Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes excited to test his ankle at practice on Wednesday

#Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes spoke to reporters about his ankle injury ahead of practice on Wednesday.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is hoping to have a better idea of where he’s at in his recovery from a high ankle sprain on Wednesday.

Andy Reid confirmed that Mahomes would practice, potentially in full capacity to start off the practice week. It was certainly a surprise, given how bad the injury looked when it occurred during the AFC divisional round tilt with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

When Mahomes addressed reporters on Wednesday, it was the first time since his postgame press conference on Saturday. He provided everyone with an update on his ankle.

“It’s doing good,” Mahomes said. “A few days of treatment, a few days of rehab. Excited to get on the practice field and kind of test it out and see where I’m at. But it’s feeling good so far.”

He took reporters through the moments following the game and what the rest of his week looked like in terms of testing, rehab and recovery work.

“Yeah, I was able to do some extra testing just to make sure everything was good the night after the game,” Mahomes said. “And then get a few things done to help the treatment kind of start off. The next few days have kind of been an all-day thing where you’re either doing treatment or rehab or watching film. I had to take Brittany (Mahomes) a few places with me, so I could be around the kids a little bit, but it’s a full-day thing where you’re trying to make sure you’re obviously prepared for the Bengals and a good football team mentally and physically.”

This isn’t the first injury that Mahomes has dealt with to his lower body in the NFL. Asked how this compares to the other injuries, Mahomes first described the toughest injury he faced — his turf toe injury during the 2020 playoffs.

“Probably my toe would be the toughest injury,” Mahomes said. “I remember when I had my toe, I had to curl my toes when I walked. So that was probably the toughest injury I’ve had to play through. But I’ve dealt with a lot of them and you kind of just have to get yourself to focus on what needs to be focused on and that’s the team that you’re playing. You prepare your body all week and when you get to Sunday you focus on playing the football game. That’s what I’m going to try to do this week.”

As for how this ankle sprain compares to the one he suffered against the Jaguars in Week 1 of the 2019 season, Mahomes says it’s a similar injury, but it will present a different challenge.

“Yeah, it’s very similar, just a different ankle,” Mahomes said. “Especially, different ankles at the quarterback position, you’re playing off of and throwing off different stuff. So the last one was the leg that I landed on, so I had to find ways to throw where I could land and keep it in the right spot. This time I’ll have to find ways to push off and still make throws the right way. Definitely similar in a sense, but different limitations that I’ll have to work through.”

What exactly his limitations might be in the AFC Championship Game against the Bengals remain to be seen. Right now, Mahomes says he’ll continue to push himself to be at his best for Sunday.

“I think we’ll see throughout the week,” Mahomes said. “I haven’t got to go out in practice yet and put myself in those positions. I’ve done limited stuff in kind of a small box of what I could do. But I’ll push it today and then the next day and then the next day again to see what I can do — to not reaggravate the injury obviously — but to push it to see what I’ll be able to do on Sunday.”

Latest injury update on Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes’ ankle

According to multiple reports, #Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes’ MRI revealed a high ankle sprain.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes was scheduled for additional tests on his right ankle on Sunday after injuring it during the AFC divisional round game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid spoke about the injury after the game, downplaying it as just a “tweak.” He confirmed that Mahomes received an X-Ray during the game that came back negative for any breaks or fractures.

According to reports from both NFL Network and ESPN, the MRI results revealed a high ankle sprain, but no additional damage.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said to expect Mahomes to be very sore and limited during the course of the practice week.

After the game, Mahomes was insistent that he’d be good to play in the AFC Championship Game. This isn’t the first time that he’s played through a high ankle sprain either. In Week 1 of the 2019 NFL season against the Jaguars, Mahomes suffered an ankle sprain, also finishing the game.

That ankle sprain hindered him at times throughout the early season, but he was able to play through it without any significant drop-off in his play. His mobility, obviously, took the biggest hit. A good sign, however, is that just like that occasion, Mahomes was spotted after the AFC divisional round win without any brace or boot on his right foot.

Chiefs LG Joe Thuney dealing with ankle injury vs. Broncos

#Chiefs LG Joe Thuney tried to tough out his ankle injury, but he has since been replaced by Nick Allegretti.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbwa53mtds520q2 player_id=01eqbvhghtkmz2182d image=]

Update: Thuney has been ruled out.

The second half of the Week 17 game against the Denver Broncos didn’t get started the way the Kansas City Chiefs had hoped.

