How did the Rutgers Olympic sports do this past week?

Although February is in the rearview mirror, Rutgers athletics has continued to be a winning machine

Although February is in the rearview mirror, Rutgers athletics has continued to be a winning machine. Baseball and softball are off to impressive starts due to their potent offenses. So far, they have combined to post a 21-9 record before the start of conference play. However, they are not the only teams adding to the win column.

After a three-game skid, Rutgers men’s basketball ended February with an 82-52 win over Michigan. They ended the month strong due to the play of Clifford Omoruyi, who added 19 points to his resume.

As temperatures continue to rise, there is plenty coming up for Rutgers
fans to look forward to. After a brief hiatus, Rutgers wrestling will be back in action on March 9 for the Big Ten championships. The lacrosse season is also officially under way, with the men’s team off to a 4-1 start.

Rutgers unable to conquer road demons against Princeton

Rutgers women’s basketball struggled at Princeton.

On Wednesday night, Rutgers women’s basketball’s road woes continued at Princeton. The Scarlet Knights suffered a 66-55 loss as Princeton set the tone early with a big first half.

With 1,307 people in attendance, the Tigers outscored Rutgers 38-17 in the first two quarters. The Scarlet Knights played better in the second half, but that was not enough, as they fell to 0-2 on the road.

On a night when the Tigers offense proved problematic, Kaitlyn Chen led the way offensively with 19 points. She also got help from Madison St. Rose, who scored 17 points, her second-highest total of the season. While Chen and St. Rose shined, Princeton’s defense played a key role.

Part of Rutgers problems were due to their ability to take care of the ball. They committed 21 turnovers and 11 fouls. That made it hard for the Scarlet Knights to gain momentum and cut the Tigers lead to single digits.

Regardless of the results, there were still some positives from Wednesday night. Kaylene Smikle continued to be a scoring machine with 14 points and Antonia Bates added 14 of her own.

Rutgers will be back in action on Sunday afternoon when they take on a ranked team for the second time this season in Virginia Tech.

Rutgers women’s basketball falls to Indiana

Rutgers women’s basketball battled well against a ranked Indiana team in a loss.

Rutgers showed that they are closing the gap with the elite teams of the Big Ten in Saturday’s 66-56 loss to No. 16 Indiana. The matchup was the Big Ten opener for Rutgers and also marked their first game of the season against a ranked opponent.

Rutgers kept the game close in the first quarter, but Indiana put the game away as the night continued. Mackenzie Holmes set the tone offensively for the Hoosiers with a team-high 25 points. Sydney Parish also had a big night with 14 points of her own.

While the Hoosiers’ offense proved to be too much for Rutgers, there were a few bright spots. Kaylene Smikle was a scoring machine, adding 19 points to her resume. She got some help from Antonia Bates, who finished with 11 points.

Although Bates and Smikle kept Rutgers in the game, the Scarlet Knights never got closer than five points in the fourth quarter. Against one of the top 25 teams in the country Rutgers could not get a stop as time winded down.

Following the loss, the Scarlet Knights are now 6-6 this season. They will have a shot at getting back in the win column on Wednesday when they take on Princeton. The Tigers will be a challenging matchup as they are off to a 6-3 start.
