5 Sooners selected in latest CBS Sports 7-round NFL mock draft

Led by Anton Harrison, five Oklahoma Sooners were selected in CBS Sports’ latest 7-round mock draft.

With the NFL draft starting on Thursday, several Sooners are getting looks in the draft. The two that stand out are offensive lineman Anton Harrison and wide receiver Marvin Mims. Wanya Morris, Eric Gray, and Jalen Redmond will get looks too, and should hear their name called at some point during this weekend.

In Josh Edwards Jr.’s latest mock draft, five Sooners found new homes at the NFL level. One surprise is that tight end Brayden Willis wasn’t considered. Here’s a look at where the five Sooners went in the mock draft.

Commanders enter 2023 NFL Draft with 8 selections

The Commanders hold eight picks in the 2023 NFL draft. Will they stay at No. 16 or move back?

The Washington Commanders are slated to select eight new players in this week’s 2023 NFL draft, beginning Thursday night.

The selections the Commanders own heading into Thursday night’s first round are:

Round 1 (16th overall)

Round 2 (47th overall)

Round 3 (97th overall)

Round 4 (118th overall)

Round 5 (150th overall)

Round 6 (193rd overall)

Round 6 (215th overall)

Round 7 (233rd overall)

The 97th selection is a compensatory draft pick awarded to Washington. The choice comes as a return for the free agent departure of right guard Brandon Scherff to the Jacksonville Jaguars during the 2022 free agency period.

The 215th overall selection is also a compensatory pick awarded to Washington due to the free agent departure of defensive tackle Tim Settle to the Buffalo Bills. Settle also departed during the 2022 free agency signing period.

2010 and 2015 are the last two drafts when Washington used its first-round choice on an offensive lineman. Trent Williams out of Oklahoma was the fourth overall selection in 2010 and Scherff, from Iowa, was the fifth overall selection in 2015.

Clearly, the Washington offensive line fell off somewhat in its performance in 2022. The Commanders have thus signed free agent linemen Andrew Wylie (Kansas City) and Nick Gates (NY Giants).

Most analysts have stated they believe offensive tackles Paris Johnson Jr. (Ohio State) and Pete Skoronski (Northwestern) will have already been chosen before the Commanders’ No. 16 pick.

Many feel the Commanders are hoping Georgia’s Broderick Jones or Tennessee’s Darnell Wright will be available at No. 16.

If those four tackles are already taken, Washington could trade down a few spots, still obtaining a tackle as Oklahoma’s Anton Harrison is also expected to be selected in Thursday night’s first round.

But of course, none of us know how the draft will fall at No. 16. If there is a run on offensive tackles, it could be the Commanders who might feel the player giving them the most value at No. 16 could be a cornerback or perhaps even a defensive end.

Montez Sweat is entering the final year of his contract, and Chase Young’s knee injury and subpar production have led many to believe he will not be offered the fifth-year option. Thus defensive end could be a huge need in 2024.

Anton Harrison, Marvin Mims projected in the top 35 of Touchdown Wire’s latest mock draft

In his latest mock draft for the Touchdown Wire, Doug Farrar projects a pair of Sooners to go off the board in the top 35 picks.

The NFL Draft is right around corner. The first round is this Thursday and goes through Saturday. Several Sooners should expect to hear their name called along the way.

Anton Harrison is the Sooner most likely to get drafted in the first round of the draft on Thursday. He has a great combination of size, athleticism, and power at a position like offensive tackle that has NFL teams salivating over his potential.

Marvin Mims is a lock to go at minimum in the early 2nd round because of his combination of speed and pass-catching that’s rarely seen in receivers coming out of college. He really helped his chances of going high when he posted a 4.38 40-yard dash time at the NFL combine too.

In Doug Farrar’s latest mock draft for Touchdown Wire, he projects both Sooners to go off the board in the first 35 picks.

31. Kansas City Chiefs select OT Anton Harrison

Andy Reid lost both of his starting offensive tackles (Orlando Brown Jr. and Andrew Wylie) in free agency, and responded to that by signing former Jaguars tackle Jawaan Taylor to a four-year, $80 million contract with $60 million guaranteed. Now, Taylor is a right tackle, and while the Chiefs have made all the right noises about his ability to move to the left side, we’re of the opinion that they should leave Taylor where he’s most comfortable, and get a guy who has already proven to be a natural to his quarterback’s blind side. That would be Harrison, who is as clean a pass-protector in this class, has run-blocking potential, and is consistent in his mechanics and technique. With this move, Kansas City’s offensive line should rival the NFL’s best. – Farrar, Touchdown Wire

Anton Harrison in Kansas City would be a match made in heaven. Harrison would go to the most electric offense in the NFL and get to protect Patrick Mahomes’ blind side at left tackle. After Kansas City lost some of its offensive line depth, Harrison would fit right on the Chiefs’ offensive line.