After an incomplete pass to a wide-open Skyy Moore on second down, Chiefs LG Joe Thuney suffered an apparent injury on the ensuing play. The Broncos pushed the pocked and several bodies piled up as they tried to get to Patrick Mahomes. When players began to get up, Thuney remained down on the field.

Thuney was helped off the field by Creed Humphrey and Trey Smith. The training staff worked on his ankle on the sideline — perhaps the same ankle that he injured against the Buffalo Bills back in Week 6. That injury has nagged him all season and he eventually missed some time with it in Week 12 and Week 13. They eventually retapped his ankle and he was out on the field for the ensuing offensive series.

They’d eventually replace Thuney with Nick Allegretti and rule Thuney questionable to return to the game.

The fact that Thuney was able to return to the game is a positive sign as far as his outlook for the postseason is concerned. I think it’s a safe bet that at a minimum, Thuney will be held out of the Week 18 finale against the Las Vegas Raiders next week.

Broncos RB Mike Boone has a potentially season-ending injury

Broncos RB Mike Boone suffered a high ankle sprain against the Chiefs.

Mike Boone’s season is probably over.

The running back left Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs in the first half after suffering an ankle injury. Before leaving the contest, Boone rushed three times for two yards and caught two passes for 27 yards.

After an eventual 34-28 loss, KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis reported that Boone suffered a “serious high ankle sprain.” It’s the same injury — and the same ankle — that sidelined the Denver Broncos’ running back for four weeks earlier this season.

With just four games remaining this year, Boone’s season is likely over (Denver was eliminated from playoff contention on Sunday). The running back totaled 198 yards from scrimmage in nine games this year. Boone is now set to become a free agent in 2023.

Elsewhere on the injury front for the Broncos, quarterback Russell Wilson has entered the NFL’s concussion protocol. If the quarterback passes through the protocol’s five phases, it’s possible that he could return in time for Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals, but it’s probably more likely that Brett Rypien is set to start in Week 15.

Chiefs RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire suffers ankle injury vs. Chargers

#Chiefs RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire has been ruled questionable to return against the #Chargers with an ankle injury.

[sendtonews_embed video_id=”JGMt1dANJp-2375764-7498″]

The turf at SoFi Stadium seems to have claimed its first victim.

Kansas City Chiefs RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire got to work early in the Week 11 game against the Los Angeles Chargers on “Sunday Night Football.” He had two carries for nine yards. On the second carry, he got up limping to the sideline afterward.

He was spotted getting worked on by the training staff on the table and the team quickly ruled him as questionable to return to the game with an ankle injury. He was also later shown on the broadcast limping heavily into the tunnel for imaging on his injured ankle.

The Chiefs typically keep three running backs and a fullback active. If Edwards-Helaire is unable to return to the game, the team will have to rely on Isiah Pacheco, Jerick McKinnon and Michael Burton for the remainder of the game. Ronald Jones was among those made inactive for the game.

Report: Pete Werner had ankle surgery, Saints optimistic he’ll play again in 2022

The Saints are without starting linebacker Pete Werner after surgery on his injured ankle, but they’re optimistic he’ll play again in 2022:

Here’s another New Orleans Saints injury update. NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill first reported that linebacker Pete Werner underwent ankle surgery after a recent injury, and the team is optimistic that he’ll return to play before the regular season wraps up. Werner has looked like the best player on the team at times this season, so it would be nice to get him back in the lineup. He exited Week 9’s loss to the Baltimore Ravens with an injury and was inactive for Week 10, but remains on the 53-man roster.

What’s odd is that Werner had surgery but wasn’t designated to injured reserve, but that’s been typical for the Saints this year. They haven’t done a good job of estimating when players would return from injured reserve — wide receivers Michael Thomas and Jarvis Landry each missed five or six weeks before Thomas was put on ice for the year and Landry returned, while defensive tackle Malcolm Roach and safety P.J. Williams were both able to return as soon as their four-week term wrapped up. Cornerback Marshon Lattimore has been sidelined five weeks and doesn’t appear close to returning.

It would be a surprise to see Werner back in, say, a week or two so soon after going under the knife but stranger things have happened. The good news is that the Saints have gotten solid play out of their linebacker corps. It’s arguably the strength of their defense with Demario Davis leading the unit and Kaden Elliss filling in well for Werner. But we’ll keep an eye out for movement and any word on when Werner is going to be back out there.

Seahawks RB Rashaad Penny ‘crushed’ after serious ankle injury

Seattle Seahawks running back Rashaad Penny has suffered another serious injury, fracturing his tibia against the Saints in New Orleans.

