Marshall classily played App State’s fight song to show support after Helene

Helene has impacted App State and western North Carolina in a big way.

Helene has devastated western North Carolina.

It was a Category 4 hurricane when it reached U.S. soil and had weakened to a tropical storm by the time it hit the Tar Heel State, but still ravaged the region, from Bat Cave to Boone, Canton to Chimney Rock, Asheville to Avery County. Dams broke, buildings and homes were washed away, people died, and lives were changed forever.

The death toll from Helene has topped 200, making it the deadliest storm since Katrina. The long road to recovery for western North Carolina is just beginning.

On Saturday, through football, Appalachian State University tried to restore some sense of normalcy to its community. For the first time since Helene’s impact was felt, the Mountaineers played a game – away at Marshall, nestled in Huntington, West Virginia.

According to some reports online, it seems that App State’s marching band was unable to make the trip.

And so, in sign of support and solidarity, Marshall’s band classily played their opponents’ fight song.

Separated by a drive of less than five hours, Marshall and App State both call Appalachia home. They’re old rivals who played every season from 1977 to 1997 and have since renewed it now that both are in the Sun Belt conference.

And both communities now know the pain of a tragic disaster. The Herd had to rebuild their football program after many of its players, coaches and boosters were killed in a plane crash in 1970.

Marshall won on Saturday 52-37, but as App State coach Shawn Clark said before the game, what’s on the scoreboard really doesn’t matter right now.

“We’re very fortunate that we get to play this game of football that we love. Football is important, but it’s not the most important thing right now. The most important thing is our community, our county. Our county has a lot of pride in App State Football and App State Athletics, so we want to make sure we go out and represent the best way we know how.”

Clemson delivers dominant Appalachian State win behind Klubnik’s breakout

Clemson’s offense goes crazy in the first half as the Tigers handle Appalachian State.

Dabo Swinney and the Clemson football program bounced back in a big way in Week 2 with a dominant 66-20 win over Appalachian State.

The win was headlined by a ridiculous first-half performance from starting quarterback Cade Klubnik, who scored seven total touchdowns in the game. Throwing five through the air and two on the ground, Klubnik’s performance was one of the best in Clemson’s history and could have been even bigger if he had played more than a half.

Klubnik’s five passing touchdowns started with a 76-yard strike down the middle in the first quarter to freshman wide receiver Bryant Wesco Jr., who looked like a star. Wesco ended the game with three catches for 130 yards and a touchdown. Another freshman wide receiver, T.J. Moore, scored the first touchdown of his career as well, on a 33-yard pass.

Veteran wide receiver Antonio Williams added a 29-yard score, but he wasn’t the veteran who shined the most out of the pass catchers. Tight end Jake Briningstool recorded seven catches for 100 yards and two touchdowns. Klubnik completed 24-26 passes for 378 yards along with the seven scores Star running back Phil Mafah added 118 yards and a score on just ten carries.
Clemson’s second string and beyond got the work from there, with redshirt freshman Christopher Vizzina getting some quality reps.

This is exactly the performance Clemson’s offense needed. It looked like the Tigers were sinking, and while this doesn’t guarantee anything, it does show what this offense is capable of.

It was a massive win for the Tigers.

Clemson’s Offensive X-Factor against Appalachian State

Clemson needs to be capable of throwing the ball.

Was there any other choice for this one?

You could have easily made the case for Clemson starting quarterback Cade Klubnik being the Tigers’ X-Factor against Georgia in Week 1. I opted to go with Phil Mafah, which I would say was a good choice, as Clemson’s lack of being able to establish the run had serious repercussions on the rest of the game. Things are different this week; however, I can tell you now that Mafah will have his way against App State. That’s not to discredit the Mountaineers, that’s just one of the best running backs in college football bouncing back.

The thing I don’t know, is how Klubnik will play. We’re at the point where there are no guarantees with Clemson’s passing attack. Even with the talent they have at wide receiver, which many still don’t believe the Tigers have, there’s few opponents in college football right now where I’d say this passing attack is going to carve up. It’s believe it when we see it at this point.

So, Klubnik is our X-Factor ad for good reason. If App State commits to stopping the run, which is what any sane defensive coordinator would do against Clemson, the offensive production may fall on Klubnik’s shoulders. Today is a day he needs to prove why he’s a starting quarterback at a program as strong as Clemson.

CBS Sports analysts Patterson, Palm, pick App State to upset Clemson

Two CBS Sports analysts have classic Week 1 overreactions.

A lot of times, you’ll hear people say don’t overreact to one week of football. More often than not, this is a saying that reigns true as in college football, there are going to be some overreactions to what happened in Week 1.

It seems two of the people who are getting caught up in these Week 1 overreactions are CBS Sports analysts Chip Patterson and Jerry Palm. Don’t get me wrong, I respect those who are willing to go against the grain and ride with something they believe, but there’s also reality.

In our reality, can App State take down Clemson? Absolutely. Is it an incredibly difficult task, especially considering the Tigers are home at Death Valley in Clemson Memorial Stadium for this matchup? Are we forgetting that Clemson is one of the most difficult environments to play in? Especially during the Dabo Swinney era of college football?

This is a program that not too long ago, won 40 home games in a row. This is a program that has was 59-2 heading into last season at home since 2014 when the College Football Playoff first started. So what you’re telling me, is that this Clemson football team, led by a future hall-of-fame head coach, is going to lose to Appalachian State because they struggled with the No. 1 ranked team in the country in Georgia? I’m not buying it.

Again, I respect taking the shot, but this isn’t the time. Maybe this was the fun pick for the two, but the Clemson disrespect here is a bit outlandish.

Fans had so many jokes about App State’s Cure Bowl win amid rainy, messy chaos

College football fans loved the Cure Bowl’s slippery madness.

Well, somehow, we made it to the end of a very wet and slippery Avocados From Mexico Cure Bowl matchup with Appalachian State beating Miami (Ohio), 13-9, in a game that was filled with chaos and no first-half touchdowns.

The weather Saturday at FBC Mortgage Stadium in Orlando was less than ideal, as rain poured throughout the game and flooded the field. It was raining so hard that the rain heard on ESPN’s broadcast sounded at times like horses trotting, and some players ended up covered in paint from the field.

It was as chaotic as you’d imagine with a downpour like this, and they combined for 13 (THIRTEEN!!) total fumbles — seven from App State and six from Miami — and six total turnovers.

It was a mess, but the Mountaineers managed to come out on top.

As the field flooded with water and the game kept getting more and more hilarious, college football fans loved the slippery madness and had so many jokes.

Troy coach Jon Sumrall threw a ferocious tantrum over a possible missed call during Sun Belt title game

Well, someone needs a nap.

Troy football coach Jon Sumrall absolutely blew his top on the sideline of the Sun Belt Championship game on Saturday.

After what looked like a missed facemak call on opponent Appalachian State, Sumrall ran onto the field and screamed at the referees as some of the other people on the Troy sideline tried to hold him back.

Sumrall pushed on and argued with someone on his team during his sideline tirade for smartly trying to restrain him. The irate coach also did a facemask pulling motion in front of his face to try and communicate what he thought the penalty was.

If you’re looking at the most epic coaching meltdown this season, don’t look to Miami and Mario Cristobal. Look right to Troy and Sumrall for that honor.

While we understand that referees can make outrageously bad calls and miss blatant penalties, Sumrall’s temper tantrum just felt completely unnecessary.
