Canada star Davies forced off with injury against Argentina

Canada lost its captain midway through the second half of the Copa America semifinal

Canada star Alphonso Davies was forced off with an injury in the second half of his side’s Copa América semifinal against Argentina on Tuesday night.

With Argentina up 2-0 midway through the half, Gonzalo Montiel put in a tough sliding challenge on the Canadian captain. Montiel caught the ball but his follow-through took him through the right ankle of Davies.

Referee Piero Maza waved play on, much to the chagrin of Canada’s bench and head coach Jesse Marsch.

Davies was able to walk off the field under his own power, but moved slowly and was clearly in a lot of pain.

The Bayern Munich star tried to limp back onto the field but immediately went to ground, and had to be replaced in the 71st minute by Jonathan Osorio.

Argentina would see out a 2-0 win, advancing to Sunday’s final against either Uruguay or Colombia.

Davies will be a doubt for Saturday’s third-place game, and will then have some time off before joining up with Bayern for the Bundesliga club’s preseason.

After the match, Marsch admitted he was unsure of the prognosis for Davies, who was set for x-rays.

Lionel Messi finally scored his 1st 2024 Copa América goal for Argentina and it was fantastic

Lionel Messi finally got his 2024 Copa América goal, and it was a must-watch.

Soccer superstar Lionel Messi finally got on the board for this summer’s Copa América on Tuesday night for Argentina on a beautiful goal.

As Argentina faced off in the semifinals against a red-hot Canada team, Messi found the perfect lane to boot the ball in from a fair distance from the net.

It’s Messi’s first goal in the tournament, making this yet another edition of the Copa América where one of the greatest soccer players of all time registered a goal.

While we’re not sure if this is Messi’s last run with Argentina in the Copa América, we’re sure this excellent goal to give the team a 2-0 lead will be a special one for Messi and Argentina fans.

Argentina vs. Canada: How to watch 2024 Copa America, TV channel, live stream

It’s a David vs. Goliath matchup in the semifinal

Argentina and Canada are set for a rematch at the 2024 Copa América, but this time the stakes will be much higher than their initial meeting.

The two sides will face off in a semifinal on Tuesday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, with Argentina heavily favored to reach the final for a second straight Copa and fourth time out of five.

Argentina defeated Canada 2-0 in the tournament opener on June 20, a game in which the Reds asked plenty of questions of the world champions.

Canada used that match as a jump-off point, following that up with a win over Peru and a draw against Chile to reach the knockout stage. Jesse Marsch led his side to a shootout win over Venezuela in the quarterfinal after a 1-1 draw over 90 minutes.

After a perfect group stage, Argentina also needed a shootout to reach the semifinal, defeating Ecuador in the tiebreaker after a 1-1 draw in their quarterfinal.

The winner of this semifinal will face the winner of Uruguay-Colombia in the final in Miami on Sunday.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the match.

Noted Canadian Drake bets $300k on win over Argentina

Champagne Papi is putting his money where his mouth is when it comes to his country

Apparently undeterred by his track record of cursing sports teams, notable Canadian Drake has bet big on his country to score an upset win over Argentina on Tuesday.

Canada will face Argentina in the Copa América semifinal, as Jesse Marsch’s side aims to continue a stirring run through the tournament with what would easily be its biggest win yet.

The odds are stacked against the Reds, which offers an opportunity for adventurous — and rich — gamblers to make some real money off an upset.

Enter Drake, who if nothing else has proven to be adventurous in his gambling habits, and is most certainly rich.

The rap superstar has put his money where his mouth is when it comes to his country’s national team, putting up a $300,000 bet that could earn him $2.88 million if it pays off.

Drake did seem to acknowledge that the odds are stacked against him with his post on Instagram, saying: “This could get Messi.”

Marsch: Canada needs ‘best match we’ve ever played’ vs. Argentina

Argentina may be mighty, but Marsch says Canada is “going to go for it” in Tuesday’s semifinal

Jesse Marsch has seen few more daunting challenges than Tuesday’s Copa América semifinal against Argentina, but the Canada manager is pretty used to being the underdog.

