-a-half-year contract at Inter Miami last year, taking him through the 2025 season, with a reported option to extend for another 12 months.

On his eventual retirement, he added: “I don’t think about it. I try to enjoy everything much more. There’s less and less to go, I want to have a good time at my club and in the national team, where I have great teammates and friends. And I enjoy the little details that I know that when I don’t play anymore I will miss.”

He added: “There is always a little fear that everything will end.”

Messi has been called into Argentina’s squad for the Copa América, which begins later this month in the United States. Argentina will be looking to defend its title from 2021, which it earned by beating Brazil in the final.

The Argentina legend has said he is open to continuing his international career through the 2026 World Cup, having previously indicated that his last World Cup would be in 2022.

Argentina, of course, emerged victorious in 2022, defeating France in the final as Messi lifted his first World Cup title.

Argentina shares list of violent fans with U.S. government ahead of Copa America

The list of banned fans has around 15,000 names

Argentina’s government has shared a list of fans it has deemed to be violent with the U.S. government ahead of the upcoming Copa América.

On Wednesday, Argentina’s Minister of Security Patricia Bullrich released a statement on X saying that her government had shared a list of names as part of its “Safe Tribunes” program.

“We have agreed with the United States to provide information from the Safe Tribunes program of all violent individuals we prohibit from entering soccer stadiums, so that none of them can enter them during the competition.”

Bullrich elaborated on the program later in an interview with Radio Mitre, saying that there are currently 15,000 names on the list of those prohibited to enter Argentine stadiums.

“We have a long-standing agreement with CONMEBOL to send them the lists,” Bullrich said. “In this case, since the Copa will be played in the United States, we sent the admission right lists to the embassy due to our agreement with the State Department.”

Bullrich added that the idea is to “prevent [those on the list] from entering the country, but we will see if they do it that way. We say these people in Argentina cannot enter stadiums because they are violent. We let them know. The methodology that the country uses is a matter for each individual.”

Violence among Argentina supporters has become a growing issue in recent years. A fan was killed in 2022 as a match between Gimnasia y Esgrima and Boca Juniors had to be suspended.

Last year, fans of Boca and Brazilian side Fluminense were arrested in Rio de Janeiro following clashes ahead of the Copa Libertadores final.

Earlier this year, two fans in Argentina were killed in two separate incidents on the same weekend.
