AEW Dynamite results 11/22/23: 3 men get 3 points in Continental Classic openers

Also on AEW Dynamite, MJF and Samoa Joe decided when their world title match will happen.

The AEW Continental Classic gets underway tonight with three matches that should be the highlight of the Thanksgiving Eve episode of AEW Dynamite from Chicago.

While you can check out the full list of participants and how they’re split between two groups, the short version is that the six wrestlers in the Gold League all have their first round robin matches on Dynamite.

The matchups are:

Each match has a 20-minute time limit and will award three points for a win and one for a draw, with zero points for a loss. Everyone is banned from ringside, so ostensibly, that means no interference from LFI, BCC, BCG or whatever letters you use to describe Lethal’s group.

In other somewhat weird news, Christian Cage has promised to “rechristen” Luchasaurus and Nick Wayne, and what exactly that entails, we honestly do not know. We’ll also see a championship acceptance speech from “Timeless” Toni Storm after her title win at Full Gear, plus we’ll hear from AEW World Champion MJF. No word on whether the Devil may show up too.

That sounds like a full night of Dynamite to us. Let’s light the fuse on this one.

AEW Dynamite results from Chicago:

Swerve Strickland scores the first 3 points of the Continental Classic, pinning Jay Lethal

Despite his heel status, Swerve hears some chants as the bell rings. The announcers put over the idea that he’s somewhat the worse for wear after his Texas Death match at Full Gear, and yeah, he should be.

Lethal gets in enough offense to tease his strut and faux flip off the fans, but Swerve is able to respond with some offense that targets Lethal’s left knee. Lethal is smartly focusing on Strickland’s right arm and shoulder, which is taped up.

A nice German suplex by Swerve is answered by a shoulderbreaker, and both men are down for the broadcast to head to side-by-side ads. A superplex has Strickland looking good after the break, and his rolling flatliner flows right into a brainbuster for a near fall.

Lethal offers a strong response that ends with a long flying elbow off the top for a two count. A couple of counters leads to a stretch muffler by Swerve, who then gets rolled up for two and stuck in an STF. Lethal connects with a pump kick , but Strickland sees the Lethal Injection coming.

A dropkick, the House Call and the Swerve Stomp finish it off, giving Strickland the first three points of the tournament.

Orange Cassidy wants to make an announcement but is rudely interrupted by Wheeler Yuta, who also has some verbal venom for Hook and Katsuyori Shibata. And then Renee Paquette tells Orange that they’re out of time.

MJF and Samoa Joe set the date for their world title match

A banged up MJF, who is walking with a cane, and Adam Cole, still on crutches, make their way to the ring. MJF helpfully gets a chair so Cole can sit. That’s true friendship.

The AEW champ brags about beating Jay White on one leg but also says Switchblade is one of the best pro wrestlers in the world. After reminding us of his accomplishments, though, MJF says he’s the greatest AEW world champion of all time.

Still, none of that would be possible without his brochacho for life, and Cole does indeed want to do some story time. He’s excited to be back in Chicago and that he and MJF are still ROH tag team champ. Cole has some bad news, though: He has a long road back from his ankle injury, though he promises to do the work he needs to do to get back to his best.

In the meantime, Cole is concerned about MJF since everyone is gunning for him and the Devil and his goons are still out there. MJF tells Cole not to worry because he’ll hunt the Devil down … but the Devil appears quickly on the screen with an evil laugh.

Samoa Joe figures that’s the best time to join the duo in the ring, saying it’s time for celebration. He’s there to ensure Max honors the deal they made that would give Joe a world title shot, but MJF says no, except in much more crass language that gets beeped out.

Cole intervenes and says that while Joe is indeed a killer, skipping out on the title shot is something the old MJF would have done. “Max, be a man of your word,” he implores.

MJF takes an oblique shot at CM Punk before saying he’ll take on Joe right here in Chicago, but Joe says absolutely not. Joe wants the best, fully healed version of MJF, and he figures by Worlds End, he’ll be nice and chipper to defend the title.

That makes MJF almost incredulous since Worlds End is in his hometown, and he tells Joe it’s a deal. They shake hands, but after MJF tries to get in one last verbal jab, Joe calls Max “my property” and says he’ll be watching the champ’s back until Worlds End … when he’ll beat him for the title in front of everyone he loves.