All reports indicate Seattle Seahawks running back Rashaad Penny fractured his tibia on Sunday during the team’s loss to the New Orleans Saints and he could be out for the remainder of the season.

This isn’t the first serious injury for the Seahawks running back, who has suffered from a finger injury, strained hamstrings and an ACL tear that ended his 2019 campaign.

Coach Pete Carroll said Penny was “crushed” when he spoke to him in the locker room.

“This has been a journey for him, and for us too,” Carroll told reporters during his post-game press conference. “Really, I fell in love with the fact that he emerged and showed us the great player that he is and what he can mean to the game and our team and all of that, and for it to come down to another setback – he’ll be back, he’ll be back – but it’s a setback that just breaks my heart.”

Penny had an impressive start to the season, even earning himself the FedEx Ground Player of Week 4 award for his performance against the Lions.

“He has been having so much fun, he has been so rewarded and so fulfilled,” Carroll continued. “He knows he belongs, he knows he can do it, and he knows he can be an impact in this league, so to lose that chance. It’s similar kind of to when Jamal (Adams) goes out. They put so much into it, and they care so much about it, then to have it taken away because of mishap, it’s unfortunate.”

Carroll and the Seahawks are now awaiting more tests on Monday to see whether or not Penny will need to undergo surgery on his left ankle.

Chiefs RG Trey Smith to play vs. Chargers in Week 2

#Chiefs RG Trey Smith was questionable with an ankle injury ahead of Week 2, but he will play against the #Chargers per report.

The Kansas City Chiefs got some good news during pregame warmups ahead of “Thursday Night Football.”

According to a report from NFL Network’s James Palmer, Chiefs RG Trey Smith will play against the Los Angeles Chargers. Smith suffered an ankle injury during Week 1 against Arizona Cardinals. He was a limited participant in practice on Tuesday and a full participant on Wednesday, but the team listed him as questionable for the game.

Now, we know that he’ll be suiting up and playing for the game.

It’s good that Kansas City has the offensive line at full strength for this game because they’re going against some tough edge rushers in Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack. They’re going to need all the help they can get against those two players.

The Chargers also got some good news with CB J.C. Jackson, who had ankle surgery recently. He was questionable and will be playing his first game of the season according to Palmer.

It’s possible that Jackson could be on a pitch count for this game given the turnaround time here. Expect the Chiefs to target him in coverage and test him early on offense.

Marcus Smart still reportedly recovering from ankle injury in Boston Celtics’ 2022 postseason run

The Celtics veteran is close to 100%, but with a shorter offseason comes less time to heal.

There’s a downside to playing late into the playoffs, even if said downside is mitigated a bit by being deep in an NBA postseason. The lack of time to get one’s body right means the aches and pains accumulated while making such a deep run linger closer to the start of the next season, and in the case of some of the more painful injuries, may even carry over into the next season.

Veteran Boston Celtics point guard Marcus Smart knows this all too well as he continues to recuperate from a Celtics postseason run that had the team within two wins of an NBA title, Boston falling in six games to the Golden State Warriors after the Flower Mound native had put his body on the line for the Celtics several times at a considerable personal cost.

But now, in a recent interview with CLNS Media’s Bobby Manning, Smart shared that while he still feels some of those injuries, he’s closing in on a return to feeling himself again.

Seahawks S Quandre Diggs expected to be medically cleared in June

Seattle Seahawks safety Quandre Diggs is expected to be medically cleared from his ankle injury in June to return to football activities.

Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll took to the podium on Wednesday at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis where he was able to provide a number of player injury updates ahead of the start of free agency.

Carroll believes safety Quandre Diggs will be ready to go by the start of training camp. Diggs suffered a dislocated ankle and a broken fibula in the Seahawks’ Week 18 win over the Cardinals to end his season

“I don’t think there is any doubt,” Carroll told reporters of Diggs’ ability to recover in time. “That’s all he’s thinking about. He’ll be back before then I would think. We really want to get him back.”

Diggs, who is set to become one of the team’s top unrestricted free agents if Seattle isn’t able to re-sign him, promptly popped on Twitter to correct the timeline for his return.

“Folks seen my injury and assumed my injury timeline 9-12 months like ACL’s or Achilles..” Diggs tweeted. “my recovery 4-5 months so that means I got 2-3 months left! Training camp start in August do the math!

ESPN’s Adam Schefter then tweeted a medical update per sources on Thursday to confirm the early summer timeline. Diggs is expected to be medically cleared from his ankle injury in June.
