Colts worked out QB Jeff Driskel, four others

The Colts held a workout for five players, including QB Jeff Driskel.

The Indianapolis Colts held a workout for five players, according to the league’s transaction wire Monday.

Among those five players included quarterback Jeff Driskel, wide receiver John Brown, tight end Antony Auclair, defensive back Keidron Smith and wide receiver Makai Polk.

The Colts have Kellen Mond on the practice squad while Gardner Minshew and Sam Ehlinger are on the active roster so it’s interesting to see them work out Driskel, who was released from the Arizona Cardinals practice squad last week.

We’ll see if anything comes of these workouts in terms of a signing, or the Colts may just be keeping tabs on available options.

Texans work out TE Ryan Izzo

The Houston Texans worked out a familiar tight end on Day 2 of training camp in Ryan Izzo.

The Houston Texans worked out a familiar face in tight end Ryan Izzo on Saturday, according to a league source.

Izzo, 26, previously spent the 2021 offseason and training camp with the Texans after they traded a seventh-round pick to obtain his rights from the New England Patriots. After releasing Izzo at the end of preseason, the former Patriots 2018 seventh-round pick spent time on the New York Giants, Seattle Seahawks, and Tennessee Titans’ practice squads. The Titans released Izzo on June 1.

The Texans are evaluating options at tight end as coach Lovie Smith told reporters Saturday after the second training camp practice that Antony Auclair would “be out a little bit.” Auclair left the first day of practice on a cart with a bag of ice on his right knee.

Izzo has 19 catches for 313 yards and a touchdown through 19 career games, 16 of which he has started.

Texans injuries from Day 1 of training camp

The Houston Texans had one injury of note — TE Antony Auclair — after the first day of training camp at Houston Methodist Training Center.

The Houston Texans held their first day of practice Friday, and it did come with some injuries.

According to Aaron Wilson from the Pro Football Network, tight end Antony Auclair was carted off the practice field and had an ice bag on his right knee. Coach Lovie Smith did not provide any update on Auclair during his post-practice presser.

The Texans had four players not practice in defensive end Jonathan Greenard (foot), linebacker Kamu Grugier-Hill (knee), center Justin Britt (foot), and receiver Phillip Dorsett (undisclosed).

Defensive back Tristin McCollum, defensive end Jordan Jenkins, and rookie tight end Teagan Quitoriano are on the active/physically unable to perform list. All three are eligible to come back at any time after passing their physicals.

Texans re-signing tight end Antony Auclair

The Houston Texans are bringing back tight end Antony Auclair.

The Houston Texans are keeping a veteran presence in their tight end room.

According to Aaron Wilson from the Pro Football Network, the Texans are bringing back 28-year-old tight end Antony Auclair for another season.

The former Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Super Bowl LV champion played 16 games for Houston was more of a blocking tight end for the Texans. Nevertheless Auclair found his ways to touch the football as he caught five passes for 47 yards and a touchdown in his 16 games, 13 of which he started.

Auclair told reporters on Oct. 11 that he enjoyed playing for Houston and with the tight ends they had on the roster in Jordan Akins, Pharaoh Brown, and rookie Brevin Jordan.

I really like my job here, I think it’s a good fit. I think I fit the group, too,” Auclair said. “We’ve got (Jordan Akins) who’s a great receiver, we’ve got Pharaoh that’s a complete guy, and we’ve got this new guy, Brevin, that is trying to get better every week, every day, and he’s doing a great job. So, for me in this position right now, I’m trying to do my job, be a great blocker and also be a great leader for Brevin to get better every week, and maybe someday he’s going to be a great guy, a great receiver.”

Auclair will get another chance to be a leader in the tight end room as the Texans are keeping him around for the 2022 season.

Texans activate DT Maliek Collins among other roster moves for Week 17

The Houston Texans activated Maliek Collins off the COVID-19 reserve for Week 17 among other roster moves.

The Houston Texans are getting some help along the interior of their defensive line as they take on the San Francisco 49ers Sunday at 3:05 p.m. Central Time at Levi’s Stadium.

The Texans activated defensive tackle Maliek Collins off the COVID-19 reserve. The former Dallas Cowboys 2016 third-round pick will return to the field for the first time since Houston’s 30-16 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 15.

Houston placed linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis and tight end Antony Auclair on the COVID-19 reserve. Auclair was on Thursday’s injury report with an illness.

The Texans waived defensive lineman Xavier Williams, who was signed to Houston’s active roster on Dec. 21.

When will Texans rookie TE Brevin Jordan see the field?

Rookie tight end Brevin Jordan has yet to be activated for the Houston Texans. When will the fifth-rounder from Miami see the field?

HOUSTON — Five games into the regular season, the Houston Texans have gained great production from their rookies.

Davis Mills has done a substantial job filling in for the injured Tyrod Taylor at quarterback, while Roy Lopez has been a positive force on the defensive line. Garret Wallow has provided the Texans with some consistency on special teams. And before a shoulder injury that sidelined him for three straight weeks, Nico Collins was beginning to thrive as a suitable receiver in the passing game.

But the one rookie who has yet to make an impact amid his first season is Brevin Jordan.

The rookie tight end from Miami has been a healthy scratch all season, and according to coach David Culley, Jordan’s lack of playing time is the result of the productivity of the veterans at the position.

But if Culley and the coaching staff continue to base a bulk of their game-day rotations on the results of weekly practices, there is a possibility Jordan will see the field before the conclusion of the 2021 campaign.