Orange Cassidy and friends get a Very Nice, Very Evil boost

Orange Cassidy gets on the mic before the match can start and says he has a Thanksgiving surprise: Danhausen is back! The heels are unimpressed and try to get the jump on our heroes before the bell.

Hook takes a beating during commercials and is in desperate need of a tag. He manages a t-bone suplex on Angelo Parker and gets Cassidy into the fray. A big powerslam by Jake Hager stops Orange in his tracks but only for a second until he can hit Stundog Millionaire and tag in Katsuyori Shibata.

Shibata vs. everyone works out surprisingly well until it doesn’t. Just when it appears he’s in big trouble, Danhausen produces Hager’s beloved purple bucket hat and curses him to boot.

Hook and Shibata get submissions locked in at the same time, Cassidy Orange Punches Hager off the apron, and Parker, who is somehow legal through all this, taps out.

Cole tells Paquette he can’t wait to get back to doing what he does beat, but when Roderick Strong and The Kingdom arrive, Cole has little time for his nagging and tells Roddy in no uncertain terms that they aren’t best friends any more and he wants Strong to leave him the hell alone.

Christian Cage gives his henchmen new names but runs afoul of Adam Copeland again

Christian Cage is accompanied to the ring by Nick Wayne and Luchasaurus and tells Chicago to be quiet. He says a true champion is gracious in victory and humble in defeat, noting that things didn’t go his way at Full Gear … but he did not lose that match.

Wayne didn’t either. Luchasaurus lost that match. Harsh.

Cage says that’s unacceptable, and the only way to wash the stench of losing away is to recreate Wayne and Luchasaurus in his image. He tells the dinosaur man to take a knee, which he does reluctantly, and says he will be known from here on out as Killswitch.

Wayne takes a knee quickly, but Cage tells him to rise because he’s the golden boy, the one who reminds Christian of himself. His new name is “The Prodigy” Nick Wayne.

Wayne’s mom arrives in the ring, irritating Cage, who berates Mrs. Wayne for being a waitress and insults Nick’s late father. He tells Shayna to leave, but Killswitch comes to her defense. Christian yells at him to get back on his knees, then smacks him.

Finally, Cage threatens to expose Killswitch’s face, pushing him into Shayna and knocking her down. Nick goes under the ring to find a steel chair, the another.

He gives the chairs to Cage, who in turn hands one to Killswitch and orders him to give Shayna the Con-Chair-To. The dinosaur man struggles with the decision before Adam Copeland has enough, spearing Nick.

Killswitch saves Cage, so Copeland spears Nick instead and follows with an Impaler. Copeland sets Nick up for the Con-Chair-To and doesn’t hesitate to deliver it.

The ex-members of the JAS talk to Paquette, and they’re all out of sorts except for Anna Jay, who just seems to be upset with all of them. And Parker is distracted by his flirtations with Ruby Soho.

Jay White takes a shortcut to get 3 points against Rush in their Continental Classic opener

The referee reminds The Gunns they need to hit the bricks since no one is allowed at ringside for the Continental Classic matches. That might hurt since Rush controls the early action and takes it to Jay White in and out of the ring.

Rush gets out a long cable but is warned not to use it, so he returns to his heavy chops. White tries to give as good as he gets, but Rush is going to win this game, and he stomps White down in the corner as well. He kicks Switchblade in the face and does the Tranquilo pose.

An ad break finds White now in control afterward, but Rush rallies to look for his version of Three Amigos, ending with a brainbuster once White interrupts it. White is covered but manages to kick out at two.

White takes control again as the chop battle is resumed. Forearms are flying as well, so White thumbs his foe in the eye and answers Rush’s knee strike with a uranage for a close two count.

After a German suplex has Rush thinking thrust kick, White proves he has an answer in the form of a dragon screw. Rush responds with a belly-to-belly overhead throw into the turnbuckles. An elbow strike is on target too, but White sees the Bull’s Horns coming.

The referee nearly takes a bump, and when he covers up to protect himself, White lands a low blow. Rush is a sitting duck for a Blade Runner, and White has himself three points.

Paquette and RJ City are on the stage to present the AEW Women’s World Championship to “Timeless” Toni Storm in the manner of an awards show acceptance speech. Mariah May presents her with the title belt before Storm puts on glasses and takes her notes out.

