Arcane Season 2 will not premiere in 2023

“We’re making progress on it,” says Riot Games CEO Nicolo Laurent.

Over a year has passed since Arcane: League of Legends premiered on Netflix, and it seems Season 2 is still (unfortunately) a long way off.

During an interview with League of Legends commentator Guan Ze Yua, Riot Games CEO Nicolo Laurent briefly touched on how Arcane’s second season is shaping up (thanks, IGN).

“I just watched the third episode of Season 2 before my flight to China, so we’re making progress on it,” Laurent explains. “It is not ready yet, and there are two reasons for that: one, you want the quality, you just don’t wanna rush, and so that takes time. So that’s the good reason.”

“The bad reason is, honestly, like, we didn’t know if Season 1 was gonna be a success,” Laurent continues. “If I had known, we could have started Season 2 way earlier, but we didn’t know, so we kind of waited a bit, and so now we’re paying the price, so it’s unfortunately not going to be this year.”

Riot CEO about ARCANE SEASON 2!

While slightly disappointing, it’s no surprise that Season 2 isn’t coming out in 2023, as it was only greenlit in late 2021. Shortly afterwards, Riot Games invested heavily in Fortiche Productions – the animation studio that made Arcane. Everyone involved likely doesn’t want to rush things, especially after the first season won an Emmy.

Arcane wins animation award at the Emmys

The League of Legends series is the first-ever video game adaptation to win an Emmy.

Arcane, the League of Legends spinoff series on Netflix, has made history by becoming the first video game adaptation to win big at the Emmy Awards.

During the Creative Arts Emmys ceremony on Saturday, Arcane won Outstanding Animated Program. Beating out other popular programs like Rick and Morty, Bob’s Burgers, The Simpsons, and Marvel’s What If…?

According to Deadline, series co-creator Christian Linke was overjoyed with the outcome.

“Thank you [for] this. It’s a big deal for us as we come from video games,” Linke said. “It’s been amazing to see the world embrace our characters and our stories, so thanks to Netflix, who believed in us from the beginning, thanks to Riot Games, who worked on the whole IP, and to all the people that have been with our game and League of Legends for the last 12 years or so who helped make it as big as it is now.”

Many already think of Arcane as the best games-to-film adaptation ever. A second season is already in the works, and Riot Games invested heavily in animation studio Fortiche Productions. We have come a long way since BloodRayne and Double Dragon, huh?

The show is also a clear front-runner for that ‘best adaptation’ category at The Game Awards this fall.

Riot Games invests in animation studio behind Arcane: League of Legends

Fortiche Productions gets some extra financial backing.

Fortiche Productions, the animation studio behind Arcane: League of Legends, is receiving some extra financial backing from Riot Games.

On Monday, Riot Games announced its intentions to increase support for Fortiche Productions after years of collaborating on various League of Legends shorts and Arcane.

“Fortiche has been an integral partner for a long time, but this agreement ensures we’ll be working closely for decades to come,” Nicolo Laurent, CEO of Riot Games, said in a press release. “We hold a high bar for everyone we work with and insist they understand players deeply and focus on them relentlessly, and from day one, Fortiche has exemplified Player Experience First.”

“The various collaborations with Riot Games, and especially Arcane, have made Fortiche Production a new major player on the international animation scene,” Fortiche Productions co-founders said. “Riot Games, by trusting us, has given us the means to achieve our common ambitions and has shown that it is possible to offer new content that can reach a large audience.”

Arcane: League of Legends came out last fall, and since went on to win nine trophies at the Annie Awards. A second season is already in the works too.