“He’s getting better and better, and he’s getting more comfortable,” Culley said prior to their Week 4 loss to the Buffalo Bills in late September. “He’s still learning what we do, but for the most part, his time’s coming. That’s a good room there. The three guys that are in front of him, that’s a good room. He’s developing, he’s learning, he’s got good mentors there, and at some point when his time comes, I know he’ll be ready.”

Antony Auclair, who caught one of Mills’ three touchdown passes in a loss to the New England Patriots on Sunday, says each week Jordan is progressing in learning the position on an NFL level.

As a veteran tight end who has taken the initiative to become a great leader to the rookie, Auclair has seen the enhancements Jordan has made to his blocking — which was his most significant flaw entering the 2021 NFL draft.

But Jordan’s attribute as a pass-catcher remains his top quality, something Auclair and Houston’s coaching staff have been most impressed by since the start of training camp.

As a three-year starter with the Miami Hurricanes, Jordan ended his collegiate career with 1,358 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns on 105 catches.

“I think Brevin is a great receiver,” Auclair said following practice Monday afternoon. “He’s becoming that complete guy, and I think he’s an explosive guy, as well. I think when the time comes, he’s going to be ready, and he’s going to be ready to be explosive, for sure.”

Ahead of his rookie season during training camp, Jordan said his most prominent goal was to continue to get better while stacking days. He believes his skill set is perfect for the Texans’ offense. But the only issue that is keeping Jordan from seeing the field is an opportunity amid a crowded tight-end core.

It’s an opportunity that will open up for Jordan following each thriving day at practice.

“I think the biggest adjustment for me will be working on my tendencies on the field, working on my technique,” Jordan said after the Texans selected him during the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. “The defensive ends and the linebackers in the NFL are a lot bigger and lot stronger.”

“I’m going in there adding some strength, adding some muscle to my mass, just going in there having to block guys is going to be the biggest adjustment, but I’m ready to take on the challenge.”

Texans TE Antony Auclair says rookie Davis Mills is ‘a tough guy’

Houston Texans tight end Antony Auclair says that rookie quarterback Davis Mills displayed resilience coming off of the 40-0 shutout in Week 4.

Davis Mills could have packed it in.

The rookie quarterback completed 11-of-21 for 87 yards and four interceptions in the Houston Texans’ 40-0 loss to the Buffalo Bills in Week 4. It was the worst loss in franchise history and the first shutout against the Texans since Sept. 22, 2016 against the New England Patriots.

Instead of going in a shell, Mills came out aggressive in Week 5 against the Patriots at NRG Stadium, and he earned some respect from tight end Antony Auclair.

That guy’s a tough guy, man,” Auclair said. “That loss in Buffalo was a tough loss. He always stayed calm, and I think you don’t see that from a regular guy. Coming off that bad loss and then coming out firing in that first quarter. I think he played great.”

Mills bounced back against New England, going 21-of-29 for 312 yards and three touchdowns.

“If you look around in the NFL with all those first-rounder quarterbacks that are starting right now, they don’t have that many wins,” said Auclair. “I think Davis is doing a great job right now for us, and he’s only getting better. I think the communication amongst the offense got better last week, and that’s part of it. And also, confidence-wise, Davis, I thought he was very confident in that  game. He played well.”

Mills will have another chance to play well and possibly lead the Texans to their first win since Week 1 as they take on the Indianapolis Colts Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Central Time at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Texans TE Antony Auclair details what he learned from Rob Gronkowski

Houston Texans tight end Antony Auclair reveals what he learned from spending time with Rob Gronkowski last year with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Houston Texans tight end Antony Auclair is a Super Bowl champion. In 2020, the former 2017 undrafted free agent from Laval University in Quebec was on the roster and even appeared in eight games, starting in two.

Auclair was able to work with four-time All-Pro tight end Rob Gronkowski, who made his comeback to the NFL that season. Being around the 2014 NFL Comeback Player of the Year helped Auclair as he was in the last year of his rookie contract.

I was with Gronk more as a tight end,” said Auclair. “I think that the preparation mentally, physically and doing all the little details outside of football to prepare himself for games and stuff, I think is off the charts for sure. I was trying to do that.”

Auclair signed with the Texans on April 14, and began to apply some of the same aspects of mental and physical preparation to his game.

“During this offseason, I applied some of these things to my game, and I think that’s showing right now,” Auclair said. “Because last year I had a bad injury, I pulled my calf. I was out half of the year, and then I never came back 100%. I think that was part of it, in my preparation and all that. So, I learned from these guys and I try to apply that for myself.”

Auclair caught his first career touchdown pass against the New England Patriots in the 25-22 loss at NRG Stadium. The 6-6, 256-pound tight end hauled in an 11-yard touchdown pass from rookie quarterback Davis Mills to put the Texans ahead 6-0 in the first quarter.

The 28-year-old spent the first two games on the Texans’ practice squad, but was part of the club’s two standard elevations for game day. Houston signed Auclair to the active roster on Sept. 21 when they placed quarterback Tyrod Taylor on injured reserve.

Texans TE Antony Auclair out against the Browns with eye injury

Houston Texans tight end Antony Auclair is out for the remainder of the Week 2 contest with the Cleveland Browns due to an eye injury.

HOUSTON — The injuries continue to pile up for the Houston Texans. Following the loss of Danny Amendola and Tyrod Taylor, the Texans lost tight end, Antony Auclair. Auclair sustained an eye injury midway through the third quarter and has been ruled out for the remainder of the game.

Auclair was elevated to the Texans’ active roster on Saturday to give Houston additional help against the Browns front seven. The extra protection was helpful, as Houston held a 14-7 lead over the Browns before injuries began to derail the game.

Auclair signed with the Texans’ practice squad after he was left off Houston’s initial 53-man roster prior to the start of the season.