She thanks “Anthony Khan and the wonderful people at Warner Discovery,” and works through it as they try to play her off. She also thanks the little Toni Storms, says they won’t take her spot and tells them to stay in school, maybe learn a trade.

Cue the standing ovation! But Storm hasn’t cleared out yet when Skye Blue pushes past her on her way to the ring for a match.

Skye Blue gets a big win as a battle for the heart of Ruby Soho rages on

Skye Blue might be competing in front of her home fans, but she’s the one taking the big bumps early. Ruby Soho takes one too as she’s kicked off the apron, and Anna Jay gets some help from Cool Hand Ang and Daddy Magic to take control on the outside.

A superplex/powerbomb combo is a fun way to return from commercials. Soho takes a ridiculous head kick on the outside as she’s caught between her teammate Saraya and Cool Hand Ang.

Back in the ring, Anna almost wins it before Soho breaks up her pin on Skye. More arguing breaks out between Sraya and Daddy Magic, as Soho is knocked off the apron into Ang’s hands.

Blue nails Anna with Skyefall, and with Soho caught in the drama on the outside, she can’t prevent the three count.

Wardlow takes a break from working out to tell Paquette he’ll get MJF on his own time, then headbutts AR Fox for daring to offer some advice.

Jon Moxley gets a hard fought Continental Classic victory over Mark Briscoe

This is the first ever singles match between Mark Briscoe and Jon Moxley, and we will go past the top of the hour to get it in, according to the broadcast. Both men come out swinging, with Briscoe taking control after a dropkick to knock Mox to the floor and a cannonball off the apron.

Briscoe thinks Froggy Bow but sees Moxley run away and open back up with strikes. A big boot takes Briscoe to the floor as we go picture-in-picture one last time for the night.

The announcers are surprised that it’s Briscoe bleeding first in this one, but it isn’t stopping him from mounting some impressive offense and countering a King Kong lariat for a two count. Briscoe is caught temporarily in a submission but makes it over for a rope break.

Up top they go, where Briscoe smashes a right hand and bites Moxley on the face. Mark also no sells a Paradigm Shift to land a dropkick, leaving both men on the mat.

Brsicoe’s Death Valley Driver has him thinking Froggy Bow, which finds the mark but isn’t enough to keep Moxley down for three. A King Kong Lariat answers a Jay Driller attempt, but Mox is incredulous when his opponent kicks out after a Death Rider.

Moxley tries for a bulldog choke but nearly gets rolled up for the pin. They battle to the middle of the ring again with strikes. Mox hits a stomp, then another Death Rider, and this time it’s too much even for Briscoe.

AEW Rampage results 10/27/23: Santana-Ortiz grudge match, Don Callis Family grows

AEW Rampage also found a title challenger for Hikaru Shida, and it’s a bit of a pleasant surprise.

Former tag team partner turned enemies is a pretty common trope in pro wrestling. Still, there’s something about the enmity between Mike Santana and Ortiz that hits a little bit different.

From the very beginning of AEW, Santana and Ortiz weren’t just a tag team, they were essentially brothers. They went through a ton both on their own and as part of several factions.

But as they say, that was then and this is now. Santana and Ortiz absolutely seem to detest each other, and they’re going to have to settle things in the ring. As one does.

Let’s get into some Rampage, shall we?

AEW Rampage results:

  • Mike Santana def. Ortiz by pinfall in a No Holds Barred grudge match; after the bell, Santana offers a fist bump but finds Ortiz wants no part of it, and the same appears to be true of Ortiz reacting to Sonjay Dutt
  • A video package promotes MJF vs. Kenny Omega on this week’s episode of Collision, and we hear from both men and a number of others — including Jay White, who wishes Omega good luck, perhaps sarcastically, and Don Callis, who makes a futile effort to recruit MJF
  • Kris Statlander tries to find out what’s been going on with Skye Blue and Willow Nightingale, and the real issue is that Skye hasn’t been the same since getting hit with the black mist
  • Kip Sabian disses Philly sports teams until a returning Mark Briscoe decides he’s heard enough and clears him out of the ring
  • Renee Paquette talks to the former Jericho Appreciation Society members, and Anna Jay asks them all to back her up, but bickering breaks out when Callis appears to make a business proposition to Matt Menard and Angelo Parker, who also gets a visit from Ruby Soho
  • Abadon def. Anna Jay, Skye Blue and Willow Nightingale by pinning Anna Jay to earn a title shot against Hikaru Shida on Collision
  • “Dammit Max!” The Acclaimed and Daddy Ass wants to invite everyone to National 69 Day in eight days, but Max Caster takes it too far, as always, to invite MJF

AEW Rampage results 09/08/23: Joe gets one step closer to MJF

Joe will now face Penta El Zero Miedo in a semifinal match on Collision.