35. Indianapolis Colts select WR Marvin Mims

Farrar has Marvin Mims going early in the second round of his latest mock draft. His speed shown at the combine really helped his case. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see him shoot up NFL teams’ draft boards.

Mims’ issue is that he’s under 6 feet. However, he’d be a good addition to an Indianapolis Colts team that needs as much help on offense as possible. If the Colts were to go quarterback at the top of the first round, grabbing Mims in the second would provide a reliable target on the outside for the foreseeable future.

Colts’ 2023 NFL draft big board: Offensive Tackles

There are plenty of OT prospects for the Colts in this draft.

The Indianapolis Colts may have an idea of what their starting offensive tackle duo will look like entering the 2023 NFL draft, but depth and competition are needed in the worst way.

With only Bernhard Raimann and Braden Smith as players with experience on the roster, the Colts also have Jordan Murray and Carter O’Donnell rounding out the room. That’s it. We should expect the Colts to add a free agent after the draft, but depth is needed.

It’s a pretty solid draft class for offensive tackles. A lot of them have starting experience and versatility on both sides of the line. It wouldn’t be a surprise if the Colts added two offensive tackle prospects with their nine selections.

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

As we break down the prospects by round, think of the “rounds” as tiers and when I believe the team should begin to consider drafting them.

We also created big boards at the following positions:

Here’s a look at my big board for the offensive tackles as it relates to the Colts in the 2023 NFL draft:

What offensive tackle will be available for the Commanders?

What will Washington prioritize if it selects an offensive lineman in the first round?

If the Commanders want an offensive tackle at No. 16 overall in next week’s 2023 NFL draft, will there be one good enough to be an anchor for the next decade?

What will the Washington coaches and scouts prioritize in their evaluations of this year’s class of offensive tackles?

Will left tackle be a priority over right tackle? Will pass blocking be the highest-graded quality? Or might it be those who are physical enough to actually push their defender off of the ball in an effective running game?

Quarterback is no question the largest investment a team makes to their roster. With that in mind, coaches know it is a must to protect their quarterback. But of course, isn’t it just as true that the best protection of your quarterback is an effective running game?

Peter Skoronski was a great tackle at Northwestern; however, his arm length of 33 inches has some scouts thinking he will be a better guard inside than a tackle on the outside. Thus he could fall to No. 16, but if you want a tackle do the Commanders take him?

Tennessee’s Darnell Wright is a right tackle who, in the last month, is moving up mock draft boards. Will Ohio State’s Paris Johnson still be available? Most mock drafts have Johnson going earlier.

Georgia’s Broderick Jones is a beast of a left tackle, and Oklahoma’s Anton Harrison is believed to have the best feet of the prospective NFL tackles.

If the Commanders want one of the better tackles, they might be able to trade back and still get one in the first round, but a consensus is that none of them will still be available when the Commanders are on the clock again at No. 47.

New USA TODAY mock has Bucs taking Oklahoma OT

The Bucs brought OT Anton Harrison in for an official visit earlier in the month.

There are quite a few tackle prospects in the upcoming 2023 NFL draft, and it’s no secret that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are looking for one to replace Donovan Smith.

USA Today’s new mock draft from Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz on Saturday is understanding of this trend as well, as the mock has Tampa Bay selecting Oklahoma LT Anton Harrison with the No. 19 pick.

Here is what the mock had to say about the potential pick:

In bringing in Baker Mayfield to compete with Kyle Trask to be Tom Brady’s successor, the Buccaneers appear have telegraphed a patient approach to a rebuild. If Tampa Bay is going to wait at least a year to make a big investment for its quarterback of the future, it would be wise to bring on a left tackle like Harrison to elevate pass protection and allow Tristan Wirfs to remain on the right side.

This pick wouldn’t be a surprising one for the Bucs, as the team has already brought Harrison in for an official visit. The team clearly was interested enough to want to meet him in person, so it stands to reason that he’s definitely on their draft board — and should some of the bigger names like Paris Johnson and Broderick Jones come off the board before Tampa Bay picks, Harrison would be a strong option for the Bucs.

Breaking down Chiefs’ picks in Touchdown Wire’s latest 3-round mock draft

Our @goldmctNFL breaks down @TheNFLWire’s picks for the #Chiefs in their latest three-round mock draft.

It won’t be long now, Chiefs Kingdom.

The 2023 NFL draft is just around the bend and we’re seeing plenty of intriguing mock draft scenarios for the Kansas City Chiefs as a result.

Our friend Doug Farrar at Touchdown Wire released a brand-new mock draft that covers the first three rounds. He hits what are considered the three biggest needs for the Chiefs with his picks made and even provided a little fanfare by sending the team a Kansas City local in his mock draft.