Marsch even went so far as to announce exactly what it’s going to take for his side to have a shot against the defending Copa América and World Cup champions.

“Argentina will have to be the best match we’ve ever played and it still might not be enough,” Marsch told OneSoccer. “But, whatever. We’re going to go for it.”

Marsch has a point. Argentina won all three of its group-stage games without conceding, and is unbeaten in its last 12 Copa América clashes (a run dating back to July 2, 2019). In major tournament play, Lionel Scaloni’s side has gone 10 straight matches without a loss, during which it has shut its opponent out six times.

Is Argentina vulnerable?

Despite a long run of success, there have been enough wobbles to ponder whether Argentina is truly unstoppable. The champions appeared on the brink of yet another shutout victory at this Copa América on Thursday, only for a stoppage-time goal from Ecuador to force penalties.

La Tri then missed a golden chance even later in the match to score a winner, and proceeded to waste the opening created when Lionel Messi’s panenka attempt floated off the top of the crossbar in first round of the penalty-kick tiebreaker.

While Lautaro Martínez is alone atop the Copa América scoring charts with four goals, Argentina has just one first-half goal in its four matches at this tournament. Scaloni’s side hasn’t managed to score more than two goals in any match at this event.

Argentina’s lone loss at the 2022 World Cup came at the hands of Saudi Arabia, who were largely expected to be cannon fodder. Argentina got its act together from there, but were stressed at times by Australia in the round of 16, and were taken to penalties by both the Netherlands and France.

Notably, Canada opened this tournament against Argentina, falling 2-0. On one hand, Marsch’s side had more chances than most expected, particularly when the match was 0-0. On the other, Argentina underperformed its expected goals total on the day after manufacturing a series of breakaways.

Canada will surely alter its specific tactics against Argentina in some way, but don’t expect Marsch to move away from the frenetic pace and transition-heavy style that he’s espoused elsewhere. Canada will, as Marsch says, “go for it.”

In a way, though, the key part of that quote is “But, whatever.” Canada surely knows that even a B-plus effort from Messi and Co. is probably going to be enough to win the game, even if this is in fact the best performance in Canadian men’s soccer history.

What Canada can’t do is let that knowledge hand Argentina a psychological edge. If Marsch’s approach is going to work, Canada has to be fearless, and to a certain degree will have to embrace the absurdity of the idea that a win over Argentina is possible.

How to buy Argentina vs. Canada Copa América semifinal tickets

Tickets for Tuesday’s Copa América semifinal at MetLife Stadium between Argentina and Canada are still available for as little as $243.

The first Copa América semifinal is set, and it’s shaping up to be a David vs. Goliath type of matchup.

It’s no surprise to soccer fans that Lionel Messi and Argentina are into the semifinals of the 2024 Copa América. The top ranked team in the world and defending World Cup champions rolled through the group stage, but needed penalty kicks to defeat Ecuador and advance to the semifinals.

Unlike Argentina, very few people expected Canada to advance out of the group stage, let alone make it all the way to the semifinals.

Canada defeated Venezuela on Friday evening in a thrilling back and forth matchup that required penalty kicks to decide a winner and send the No. 48 ranked team in the world onto the semifinals.

Argentina and Canada will do battle just outside of New York City on Tuesday, July 9 at 7:30 p.m.

Argentina vs. Ecuador: How to watch 2024 Copa America, TV channel, live stream

The Copa América quarterfinals start Thursday, with Argentina (with or without Messi) taking on Ecuador

The 2024 Copa América knockout rounds begin in Houston on July 4, with defending champions Argentina taking on Ecuador.

Led by Lionel Messi, Argentina was rock-solid in the group stage. While the team’s attacking play in Group A hasn’t quite hit its normal standard, Lionel Scaloni’s side won all three of its group-stage matches without conceding.

Lautaro Martínez is the leader in the Golden Boot race with four goals, and a team with plenty of global stars will be heavily favored to proceed to the semifinals.