It’s tournament time again in AEW, and unlike college hoops, that doesn’t mean it’s March but rather early September on the way to Grand Slam in New York City. Two important matches will take place tonight on AEW Rampage to set up the semifinals on Collision tomorrow night.

The tournament winner gets to face MJF for the AEW World Championship at Grand Slam, and while the person with the best storyline (Roderick Strong) already advanced on Dynamite, you can’t count out the others still in the field. We’ll see who makes the final four from this particular hour of Rampage.

There’s also an intriguing six-woman tag match and a high profile tag team match, so let’s not waste any more time on the preliminaries.

AEW Rampage results:

  • Penta El Zero Miedo def. Jay Lethal by pinfall in a Grand Slam World Title Eliminator Tournament quarterfinal match, despite attempted assistance by Lethal’s crew, who all end up getting ejected from ringside
  • At the announce table, Chris Jericho is asked about the animosity between him and Sammy Guevara, who comes out so they can both say they want to punch each other in the face, and they agree to have a match at Grand Slam in New York

AEW Rampage results 09/01/23: Dark Order punches their ticket for All Out

See how Dark Order won a spot at All Out, plus a fiery women’s division main event on AEW Rampage from Chicago.

Facing the unenviable task of booking pay-per-view cards on consecutive weeks, AEW is certainly making the best of it. Even with some, ahem, complications affecting the availability of its biggest Chicago-born star, things are plowing ahead toward All Out, and AEW Rampage still has something to say on that front.

If nothing else, Rampage will find challengers to everyone’s favorite brochados, MJF and Adam Page. Let’s not waste any time, either, since the match to determine them is up first.

AEW Rampage results:

  • Dark Order (Alex Reynolds and John Silver) win the Tag Team Battle Royale to determine the No. 1 contenders for the ROH World Tag Team Championship, earning a title match against Adam Cole and MJF at All Out
  • Aussie Open, who did not win the battle royale, have words with Chris Jericho at the announce table that elevates to fists; Sammy Guevara arrives with Jericho’s baseball bat (Floyd) to run them off
  • Mike Santana takes us back to the beginning of his time here at AEW, when his dad passed away, then flashes forward to his injury at Blood and Guts 2022 before finishing by saying he has more story to tell
  • Nick Wayne and El Hijo del Vikingo def. Kip Sabian and Gringo Loco by pinfall
  • Johnny TV is in charge of QTV while QT Marshall is away defending his AAA title, and he promised big changes

AEW Dynamite results 08/09/23: BCC runs roughshod, Shida retains, JAS disintegrates

AEW Dynamite from Columbus also set up some more matches for All In London later this month.

After last week’s AEW Dynamite 200, what’s in store for the encore? We’ll find out tonight on Dynamite from the home of the Buckeyes, Columbus.

We know there will be plenty of juicy in-ring action. Hikaru Shida, fresh off winning the AEW Women’s World Championship last week, will defend it for the first time against Anna Jay. The Hardys will battle for brotherly supremacy against the Young Bucks. And the Lucha Bros., who have been caught up in an ongoing beef with the Blackpool Combat Club, will go up against two of that group’s finest in Claudio Castagnoli and Jon Moxley.

Oh, and Rob Van Dam will ride again, trying to take the FTW Championship from Jack “Don’t Call Me Jungle Boy Any More” Perry.

As for non-fighting segments of interest, there figure to be at least a few of those too. The Jericho Appreciation Society, now appropriately concerned about the actions of the man they are supposed to be appreciating, is having a mandatory meeting. We’re invited too, we presume.

We’ll hear from MJF and Adam Cole, who seem to be on a path to the main event of All In, where they will face each other, without either of them turning on the other. At least not yet.