Here’s a quick reaction to the players sent to the Chiefs in this mock draft:

5 things we’re watching for at Oklahoma’s spring game

Oklahoma has its spring game this weekend, and we’ve got five things we’ll be looking at for Oklahoma’s spring debut of team 129.

Team 129 in Oklahoma’s illustrious football history takes the field publically for the first time on Saturday afternoon. It’s a game and weekend that means a lot to the team, staff, fanbase, and recruits.

Oklahoma comes into this spring off the heels of its worst season in over 20 years. The Sooners were a rough watch at times. Despite that, they still found themselves in a bowl game against a talented Florida State team.

Oklahoma lost the likes of [autotag]Brayden Willis[/autotag], [autotag]Eric Gray[/autotag], [autotag]Anton Harrison[/autotag], [autotag]Wanya Morris[/autotag], [autotag]Marvin Mims[/autotag], [autotag]Jalen Redmond[/autotag], and [autotag]DaShaun White[/autotag] to the NFL Draft process.

The Sooners saw players transfer out but also welcomed in a number of players from their top-five recruiting class. The Sooners attacked the portal with some serious intensity bringing in impact transfers on both sides of the ball.

It’s now time for the world to at least get a glimpse of some of these new Sooners while getting a chance to see how the returning players improved from last year.

Here are our top five storylines heading into the spring game.

Anton Harrison scouting report ahead of 2023 NFL Draft

Anton Harrison is next up in Shaun Calderon’s scouting report series ahead of the 2023 NFL draft.

Oklahoma offensive tackle Anton Harrison is next up on our scouting report series ahead of the 2023 NFL draft. The former All-Big 12 offensive lineman has been an integral piece to the Oklahoma offense over the last few years.

Harrison saw significant time as a true freshman despite not being listed as the official starter, totaling 333 combined snaps over a nine-game span. The Oklahoma lineman took over on a full-time basis at the start of the 2021 season and never looked back.

The majority of his collegiate snaps occurred at left tackle, but he did start the 2022 season opener mostly playing right tackle before ultimately moving back to the left side for the rest of the year.

This article is going to provide you with an educated opinion on the pros and cons of selecting the former Sooner, but before we get started, a quick reminder that unless noted otherwise, all of the grades and individual rankings that are included are my own opinions.

Many within the fanbase believe Harrison could be an ideal Round 1 target if the Titans trade back from their original slot, so let’s find out what exactly makes him such an intriguing prospect.

ESPN selects Kelly Gregg as Oklahoma’s best ‘late-round find’ in the NFL Draft

According to ESPN’s Dave Wilson, Kelly Gregg is the best player to be drafted out of Oklahoma in the fourth round or later.

The Oklahoma Sooners have a rich history in the game of college football. For decades, they’ve been one of the sport’s best programs. They’ve had a number of talented players find their way to the NFL over the years.

The 2023 NFL draft is a week away, and players like [autotag]Anton Harrison[/autotag] and [autotag]Marvin Mims[/autotag] are expected to go in the first two rounds of the draft. Teams are expected to hit on their picks in the first three rounds. There’s a premium placed on the top 100 picks. What has separated the best drafting teams from the rest isn’t their ability to hit on the premium picks, but finding the gems on day three.

Rounds four through seven is where scout and general manager evaluations can really set teams apart as an organization. Like when the New England Patriots take Tom Brady in the sixth or when San Francisco selected Iowa tight end George Kittle in the fifth.

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

For the Oklahoma Sooners, they haven’t had many late-round draft gems. Several selected in recent seasons have a chance to be draft steals, like [autotag]Rhamondre Stevenson[/autotag] to the Patriots, but his career is still getting going.

ESPN went through each of the Power Five schools and selected their best “late round find” since 1994. For Oklahoma, Dave Wilson selected former nose tackle Kelly Gregg.

At 6-foot, 320-pounds, Gregg was a force at Oklahoma in his senior year with 117 tackles and 23 tackles for loss, still an OU record. But the NFL wasn’t impressed with his measurables. He was drafted by Cincinnati but waived, then spent time on the Bengals’ practice squad, signed with Philly and was waived, signed to Baltimore’s practice squad and played in NFL Europe. He became the Ravens’ starting nose tackle after Tony Siragusa left and ended up starting for eight years for Baltimore and one with Kansas City, retiring in 2011. Pro Football Focus named him to its All-Pro second team in 2009. — Dave Wilson, ESPN

Gregg was a part of some of the best defenses in the NFL during his time with the Baltimore Ravens. As the anchor to the Ravens’ defensive front, Gregg started 124 games, recording 19.5 sacks for Baltimore and 533 total tackles.

With Gregg at nose tackle, the Ravens finished top 10 in defense eight times and top three in scoring defense three times. They had the No. 1 scoring defense in the NFL in 2006, allowing just 12.6 points per game.
