Eagles’ Nick Sirianni snubbed in NFL Coach of the Year voting

Despite leading his team to 14 wins and the No. 1 overall seed in the NFC, Eagles’ Nick Sirianni is not a finalist for the AP NFL Coach of the Year award

The Associated Press started off Wednesday morning announcing award candidates and it was revealed that Brian Daboll, Doug Pederson, and Kyle Shanahan are the finalists for The Associated Press 2022 NFL Coach of the Year award.

Even after leading his team to 14 wins and the No. 1 overall seed in the NFC, Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni was an obvious snub despite having his photo used in the press release and build-up.

Daboll led the Giants to a 9-7-1 record in his first season as head coach. Former Eagles head coach Doug Pederson guided the Jacksonville Jaguars to a 9-8 record and an AFC South title in his first year with the team.

While Kyle Shanahan led the San Francisco 49ers to a 13-4 mark, including 5-0 down the stretch with third-string rookie quarterback Brock Purdy.

The winners will be announced at NFL Honors on Feb. 9. A nationwide panel of 50 media members who regularly cover the league completed voting before the start of the playoffs.

Doug Pederson named a finalist for NFL Coach of the Year

Doug Pederson is one of three finalists along with Brian Daboll and Kyle Shanahan.

Jacksonville Jaguars coach Doug Pederson is one of three finalists for the Associated Press NFL Coach of the Year Award, the AP announced Wednesday morning.

The other two finalists are Brian Daboll of the New York Giants and Kyle Shanahan of the San Francisco 49ers.

In Pederson’s first season with the Jaguars, he led the team to an AFC South title and a postseason victory before the year ended with a loss in the Divisional Round. Jacksonville did that despite being one of only two teams in the NFL — along with the Chicago Bears — with zero Pro Bowl or All-Pro players.

The Jaguars won just four games in the two seasons prior to Pederson taking the reins.

Daboll similarly turned around a struggling franchise, leading the Giants to a 9-7-1 record and the team’s first trip to the playoffs since the 2016 season. Shanahan’s 49ers came into the 2022 season with high hopes, but had to navigate injuries suffered by quarterbacks Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo. Despite the quarterback carousel, San Francisco is set to meet the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship with Mr. Irrelevant, Brock Purdy, under center.

The Coach of the Year will be announced on Feb. 9 during the NFL Honors show that will air on NBC at 9 p.m. ET.

Andy Reid: ‘Phenomenal’ Doug Pederson should be in Coach of the Year race

Andy Reid had a lot of praise for Doug Pederson’s “phenomenal coaching job.”

Talk of Doug Pederson being named the AP NFL Coach of the Year has ramped up as the Jacksonville Jaguars continue to make an unlikely run from the worst team in the NFL for two straight years into one of eight teams that can win Super Bowl LVII.

One of his supporters will be on the opposite sideline Saturday when the Jaguars play the Kansas City Chiefs in the Divisional Round.

“Tremendous coaching job,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said of Pederson on Tuesday, via Chiefs Wire. “Phenomenal coaching job. I’d imagine he’s up for the Coach of the Year by his performance and how he’s resurrected that program there. That’s not an easy thing to do, and he’s done it as well or better than anybody.”

Reid, 64, earned the award in 2002 while he was with the Philadelphia Eagles. While he hasn’t received the honor since joining the Chiefs, he led a similar program resurrection in 2013 when he took over in Kansas City. A year after the Chiefs finished 2-14, Reid led the team to an 11-5 record in his first season.

Last week, Hall of Fame coach Tony Dungy revealed that he already voted for Pederson to win Coach of the Year honors.

Voting for the award occurs after the conclusion of the regular season, so Jacksonville’s postseason performance won’t have any impact on Pederson’s chances of winning.

His main competitors for the award are likely Nick Sirianni of the Philadelphia Eagles, Brian Daboll of the New York Giants, and Dan Campbell of the Detroit Lions.