And speaking of All In, the biggest show in AEW history, we’re now a week closer than we were during Dynamite 200. Only the aforementioned MJF-Cole match has been revealed so far, but could there be other bouts revealed tonight? We’ll have to wait and see, but that’s definitely possible.

AEW Dynamite results from Columbus:

With the Jericho Appreciation Society gathered in the ring, Daddy Magic somewhat reluctantly introduces the group’s leader, Chris Jericho. He says he came to the ring as their friend, but Daniel Garcia asks him to stop talking and listen. Garcia is still upset about last week and reminds Jericho that he sacrificed for Chris every single time … so why won’t Jericho choose them? Daniel does his dance and then leaves.

Not usually the talkative one, Jake Hager says he liked that hat but no longer appreciates Jericho. Chris tries to stop the bleeding by addressing Anna Jay and Tay Melo, but Tay says she will come back next year after having her baby and become a champion without his help. Anna admits Jericho has helped them, but he’s helped himself more, and she needs to be selfish as she goes for the title tonight.

Angelo Parker says he doesn’t want to do this, and that he loves being a sports entertainer. But he’s given Jericho everything and has nothing left to give.

What about Daddy Magic? Matt Menard says Jericho was his childhood hero and that the last 18 months have been nothing but a dream for him. Alas, he walks away too.

That leaves only Sammy Guevara, who says he won’t walk out on Jericho. He does, however, say Chris has a lot of things to work out, and when he does, maybe Sammy will be there.

Renee Paquette catches up with Jericho, but so does Don Callis. Jericho says he has a decision about whether he will join Don’s family and will announce it next week.

The Young Bucks def. The Hardys by pinfall

The Bucks have really not done much tag team wrestling this year — this is only their third two-on-two match of 2023. That’s a fun framing for watching the Hardys do well early on (though they haven’t been doing that much either, with Jeff only recently returned to the fold).

The Jacksons take the upper hand after Risky Business, and Nick Jackson dives to the floor over his brother to take out both Hardys. Matt and Jeff get things turned around during picture-in-picture, and Jeff nearly pins Nick with the Whisper in the Wind.

Here comes the superkick party, and both Hardys are invited. The Bucks hit a variation on the 3-D but can’t put Jeff away. The Hardys rally with twin Twists of Fate, and Jeff hits a Swanton Bomb on Nick that forces Matt Jackson to make the save.

After a scramble among all four men, Matt Hardy looks for a Twist of Fate, but the Bucks counter with a BTE Trigger that wraps up a victory.

The victorious Young Bucks ask for a microphone but only get out FTR before the tag team champions head their way. The two teams have a bit of a discussion, which the fans like, before Matt Jackson simply says “All In.” FTR hold their titles up, so we’re saying that’s challenge accepted.

All In will also have a four-way match for the AEW Women’s World Championship, with Toni Storm guaranteed a spot since she is owed a rematch. Or we think that’s right.

MJF is dismayed that Adam Cole’s outing for the night is a trampoline park, but the world champ lights up when he discovers there is dodgeball, and he amuses himself by eliminating kids with extreme prejudice.

Cole tells him to stop, but when a girl calls them nerds and flips them the bird, he relents and tells Max he can make one more throw.

Jon Moxley says he hopes the Best Friends learned their lesson and that Trent’s mom got the flowers they sent. Claudio Castagnoli and Wheeler Yuta taunt Pac for the injury that will keep him out past All In, which is pretty cold.

Jack Perry def. Rob Van Dam by pinfall to retain the FTW Championship

Perry attacks RVD before the bell, ’cause he’s a heel and all, but Van Dam is able to match him move for move once he gets settled in. RVD hits his spinning legdrop off the apron, getting the fans fired up and leading us to picture-in-picture.

Chairs come into play as well, with Perry trying to throw one at RVD and nailing the ref instead. Perry goes tumbling through a table on the floor, and the ref might be hurt for real.

RVD hits the Five-Star Frog Splash, but by the time Aubrey Edwards arrives to be the new ref, Perry has time to kick out. That allows Perry to do all the cheating: hitting a low blow, hurling RVD into a chair in the corner and pulling the tights to get the pin. All legal in FTW rules, eh.