However, Messi remains a big question mark after missing time due to a suspected adductor injury. The iconic forward trained on Monday before Argentina flew from Florida to Texas for this match.

Ecuador, meanwhile, advanced to this stage despite a disappointing performance in Group B. La Tri fumbled away a lead in its opener en route to a loss to Venezuela, and Félix Sánchez’s side only scraped through in second place thanks to a nervy draw with Mexico on Sunday.

Piero Hincapié and Moisés Caicedo will need to be at their very best to help Ecuador hold Argentina at bay, while the team will lean heavily on veteran Enner Valencia to provide the offense on the counter.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the match.

Messi admits to feeling muscle discomfort after Argentina win over Chile

The Argentina star wasn’t feeling 100 percent after the Copa America win on Tuesday

After receiving treatment on his groin muscle during Argentina’s Copa América win over Chile, Lionel Messi admitted he was in some discomfort following the match on Tuesday.

Midway through the first half, an Argentina physio was seen massaging Messi’s upper right leg after the 37-year-old received a tough challenge.

Messi would be able to stay in the match, playing the full 90 minutes as Argentina clinched a spot in the quarterfinals with a 1-0 victory.

After the game, the Inter Miami star said he was optimistic that he avoided a serious problem, but admitted he was having some trouble during the match.

“In the first play, my adductor got hard. I didn’t feel a puncture or a tear, but I did find it difficult to move freely,” Messi told reporters after the game.

“Now I’m going to see,” he added. “The truth is it’s bothering me a little but I was able to finish the game, so I hope it’s nothing serious.”

With Messi set to undergo further examination, Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni told a press conference that his superstar’s movements throughout the match made him confident that he didn’t suffer an injury.

“I didn’t speak with him after the game,” Scaloni said. “He ended up playing through (until the end of the game). You saw he had the 50-meter sprint there… and it’s the last image I have (in my head). I can’t say more because I haven’t seen him.”

TyC Sports reported that with Argentina safely through to the knockout stage, Messi could be rested on Saturday against Peru at Hard Rock Stadium in his home city of Miami.

Scaloni said after Tuesday’s match that he was set to rotate his squad for the game against Peru.

“Against Peru, the guys who didn’t get minutes in these matches (Canada and Chile) will play,” Scaloni said.

The South American rivals will square off in New Jersey on Tuesday night

Chile and Argentina will square off on Tuesday night as both sides play their second Copa América group-stage match.

Argentina defeated Canada 2-0 in the tournament opener, and a win in this match will lock up a spot in the quarterfinal stage with a game to spare.

Chile, meanwhile, opened its Copa with a scoreless draw against Peru in a physical affair.

Canada Soccer ‘disturbed’ over Bombito racial abuse following Messi tackle

The Canada defender was targeted after a second-half tackle on the Argentina star

Canada Soccer has released a statement condemning racial abuse leveled at one of its players following Canada’s 2-0 defeat to Argentina in Thursday night’s Copa América opener.

The federation didn’t name the player who was abused, but defender Moïse Bombito received abuse online, posting on his Instagram story: “My beautiful Canada. No room for that bs.”

The Colorado Rapids also released a statement on their social media in support of Bombito, who plays for the MLS side.

“We’re extending our love and standing beside Moïse Bombito,” the Rapids said. “Discrimination and racism should never find a place in our sport, on social media, or within our society.”

Bombito was targeted after a rough challenge on Argentina superstar Lionel Messi late in the match in Atlanta. Messi was down on the turf for several minutes after a crunching tackle from Bombito, who first got the ball but then followed through Messi’s ankle. No foul was called on the play.

Messi ultimately returned to the match and delivered an assist on a late Lautaro Martínez goal that wrapped up the points for Argentina.

“Canada Soccer is aware of and deeply disturbed by racist comments made online and directed at one of our men’s national team players following tonight’s game,” a statement from the federation said. “We are in communication with CONCACAF and CONMEBOL about this matter.”