Lucha Bros. tell Paquette the BCC should be the Blackpool Coward Club and that they’ll get some revenge for Pac tonight.

MJF and Cole come to the ring, where the champ successfully manages to say the Midwest is his favorite place without God striking him down. Max thinks Adam wants a promo battle and starts going in, then backs off saying he’s totally misread the situation.

But Cole says people like them as a tag team, so he suggests they go after titles just as meaningful to him: the ROH World Tag Team Championship. It’s the only ROH title Cole never won, and he convinces MJF to challenge Aussie Open for those belts on the Zero Hour pre-show.

Seems like the segment is going to end on a happy note, but Roderick Strong comes out to protest. MJF goes off on an extended rant on Roddy, who gets upset and is consoled by The Kingdom.

Cole gets mad at MJF, who looks furious, but with the fans chanting “hug it out,” they do exactly that, and Cole runs off to check on Roddy.

Blackpool Combat Club (Claudio Castagnoli and Jon Moxley) def. Lucha Bros. by pinfall

Penta and Rey Fenix slip in from the back side of the ring to hit superkicks and tandem dives to the floor before the bell even rings. Mox manages to right the ship, pulling off a double DDT on both the brothers.

Wheeler Yuta sneaks in a belt shot while Edwards is occupied, but Fenix kicks out anyway. He later gets hit with a two-man spike piledriver but manages to kick out again.

All four men start exchanging signature moves, leaving them all flat on their backs. The fans reward them with a “this is awesome” chant.

Mox and Penta start chopping the heck out of each other. Alex Abrahantes prevents Yuta from interfering again, and Fenix dives out on Wheeler, but Moxley unmasks Penta and pins him while he’s trying to cover his face.

After the bell, BCC beats the crap out of the Lucha Bros., while Claudio puts on Penta’s mask and mocks him.

What about Kenny Omega at All In? He’s going to talk to JR about it next week, apparently.

The Mogul Embassy is still out here claiming Darby Allin is to blame for AR Fox’s turn, but Darby comes out to tell his side of the story. He also thinks it’s silly that Fox is made Allin put in a good word for Nick Wayne.

But while Fox has made some new friends, Darby has friends too. The lights go out, then go back on to find Sting in the ring with his trusty baseball bat. After beating up a couple of people, including Swerve Strickland, Sting points at the All In sign. Seems like a challenge is being made. And indeed it’s made official shortly after: Allin and Sting vs. Swerve and Fox in a Coffin Match.

Hikaru Shida def. Anna Jay by pinfall to retain the AEW Women’s World Championship

This is two Dynamite main events in a row for Shida, which is pretty cool. It’s less cool that we go to picture-in-picture so quickly, but hey.

Anna gets some offense in during the tiny picture, hammering Shida repeatedly to the body in the corner. Menard and Parker are still out there supporting Anna, and they stop the champ from jumping off a chair on the outside.

That leads to Jay applying the Queenslayer, and though Shida looks like she may be in trouble, she makes the ropes to break the hold. With Anna trying for the Queenslayer again, Shida falls back from the top rope and follows with a Falcon Arrow for the near fall.

Shida hits the katana, Parker tries to do … something to help Anna, but it doesn’t work and the champ retains.

AEW Rampage results 08/04/23: Tearing up the parking lot

Best Friends took on Blackpool Combat Club in a Parking Lot Fight. See how it turned out in our AEW Rampage results.

Settling things in the ring? Anyone can do that. Settling beefs in the parking lot? Now you’re talking Best Friends’ language.

The problem is, even though they know their way around a Parking Lot Fight, they’ve never had one against the Blackpool Combat Club, a group that lives and breathes violence.

That could prove to be a big difference in the Parking Lot Fight tonight in the main event of Rampage. Or they might rally to the moment, but there’s only one way to find out: We need to dive into this episode.

AEW Rampage results: Jungle Boy passes pre-Forbidden Door test

AEW Rampage also featured a first round match in the Women’s Owen Hart Cup Tournament.

If you’ve never watched New Japan Pro-Wrestling before, that’s OK. But it would probably be a good idea to watch this episode of AEW Rampage before Forbidden Door this Sunday night.

That’s because there’s a whole bunch of NJPW talent on tonight’s show, which is fitting since they will also be a big part of the second annual supershow in Toronto. Also, MJF will be on tonight’s show, a first for the AEW World Champion.

So even though Rampage has slipped to third in the pecking order of AEW shows, this should be one hour that’s worth watching. Let’s see what we’ve got.

AEW Dynamite results 06/07/23: Orange still golden, but are The Gunns?

AEW Dynamite from Colorado Springs featured an AEW International Championship match between Orange Cassidy and Swerve Strickland.

Orange Cassidy has been magic during his AEW International Championship reign, defending the belt tirelessly despite the fact that he’d rather not wrestle at all if he had his druthers. But with all due respect to the wrestling maneuver of the same name, Swerve Strickland could be the magic killer tonight on AEW Dynamite from Colorado Springs.

Swerve was popular was a fan favorite but has really seemed to hit his groove since embracing his villainous side, not to mention dropping the dead weight (sorry, but it’s true) that was the Mogul Affiliates and joining forces with The Embassy. If someone is going to end Cassidy’s run prior to Forbidden Door, it could very well be Strickland — plus it would be fun seeing Swerve have to defend the title against someone from NJPW later this month.

Another champ, Kris Statlander, will also be in action tonight. The AEW Women’s World Champion should get a pretty nice contest from Anna Jay, who has been impressive in recent appearances.

We’ll hear from MJF, probably about how he’d prefer not to defend his title at Forbidden Door (though he’ll likely be forced to do so). Tony Khan has an announcement to make about the main event for the first episode of AEW: Collision, coming up ever so quickly on Saturday, June 17. And the ever popular “JungleHook” team of Jack Perry and Hook will join forces once again, which should prove popular with the fans on hand in Colorado Springs.

AEW Dynamite results: Stacked Detroit card ends in big betrayal

Two titles were also on the line in the Motor City, but did either one change hands?

Unlike many pro wrestling stables, The Elite and Blackpool Combat Club don’t really have designated leaders. They’re more collections of equals in many ways. But Kenny Omega and Jon Moxley are certainly the frontmen when necessary, and that’s extremely relevant to this week’s episode of AEW Dynamite in Detroit.

See, the beef between the two groups has gotten to the point where something dramatic needs to be done to settle it. And well, Omega and Moxley stepping in against each other in a steel cage fits the bill.

That’s a spectacular main event for free TV by any reckoning, but Little Caesars Arena will also be treated to a pair of title bouts: Orange Cassidy will defend his International Championship against Daniel Garcia, and House of Black will put their World Trios Championship on the line against Bandido and Best Friends under their unique “House Rules.”

AEW Dynamite preview: Omega, Mox settle things inside a Steel Cage

A Steel Cage match between two of AEW’s biggest stars, two title matches and much more highlight the card from Detroit.

Sometimes you just need to settle things inside a steel cage. Well, in pro wrestling, anyway, we don’t recommend using that method for resolving run of the mill disputes. Happily, Jon Moxley and Kenny Omega are indeed pro wrestlers, two of the best, in fact, so they can go that route on this week’s episode of AEW Dynamite in Detroit.

The fun part of their shared history is that a Steel Cage match doesn’t even represent an uptick in violence for them, considering they’ve already had an Unsanctioned Lights Out match and an Exploding Barbed Wire Deathmatch. But the ongoing enmity between Omega’s Elite and Moxley’s Blackpool Combat Club more or less demands something dramatic at this point, and this qualifies — on free TV, no less.

Yet this isn’t the only match worth noting for this week, as Tony Khan’s claims that this is a PPV-caliber card aren’t off base. Rey Fenix and Claudio Castagnoli will face off in a Double Jeopardy match where shots at each of their ROH titles are at stake. House of Black will defend their World Trios Championship under their own unique House Rules for the first time against Bandido and Best Friends. And the most workmanlike champion in major pro wrestling, Orange Cassidy, will put up his International Championship against a very real threat in Daniel Garcia.

Plus there’s a No Holds Barred match between friends turned enemies Julia Hart and Anna Jay, and we’ll hear from both Christian Cage and FTR. Stacked, you say? Sure seems like it to us.

That means if you won’t be at Little Caesars Arena in person, you’ll want to be watching at 8 p.m. ET on TBS. Failing that, we’ll have full results and all the relevant details from Dynamite here on Wrestling Junkie later tonight.
